This article explores the social processes through which ideas about the family become translated into regulation and practice in assisted conception. Drawing on social problems literature, it is suggested that claims are made (by regulators, practitioners and others) about the desirability of certain family types and that forms of regulation occur when families transgress, in particularly obvious ways, the boundaries of those definitions. The apparently disparate examples of lesbian access to donor insemination and donor anonymity are brought together to illustrate the argument. It is also su

Online sperm donation (OSD) is reshaping donor conception by enabling direct connections between donors and recipients outside clinical settings. This systematised narrative review triangulates existing research on sperm donors and recipients who connect through OSD platforms, comparing their perceptions and experiences across different stages of the donation process. By exploring the complex interplay between donors' and recipients' motivations, it fosters dialogue between research areas often examined in isolation. Studies show that donors and recipients, who often explore alternatives along

The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how recipients viewed payment of sperm donors. The study was conducted in Belgium, where, as in many countries, sperm donors receive recompense for their time and expenses. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with 34 heterosexual and lesbian couples who, at the time of data collection, had at least one donor-conceived child aged 7-10 years or who were undergoing donor conception treatment. Although participants commonly described the issue of financial compensation as something that did not really concern them, all supported t

The call for greater openness about gamete donation highlights the need to assess the long-term implications of telling donor-conceived children about their origins. This longitudinal study examined the consequences of secrecy versus openness about donor insemination (DI) for family relationships and child adjustment at adolescence. Thirty heterosexual families with an adolescent (aged 10-14 years) conceived by anonymous DI were assessed using standardized measures of parent-child and marital relationships, and parents' and adolescents' psychological wellbeing. Ten (33%) adolescents had been t

STUDY QUESTION: What are the experiences and outcomes of donor conceived adults who are actively searching for, open to contact with, or not searching for donor connections?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Most participants were actively searching or open to contact, and 67% had found or been found by a connection; finding or not finding experiences were complex.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: There is variation among donor conceived individuals in their interest in donor connections. Individual reasons for searching for connections, and which donor connections are searched for, also vary. Most research studies hav

Rarely have donor conceived offspring been studied. Recently, it has become more common for parents to disclose the nature of conception to their offspring. This new development raises questions about the donor's place in the offspring's life and identity. Using surveys collected by the Donor Sibling Registry, the largest U.S. web-based registry, during a 15 week period from October 2009 to January 2010, we found that donor offspring view the donor as a whole person, rather than as simple genetic material (he can know you; he has looks; he can teach you about yourself); they also believe that

The detection of the recently discovered Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV) in human immunodeficiency virus-uninfected donor semen and in blood from a normal blood donor has led us to review this new area of health concern, with emphasis on a number of studies conducted into the presence of the virus in semen and the possibility of transmission during assisted conception procedures.

This paper reports on and discusses the findings of an online survey initiated by the Donor Sibling Registry of 108 parents of children conceived following oocyte donation. Respondents generally supported early disclosure of donor conception to the child, although some bias in favour of disclosure cannot be excluded, given the recruitment source. Even so, extensive uncertainty regarding the optimum time for disclosure was evident. Around half of the parents who had either expressly chosen (50.0%), or had been given no choice of, an anonymous donor (54.1%) subsequently wished they had used an o

AIMS: To explore couples' experiences in the preconception phase of infertility treatment with donor gametes and how this may influence the disclosure process to the offspring and/or others.
METHODS: In-depth interviews with 10 recipient couples were analyzed using a grounded theory approach.
RESULTS: In the context of their infertility and a culture in which definitions of gender and family are fundamentally biologically based, participants reconsidered the significance and meaning of genetics, and social connectedness in family-building and parenthood. When couples emphasized the similarit

BACKGROUND: Studies of parental decision making regarding information sharing with offspring conceived as a result of donor insemination are almost all based on a 'one point in time' design. This study reports on parental decision making at two points in time, Time 1 and Time 2, 14 years apart.
METHODS: Forty-four of 57 families (77%) who had agreed to take part in a follow-up study were interviewed. An in-depth semi-structured interview format was used. In addition, two questionnaires seeking mainly quantitative data were administered.
RESULTS: Fifteen families (35%) had told their offsprin

The increasing use of direct-to-consumer genetic testing revealed not only more, but also different types of insemination fraud worldwide, making research into the topic urgently needed. This study explores how donor-conceived people and parents experience insemination fraud and their need for and perception of psychosocial support. We conducted a qualitative interview study with 19 participants affected by insemination fraud from the Netherlands and Belgium. Insemination fraud occurs when the doctor uses a different sperm sample for insemination than the (prospective) parents consented to. Th

The Ethics Committee supports disclosure from parents to offspring about the use of donor gametes in their conception. The merits of further disclosure are discussed, and suggestions are made for policies for programs and sperm banks.

A variety of genetic disorders are treatable by allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. Predictive genetic testing and HLA typing of cultured fetal cells enable one to know early in a pregnancy that a fetus is genetically normal and is HLA-identical to a sibling affected with a genetic disease. Umbilical cord blood can be collected at the delivery of an HLA-matched normal sibling and used for stem/progenitor cell transplantation for the affected child. Our experience with families of children with Fanconi anemia has shown that the deliberate conception of a fetus for the possibility of providi

This study examined families where children lack a genetic and/or gestational link with their parents. A total of 101 families (36 donor insemination families, 32 egg donation families and 33 surrogacy families) were interviewed when the child was aged 7 years. Despite a shift in professional attitudes towards openness, about half of the children conceived by egg donation and nearly three-quarters of those conceived by donor insemination remained unaware that the person they know as their mother or father is not, in fact, their genetic parent. By contrast, almost all the surrogacy parents had

Our study endeavors to show, in the form of an empirical study, that the inadequate number of donations of human body parts in France can be explained by a fear of loss, in both an ontological and anthropological sense: to give is to renounce, to lose, to deprive oneself. This line of argument seeks, on one hand, to highlight how the common understanding of donation implicitly fuels this behaviour, and, on the other hand, to propose a relationship of oneself to oneself followed by oneself to others through various representations of the possession of one's body. Thus, a social practice with a

STUDY QUESTION: Do donor-conceived adolescents in lesbian- and heterosexual-couple families intend to request information about their identity-release oocyte or sperm donor?
SUMMARY ANSWER: While more than half of adolescents intended to request donor information, being uncertain about making such requests was quite common, particularly among adolescents reporting better family functioning and those conceived with donor sperm in heterosexual-couple families.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Increasing numbers of children conceived with identity-release gamete donation are approaching the age when they

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the new phenomenon of parents of donor offspring searching for and contacting their child's 'donor siblings' (i.e. donor offspring conceived by the same donor) and donor.
METHODS: Online questionnaires were completed by 791 parents (39% lone-mother, 35% lesbian-couple, 21% heterosexual-couple, 5% non-specified) recruited via the Donor Sibling Registry; a US-based international registry that facilitates contact between donor conception families who share the same donor. Data were collected on parents' reasons for searching for their child's donor siblings an

The outcome of 32 pregnancies in renal allograft recipients is reported. The mean age at the time of conception was 27.3 years (range, 20 to 37) with an average interval of 47 months from the time of transplantation to conception (range, 2 to 163). Twenty-nine patients received the graft from a living related donor, one from a living no related donor an 2 from cadaver donors. All patients continued their immunosuppressive regimen during pregnancy and only 6 patients were taking cyclosporine A. Hypertension during pregnancy was observed in 10 patients (31%), superimposed preeclampsia in 4 (14%)
