Psychosocial characteristics and follow-up of drinking and non-drinking drivers in motor vehicle crashes.

Eight hundred fifty-four consecutive motor vehicle crash (MVC) victims admitted from August 1, 1986, through August 31, 1989, were prospectively assessed including measurement of blood alcohol concentration (BAC). One hundred six in-hospital interviews were conducted on competent consenting drivers > or = 18 years old; 22.9% (n = 22) of those who were BAC tested (n = 96) were positive for alcohol on admission. The blood alcohol concentration positive [BAC(+)] and the BAC negative (-) drivers differed significantly on the following variables; driver education [BAC(-) > BAC(+): p < 0.01], licens

Assessing self-determined motivation for drinking alcohol via the Comprehensive Relative Autonomy Index for Drinking.

INTRODUCTION: Self-Determination Theory (SDT) examines human motivation in multiple domains; however, the only existing measure assessing SDT-informed behavioral regulations for drinking focuses on responsible drinker behaviors, rather than drinking per se, which is important given the alignment between SDT and harm reduction approaches to alcohol use. The aim of this study was to test the structural validity of the SDT-informed Comprehensive Relative Autonomy Index for Drinking (CRAI-Drinking) among college students. METHODS: Participants included two convenience samples with a total of 630

Voluntary wheel-running reduces harmful drinking in a genetic risk model for drinking to intoxication.

Physical activity (PA) may provide an effective and equitable treatment option for addressing the harm associated with Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs). Wheel-running (WR) - a well characterized rodent model of PA - reduces intake and craving for many drugs of abuse; however, its effects on models of harmful ethanol intake are mixed. This may in part be due to critical differences in drinking paradigm, genetics background, chronicity of ethanol, and the modality and duration of PA being tested. To compliment and extend prior work, we evaluated whether key stages of PA development would differentia

Exclusively drinking sucrose or saline early in life alters adult drinking behavior by laboratory rats.

Proper fluid balance is critical for life. Learning plays an important role in shaping the appetitive behaviors required for drinking. Children often forego drinking plain water and instead consume beverages such as milk or juice. What effect this may have on adult thirst responses remains an open question. To model aspects of the human condition, we bred Sprague-Dawley rats and prevented the pups from obtaining fluid other than from nursing. Pups were weaned onto either tap water, 5% sucrose, or 0.45% saline, and given access to only that fluid for at least 7 weeks. We then measured intake of

Social anxiety symptoms and drinking behaviors among college students: the mediating effects of drinking motives.

The impact of social anxiety on negative alcohol-related behaviors among college students has been studied extensively. Drinking motives are considered the most proximal indicator of college student drinking behavior. The current study examined the mediating role of drinking motives in the relationship that social anxiety symptoms have with problematic (alcohol consumption, harmful drinking, and negative consequences) and safe (protective behavioral strategies) drinking behaviors. Participants were 532 undergraduates who completed measures of social anxiety, drinking motives, alcohol use, harm

Effects of heavy drinking, binge drinking, and family history of alcoholism on regional brain metabolites.

BACKGROUND: The main goals are to investigate the effects of chronic active heavy drinking on N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and other metabolites throughout the brain and to determine whether they are affected by family history (FH) of alcoholism and long-term drinking pattern. METHODS: Forty-six chronic heavy drinkers (HD) and 52 light drinkers (LD) were recruited from the community and compared on measures of regional brain structure using magnetic resonance imaging and measures of common brain metabolites in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) of the major lobes, subcortical nuclei, brainstem

Risk Perception, Drinking Motives, and Willingness to Drink in Social Contexts Among Emerging Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Emerging adults (18-25 years) report high instances of heavy episodic drinking and related problems; however, less is known about the relation of risk perception and alcohol-related outcomes, especially as it relates to social drinking in trans and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. METHOD: To capture a realistic portrayal of real-time social drinking decision-making, we used the Collegiate-Simulated Intoxication Digital Elicitation (C-SIDE) to collect behavioral willingness ratings for alcohol in a variety of simulated situations from 273 18-25 year olds in the United States (187 c

The Moderation Effect of Basic Need Satisfaction in the Relationship Between Drinking Motives and Drinking Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Self-determination theory indicates that three basic psychological needs-autonomy, competence, and relatedness motivate human behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This research examined how basic need satisfaction moderated the relationship between drinking motives and drinking outcomes. METHOD: We analyzed the data from a baseline assessment of a larger project evaluating brief alcohol interventions among heavy-drinking college students. Participants were 605 undergraduate students from two large public universities. RESULTS: The results show that only relatedness needs moderated the relation

Drinking patterns, drinking-at-risk, and the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic in eight European countries.

RESEARCH AIMS: To describe alcohol consumption and preferences among both drinkers, and high-risk drinkers; to compare consumption before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic across eight European countries. METHOD: Secondary analysis of a dataset from 24 946 respondents 18-90 years old from eight European countries who reported having drunk any alcoholic beverages during the week prior to the online interview (October-November 2022). RESULTS: Weekly alcohol consumption across countries was between 123.6 and 197.2 grams of pure alcohol per person, with a male/female ratio between 1.1

Risk assessment of energy drinks with focus on cardiovascular parameters and energy drink consumption in Europe.

To assess the possible cardiovascular risks associated with energy drink (ED) consumption in Europe, a comprehensive literature research was performed in regard to (i) possible ED-induced dose-dependent cardiovascular outcomes, (ii) ED consumption patterns in Europe and (iii) the risks of EDs in combination with alcohol. The identified intervention studies primarily investigated acute ED effects in young healthy adults. Moderate consumption of EDs corresponding to an acute caffeine intake of up to 200 mg did not result in clinically relevant cardiovascular changes in young healthy adults. Howe

Age and racial/ethnic differences in drinking and drinking-related problems in a community sample of lesbians.

OBJECTIVE: Although research on alcohol use among women has increased dramatically during the past several decades, relatively few studies have focused on lesbians, and almost none have included sufficient numbers of older lesbians or lesbians of color to permit comparative analyses. Using data from the Chicago Health and Life Experiences of Women Study (CHLEW), we examined drinking patterns and problems in a large and diverse sample of lesbians. METHOD: Structured interviews were conducted with 447 community-residing adult women (ages 18-83) who self-identified as lesbians (48% non-Hispanic

Who pays for the drinking? Characteristics of the extent and distribution of social harms from others' drinking.

AIMS: To explore the extent and distribution of experienced negative consequences from other people's drinking and to explore what characterizes the victims of these harms. DESIGN, PARTICIPANTS AND MEASUREMENTS: Cross-sectional survey in a national sample of adults. Net sample comprised 2170 respondents. Negative consequences from others' drinking during the past 12 months were assessed by seven items. RESULTS: The more severe types of consequences (being physically hurt or property damage) were reported less often (by 3.1% and 4.8%, respectively) than the least severe type of consequence (b

Sources of alcohol and associations with drinking frequency and binge drinking among a large sample of adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Underage drinking remains a major public health concern worldwide, contributing to a wide range of health and social harms. While adolescent alcohol use has been widely studied, there is limited evidence on how adolescents obtain alcohol and how these sources relate to drinking behaviours. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used data from 8,507 Grades 9-12 students participating in the 2022-2023 COMPASS study across 66 schools in Canada. Analyses were restricted to students who reported alcohol use in the past 12 months. Proportional odds mixed models assessed associations bet

PTSD-related drinking to cope and changes in drinking risk levels in a nationally representative sample.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with high-risk drinking that may be sustained through drinking to cope with PTSD symptoms. This study sought to determine whether PTSD-related drinking to cope was associated with changes in World Health Organization risk drinking levels (WHO RDL) over 3 years among those with PTSD symptoms, using data from the National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions. The sample included individuals who reported past-year alcohol use and PTSD symptoms at Wave 1 (baseline). Mean drinks per drinking day were used to define WHO RDL (low, m

A New Perspective on "Drinking" Self: A Network Approach to Characterizing Drinking-Related Changes in Personality.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that self-knowledge, particularly perceptions of oneself as a "drinker," may influence the development and progression of alcohol use and related problems, such as binge drinking. While existing studies have provided empirical evidence for the importance of assessing drinking self-perception within the five-factor model of personality framework, further examination with novel analytic methods, such as network analyses, could improve understanding of the drinker self-concept. Methods: Five factor traits of openness to experience, conscientiousness, extrave

Survival of Burkholderia pseudomallei and Pathogenic Leptospira in Cola, Beer, Energy Drinks, and Sports Drinks.

Burkholderia pseudomallei and pathogenic Leptospira in contaminated drinking water can cause melioidosis and leptospirosis, respectively. Here, we evaluated their survival in beverages. We mixed six isolates (three isolates per organism) in four beverages (Coca-Cola®, Red Bull®, Singha® beer, and Gatorade®) and distilled water as the control at two final concentrations (1 × 107 colony-forming units [CFU]/mL and 1 × 103 CFU/mL). The solution was kept at two temperatures (37°C and 4°C). At 4°C and at the high concentration, pathogenic Leptospira survived in Coca-Cola® up to 3 minutes and in Sing

The separate and interactive effects of drinking motives and social anxiety symptoms in predicting drinking outcomes.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to test the separate and interactive effects of drinking motives and social anxiety symptoms in predicting drinking-related consumption and problems. METHODS: Participants (N=730; 59.7% female) were undergraduate college students who completed measures of social anxiety symptoms, drinking motives, alcohol consumption, and drinking problems. RESULTS: Greater social anxiety symptoms were significantly associated with less alcohol consumption, and there was some evidence that greater social anxiety symptoms were also associated with greater alcohol-relevant problems. Focus on: College drinking and related problems: magnitude and prevention of college drinking and related problems.

In 2002, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) issued a report entitled A Call to Action: Changing the Culture of Drinking at U.S. Colleges. Data on the magnitude of college drinking problems in 1998 to 1999 were reported. From 1999 to 2005, the proportion of college students aged 18-24 who drank five or more drinks on a single occasion in the past month increased from 41.7 percent to 45.2 percent. The proportion who drove under the influence of alcohol increased from 26.1 percent to 29.2 percent. Higher percentages of 21- to 24-year-olds engaged in those behaviors tha

Social anxiety and drinking game participation among university students: the moderating role of drinking to cope.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the relationship of social anxiety with drinking game participation. Drinking games represent a popular form of drinking in university settings. Due to their structure, games may appeal to socially anxious drinkers, particularly among those seeking to fit in or cope with the social setting. OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship of social anxiety with frequency of drinking game participation among a university undergraduate sample and to investigate if drinking motives moderate this association. METHOD: A total of 227 undergraduate students aged 18-24 y

Sexual assault, drinking norms, and drinking behavior among a national sample of lesbian and bisexual women.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and adolescent/adult sexual assault (ASA) are strongly associated with women's alcohol use and the rates of both alcohol use and sexual assault history are higher among lesbian and bisexual women than heterosexual women. Although descriptive drinking norms are one of the highest predictors of alcohol use in emerging adults, this is the first study to examine the relationship between sexual assault history, drinking norms, and alcohol use in lesbian and bisexual women. We found that CSA severity was associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing more severe alc
