Development and Validation of the Professional Readiness in Diversity and Equity Scale: Protocol for a Scale Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) patients continue to experience stigma, discrimination, and inadequate knowledge among mental health and medical professionals. These barriers can negatively impact health care outcomes, leading to delayed treatment, mistrust, and unmet medical needs within LGBTQI+ communities. Providing culturally competent care to LGBTQI+ people remains a critical challenge within health and social care. The development and use of reliable and valid assessments examining LGBTQI+ health care professional competency continue to be i

The purpose of this article is to outline a quality improvement initiative at St. Joseph's Health Care London, Canada, involving the Spiritual Care Department and the office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging. With an aim to deepen inclusivity and belonging of all traditions, this article outlines the process of assessing the inclusivity of "multifaith" as a name for sacred spaces on our sites, and whether the word is inclusive of all beliefs-for those oriented to faith, or those not oriented to faith or identifiable faith worldview. Engaging patients, residents, volunteers, and ca

From Awareness to Action: Co-Designing Culturally Safe and Equitable Rehabilitation in Canada - Protocol for the Two-Phase Ireach Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Inequities in access, engagement, and outcomes persist across outpatient rehabilitation services in Canada, disproportionately affecting Indigenous Peoples, newcomers and refugees, gender- and sexually-diverse individuals, and people with lower income. Although rehabilitation professionals report strong awareness of equity, diversity, inclusion, and cultural safety principles, a persistent gap remains between knowledge and day-to-day clinical practice. Existing resources largely focus on education without providing practical, clinic-level tools or aligned patient-facing supports to

Partially randomized preference trials in carceral health research: a methodology to advance equity and inclusion.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated people experience disproportionately poor health outcomes yet often remain excluded from clinical research due to ethical concerns of limited autonomy and coercion. As a result, traditional randomized controlled trials face significant challenges in carceral settings, driven by mistrust of the medical system, randomization limiting choice, and logistical barriers with blinding and masking. These challenges necessitate alternative methodologies that balance scientific rigor while empowering participant choice. MAIN TEXT: This commentary proposes partially randomized pr

Equity of African American Men in Headache in the United States: A Perspective From African American Headache Medicine Specialists (Part 1).

Migraine and severe headache affect approximately 1 in 6 U.S. adults and migraine is one of the most disabling disorders worldwide. Approximately 903,000 to 1.5 million African American (AA) men are affected by migraine in the United States. Racial disparities in headache medicine exist. In addition, there are limited headache studies that attest to the inclusion of or have robust data on AA men in headache medicine in the United States. Racial concordance between provider and patient may ameliorate some aspects of care disparities. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that diversity and inclusi

Operationalizing equity-mindedness for graduate English as a second language students in online nursing programs.

BACKGROUND: The success of graduate nursing students who speak English as a second language (ESL) is critical to addressing the shortage of diverse advanced practice providers, yet evidence focuses exclusively on prelicensure students, predominantly in face-to-face contexts. PURPOSE: This study assessed graduate ESL nursing students' perceptions of academic barriers in an online program and identified strategies to mitigate threats to equity. METHODS: Forty-one (n = 41) student responses to a 23-item survey were analyzed using a convergent mixed methods approach. The sample included students

Equity-Mobilizing Partnerships in Community (EMPaCT): Co-Designing Patient Engagement to Promote Health Equity.

Equity-Mobilizing Partnerships in Community (EMPaCT) is a novel approach to patient engagement that centres diverse lived experiences and promotes equity-oriented and inclusive partnerships. As an independent community table, EMPaCT is made up primarily of patients/diverse members of community. Researchers and other decision makers come to this table with their projects to learn how to make their project more inclusive and equitable. In this paper, we detail how we used participatory co-design to define, build and grow EMPaCT as an innovative and scalable patient partnership model that promote

Commitment and confidence, not expertise, are key to LGBTQ+ inclusivity in nursing education: Findings from a mixed-methods study.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of pre-licensure nursing faculty in the United States (U.S.) with LGBTQ+ inclusivity in their teaching practice. BACKGROUND: Nursing faculty must prepare students to provide equitable care for LGBTQ+ patients and populations. There is a gap in the evidence related to nursing faculty experiences with LGBTQ+ inclusivity. METHODS: This explanatory mixed-methods study consisted of a cross-sectional survey (phase I) and semi-structured interviews (phase II). Findings from phase I were used to design the interview guide and inform pu

Equities and Inequities Inherent in Wastewater Surveillance Systems for Public Health: New York State, 2020-2024.

Objectives. To evaluate equity in wastewater-based infectious disease surveillance, including equity of inclusion, outbreak detection, and disease forecasting. Methods. We assessed New York State's wastewater surveillance network using census tract-level data to compare social vulnerability and environmental burden across included, sewered but excluded, and unsewered communities during the scale-up of the network (2020-2024) and under changing coverage scenarios. We modeled outbreak detection equity by estimating outbreak sizes required for 95% confidence in the detection of hypothetical patho

Gender Bias: Another Rising Curve to Flatten?

The COVID-19 pandemic and the upheaval it is causing may be leading to novel manifestations of the well-established mechanisms by which women have been marginalized in professional roles, robbing the field of the increased collective intelligence that exists when diverse perspectives are embraced. Unconscious bias, gendered expectations, and overt hostility minimize the contributions of women in academic medicine to the detriment of all. The current environment of heightened stress and new socially distant forms of communication may be exacerbating these well-recognized obstacles to women cont

Expanding stop the bleed to achieve health equity: Inclusion of deaf and hard-of-hearing populations in injury prevention and education.

BACKGROUND: Stop the Bleed (STB) is a program that teaches hemorrhage control techniques to the public. While STB has been taught to 4 million people, it is only widely available in English and Spanish languages. Therefore, vulnerable populations with other language preferences may miss this life-saving training. The purpose of our study is to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of adapting STB for the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) community. METHODS: In conjunction with the staff of the Georgia Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a needs assessment was conducted to identify nec

Racial and ethnic representation in concussion research: a call for methodological and analytical reform.

BACKGROUND: Concussion is a critical public health issue, with approximately one in five adolescents and a substantial number of college athletes reporting a lifetime history of concussion. The impact of concussion on cognitive health may extend across the lifespan, increasing the risk of potential long-term cognitive impairments, such as dementia. Although concussion research continues to grow and incorporate athlete demographic factors, it overwhelmingly includes singular comparisons between Black or African American versus White individuals when considering race as a determinant of health.
