Effects of deviant child behavior on parental alcohol consumption. Stress-induced drinking in parents of ADHD children.

Distress and ad lib alcohol consumption after interactions with child confederates were investigated in parents of children with externalizing disorders--attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder (CD), or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Sixty subjects interacted with boys trained to act like either normal children or children with ADHD/CD/ODD. Interactions with deviant confederates resulted in feelings of inadequacy and produced negative affect but had no effect on alcohol consumption. Post hoc analyses showed that parents with a family history of alcohol problems

Early post-hatch feeding and drinking behavior and body weight development in white and brown layer chickens.

Effects of early post-hatch feed and water deprivation on eating and drinking behavior and body weight development have been mostly investigated in broiler chickens. However, little is known about these aspects in layer chickens. This study investigated the eating and drinking behavior of white (Dekalb White) and brown (Lohman Brown Classic) layer chickens early post-hatch, as well as the feed and water intake and body weight development. A total of 352 in-ovo sexed female eggs on day 18 of incubation were allocated to 16 pens (8 pens per strain, 22 eggs per pen) and hatched in the pen. The fi

Goal-directed behavior and hippocampal activity predict real-life impact of drinking intentions in alcohol use disorder.

A shift away from goal-directed, model-based behavior is commonly viewed to characterize alcohol use disorder (AUD). Previous research, however, has failed to demonstrate differences between individuals with and without AUD regarding goal-directed control, operationalized as model-based behavior. Instead, findings suggest associations between model-based behavior and alcohol consumption patterns, but mechanistic insights into the link between model-based behavioral and neural signatures and longitudinal, real-life control over alcohol intake remain elusive. Here, we investigated whether experi

Drinking behavior patterns may be associated with persistent depressive symptoms after alcohol abstinence in alcohol use disorder.

AIM: This study examined the association between drinking behavior patterns and depressive symptoms after alcohol abstinence in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). METHOD: We recruited 102 AUD inpatients with baseline depressive symptoms, indicated by scores ≥6 on the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology Self-Report Japanese Version (QIDS-SR-J) pre-detoxification. Post-4-week abstinence, remission was defined as QIDS-SR-J scores <6. Patients were classified into remitted (n = 51) and persistent (n = 51) groups. Comparative analyses were conducted using patient profiles and the D

RELATIONSHIP between prandial drinking behavior and supersensitivity of salivary glands after superior salivatory nucleus lesions in RATS.

Prandial drinking, an increase in the number of drinking responses and secondary or non-homeostatic polydipsia in the presence of dry food, is typically associated with a deficit in salivary secretion. This study investigates the degree of salivary gland supersensitivity to pilocarpine administration after lesions to the superior salivatory nucleus (SSN), the site of origin of the parasympathetic preganglionic neurons that innervate the submandibular-sublingual (S-S) salivary glands. The main aim was to determine if there is a relationship between the degree of glandular supersensitivity, as a

Sexual Harassment, Psychological Distress, and Problematic Drinking Behavior Among College Students: An Examination of Reciprocal Causal Relations.

Sexual harassment on college campuses is a frequent occurrence and serious public health concern. Victims of sexual harassment are at risk for many possible negative health consequences. In addition, certain psychological distress symptoms and/or alcohol use may put individuals at increased risk of being victims of sexual harassment. Data from more than 2,000 college students in the Midwestern United States were used to examine reciprocal causal effects of the relations between (a) experiencing sexual harassment and alcohol use and (b) experiencing sexual harassment and psychological distress

Patterns of use of other drugs among those with alcohol dependence: Associations with drinking behavior and psychopathology.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol dependence (AD) presents with substantial clinical heterogeneity, including concurrent use of non-alcohol drugs. Here, we examine specific patterns of concurrent non-alcohol substance use during the previous year among a nationally representative sample of adults with DSM-IV AD, and estimate their population prevalence in the U.S. We then evaluate alcohol use behavior and comorbid psychopathology among respondents with AD according to their patterns of concurrent non-alcohol substance use. METHODS: These analyses utilized data from Waves 1 and 2 of the National Epidemiol

Longitudinal associations between binge drinking and changes in behavioral and neural threat reactivity in youth.

Problematic alcohol use frequently emerges during adolescence and young adulthood, yet few objective markers reliably capture risk or track early changes in drinking behavior. Reactivity to uncertain threat (U-threat) has been identified as a potential neurobiological risk factor for alcohol misuse; however, no study has examined within-subjects changes in reactivity to U-threat as a function of drinking frequency. Thus, it remains unclear whether reactivity to U-threat reflects a stable vulnerability marker or a dynamic process that tracks within-person changes in alcohol use. To address this

Bystanding to prevent drink-driving: Young adults' descriptions of factors that promote and restrict their behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Drink driving remains a leading contributor to motor-vehicle fatalities. For young adults, a sizeable proportion of their drinking is with friends, who may have opportunity to plan ahead or potentially intervene and speak up against drink-driving. We sought to explore young adults' preventive behaviors toward friends and the potential relevance for the classic Latané and Darley social psychology theory of bystander intervention. METHOD: Across two studies we interviewed 63, 18-25-year-old Australians, using semi-structured interview schedules (approximately 30-45 min). Study 1 f

Drinking motives and alcohol sensitivity mediate multidimensional genetic influences on alcohol use behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Genetic influences account for a substantial proportion of individual differences in alcohol use behaviors (AUBs). However, multiple distinct sets of genes are linked to different AUBs via uncertain causal links. Here, we explore whether intermediate neurobiological traits mediate the relationship between polygenic scores (PGSs) and multiple AUBs, with the aim to better understand processes captured by different genetic profiles. METHODS: We derived four alcohol-related PGSs in participants from Spit for Science, a longitudinal study of college students in the United States (n = 4

Latent motivational profiles of behavioral regulations for drinking distinguish groups by alcohol consumption and consequences.

BACKGROUND: Self-determination theory characterizes drinking motives according to level of autonomy and locus of control and aligns with harm reduction approaches to alcohol use. This study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify motivational profiles of self-determined behavioral regulations for drinking and to test their associations with sociodemographic variables and alcohol consumption and outcomes. METHODS: Adults aged 18-57 (N = 630, Mage = 21.5, 55% female, 88% undergraduates) reported typical alcohol consumption (Daily Drinking Questionnaire), consequences (Brief Young Adult A

Binegativity, Childhood Maltreatment, Impulsivity, and Risky Behaviors Among Heavy Drinking Bisexual Women.

Bisexual women report more alcohol use and sexual risk-taking than lesbian or heterosexual women. Few studies have examined the underlying mechanisms associating stress sources (binegativity, childhood trauma) with drinking and sexual risk-taking behaviors among bisexual women. Impulsivity may be one such mechanism. This study tested if impulsivity served as a mechanism between childhood trauma, binegativity, alcohol use, and sexual risk-taking. Participants (N = 225) were cisgender, heavy drinking, bisexual women ages 18-30 who completed an online survey. Results showed a significant indirect

Impacts of childhood adversity forms and drinker self-schema on undergraduate drinking behaviors and depression.

PURPOSE: Drinking behaviors and depression are common and highly correlated behaviors in undergraduates. Child adversity and drinker self-schemas have been recognized as significant risk factors of drinking behaviors and depression. However, how the various child adversity forms differentially influence the formation of drinker self-schema and behaviors is underexplored. We aimed to determine whether drinker self-schema serves as a mechanism underlying the influence of child adversity forms on drinking frequency, drinking problems, and depressive symptoms. METHODS: A cross-sectional, correlat

Sexual risk-taking behaviors, gambling, and heavy drinking among U.S. College athletes.

The purpose of this study was to empirically examine the prevalence patterns of sexual risk-taking behaviors (i.e., unprotected sex and having multiple sex partners) in relation to levels of gambling problems and heavy episodic drinking (HED) status among U.S. college athletes. Data from a representative national sample of 20,739 U.S. college athletes were derived from the first National Collegiate Athletic Association national survey of problem gambling and health-risk behaviors. Among college athletes who were sexually active during the past year, males reported significantly higher prevalen

Effects of chlordiazepoxide on food anticipation, drinking and other behaviors in food-deprived and satiated rats.

Two groups of rats, Deprived and Satiated, were presented with food according to a fixed time 60-sec schedule. They were then injected with saline, 5, 10, and 15 mg/kg of chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride according to a Latin square design. During saline administration time spent visiting the food tray, time spent drinking, number of tray entries and the amount of water ingested were always greater in the Deprived than in the Satiated group; whereas the opposite was true for grooming. As chlordiazepoxide dose increased time spent visiting the food tray increased in both groups, but the effect was

Understanding predictors of binge-drinking behaviors among college students: a random forests analysis.

Objective: This study used a machine learning approach to examine how marijuana use, social connectedness, psychological distress, and demographic characteristics predicted binge drinking (BD) among 31,120 college students from the 2021-2022 Healthy Minds Study. Methods: A random forests analysis was used to assess the influence of predictors of binge drinking, and partial dependence plots and mixed-effects logistic regression were used to determine the direction of each predictor. Results: Findings indicated that marijuana use, older age, lower religiosity, depression, and diminished sense of

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia among heavy-drinking veterans: a randomized pilot trial.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Two in five Veterans report symptoms of insomnia, with higher rates among those who drink heavily. Although Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) has demonstrated efficacy among those with Alcohol Use Disorder, abstinence is often considered a prerequisite for treatment, leaving its impact unclear among those who are actively drinking. This trial tested the efficacy of CBT-I among heavy-drinking Veterans with insomnia (#NCT03804788). METHODS: Veterans from across the United States were randomly assigned to CBT-I or sleep hygiene control. Participants completed re

Early life stress modulates behavioral sensitivity to alcohol and promotes escalation of alcohol drinking.

Adverse childhood experiences significantly increase the risk of developing alcohol use disorder (AUD) in adulthood. We used a model of combined limited bedding/nesting and maternal separation (LBN+MS) in C57BL/6J background mice to investigate how early life stress (ELS) modulates behavioral sensitivity to alcohol, long-term alcohol drinking patterns, and the effects of alcohol on social behaviors. Our findings reveal that ELS increased sensitivity to the stimulatory locomotor effects of alcohol (1.75 g/kg) selectively in females and reduced sensitivity to the sedative effects of alcohol (4.0

Intensity Matters: Heterogeneous impact of cigarette tax reform on drinking behaviors by smoking intensity.

This paper investigates the relationship between smoking and drinking behaviors across different smoking intensity groups, using a unique policy shock that increased cigarette taxes in South Korea. Using the Korean Health Panel, we employ a difference-in-differences approach to estimate the causal effect of the cigarette price increase on alcohol consumption among heavy, average, and light smokers. We find that an increase in cigarette prices reduces drinking behavior only among heavy smokers, while cigarette consumption is reduced across all smokers. Subgroup analysis shows that the reduction
