BACKGROUND: An association between alcohol consumption and injury is clearly established from volume of drinking, heavy episodic drinking (HED), and consumption before injury. Little is known, however, about how their interaction raises risk of injury and what combination of factors carries the highest risk. This study explores which of 11 specified groups of drinkers (a) are at high risk and (b) contribute most to alcohol-attributable injuries.
METHODS: In all, 8,736 patients, of whom 5,077 were injured, admitted to the surgical ward of the emergency department of Lausanne University Hospita

BACKGROUND: Excessive alcohol consumption is most widespread among young adults. Practice guidelines recommend screening and physician advice, which could help address this common cause of injury and premature death.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the proportion of persons ages 18-39 who, in the past year, saw a physician and were asked about their drinking and advised what drinking levels pose health risk, and whether this differed by age or whether respondents exceeded low-risk drinking guidelines [daily (>4 drinks for men/>3 for women) or weekly (>14 for men/>7 for women)].
DESIGN: Survey of young

In light of the emphasis on enforcement-based approaches towards sex work, and the well-known negative impacts of these approaches on women's health, safety and well-being, we conducted a study to investigate the prevalence and correlates of recent incarceration among a cohort of women sex workers in Vancouver, Canada. Data were obtained from an open prospective community cohort of female and transgender women sex workers, known as An Evaluation of Sex Workers' Health Access (AESHA). Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses, using generalized estimating equations (GEE), were us

Views and policies about eating and drinking in labour vary widely across the world. There is an increasing trend towards allowing food and fluids during labour, although little scientific data exist on its influence on the course of labour. Evidence-based recommendations in the form of a guideline on eating and drinking in labour is still lacking. Thus, the purpose of the present paper was to review the current literature to establish whether there is evidence for restricting or allowing food and fluids during normal labour.

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to estimate the prevalence of past solvent abuse among junior high school students in Saitama prefecture and to investigate smoking and drinking as "gateway drugs" for solvent abuse.
METHODS: The survey was conducted from Dec 2002 to Jan 2003, in 3 junior high schools in Saitama, using anonymous self-reporting to preserve privacy. A total of 2,049 (93.2%) students responded to our questionnaire. Two groups were categorized and analyzed according to history of solvent abuse in the past. To investigate "gateway effects" of smoking and drinking, we anal

BACKGROUND: Water is the most abundant resource on earth, however water scarcity affects more than 40% of people worldwide. Access to safe drinking water is a basic human right and is a United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6. Globally, waterborne diseases such as cholera are responsible for over two million deaths annually. Cholera is a major cause of ill-health in Africa and Uganda. This study aimed to determine the physicochemical characteristics of the surface and spring water in cholera endemic communities of Uganda in order to promote access to safe drinking water.

Five experiments investigated in rats the effects of increasing or decreasing plasma corticosterone levels on schedule-induced polydipsia and dopamine efflux in the nucleus accumbens. The results indicate that the acquisition of schedule-induced polydipsia could be decreased by adrenalectomy, blockade of corticosterone synthesis, or administration of corticosterone. Performance of established schedule-induced polydipsia was also decreased by adrenalectomy. The effects of corticosterone administration on established schedule-induced polydipsia depended on the level of performance. High levels o

Concerned partners (CPs) play a crucial role in encouraging their loved ones to moderate or seek help for their drinking but are not always equipped with the strategies to approach these conversations effectively. This research comprises three phases: First, we will conduct a dyadic ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study to establish common communication patterns associated with drinking and non-drinking behaviors. Findings from this study will be used to develop a web-based intervention (WBI) prototype, which will be used in a qualitative study with CPs assessing the WBI's feasibility an

In last few years it has been a significant increase in the consumption of alcohol combined with energy drink. The aim of this work was to study the effect of this mixture in motor and affective behaviors during an alcohol hangover episode. Male Swiss mice received one of the following treatments: saline + sucrose; saline + energy drink; ethanol + sucrose; ethanol + energy drink. Ethanol dose was 3.8 g/kg BW (i.p.) and energy drink dose was 18 ml/kg BW (gavage) at ZT1 (8 am) (ZT: Zeitgeber time; ZT0: 7 am; lights on). The behavioral tests used were tight rope test to determine motor coordinati

The decisional balance worksheet (DBW), an open-ended measure of motivation to change, may be used to record the perceived advantages and disadvantages of substance use as well as alternative behaviors. Recent findings have indicated that the open-ended DBW can be quantified to validly reflect college students' level of motivation to reduce their drinking (Collins, Carey, & Otto, 2009). The goal of the current study was to enhance our understanding of college students' perceived advantages and disadvantages of drinking by qualitatively examining the content of their decisional balance. Drinking as a coping method in response to pain is a complex behaviour, involving multiple neural, motivational, and psychological factors. Among these factors, pain sensitivity and pain-related drinking motive can significantly promote alcohol use. In contrast, proactive avoidance - a beneficial strategy of initiating overt actions to avoid negative outcomes - reduces harmful consumption. Yet, these factors have not been assessed as potential predictors of future drinking behaviour. Here, in a longitudinal study we collected fMRI data in 50 drinkers who, at baseline, performed a probabilistic

In this article, we reviewed the association between alcohol drinking and head and neck cancer (HNC) and its subsites, using the available literature. Alcohol drinking is an established risk factor for HNC, and this association may be stronger among cancers of the oropharynx and hypopharynx than the oral cavity or larynx. In addition, higher alcohol consumption over a shorter period was more harmful than fewer alcohol consumption over a longer period, and the most frequently consumed alcoholic beverages in a population is likely to be associated with the highest risk of HNC in that population.

Alcohol misuse among mid- and later-life adults is a growing public health concern. Early life adversity (e.g., abuse, poverty) is a well-established risk factor for alcohol misuse in midlife and beyond. Neighborhood environments may also influence alcohol use and shape the extent to which early adversity contributes to misuse later in life, yet little is known about these relationships among midlife and older adults. Using a cross-sectional sample of 9759 adults aged 51+ from the Health and Retirement Study and a series of multilevel mixed effects logistic regression models, this study examin

In order to secure a safe drinking water supply, the setting of tolerable/acceptable ceilings of drinking water hygiene is required with regard to xenobiotics resulting from several anthropogenic impacts. This is done in practice by using drinking water guidelines or standards as quantitative objectives. The list of the new EU Directive or the German drinking-water standards is limited to those parameters that have the highest relevance for drinking water quality; nitro compounds (NCs) are not regulated. Because other substances contained in water can also represent a hazard for human health,

Alcohol abuse is a major public health problem worldwide. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that control regular drinking may help to reduce hazards of alcohol consumption. While immunological mechanisms have been related to alcohol drinking, most studies reported changes in immune function that are secondary to alcohol use. In this report, we analyse how the gene "TRAF family member-associated NF-κB activator" (TANK) affects alcohol drinking behavior. Based on our recent discovery in a large GWAS dataset that suggested an association of TANK, SNP rs197273, with alcohol drinking, we repor

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol abuse both are negatively associated with health, and alcohol misuse may mediate the relationship between PTSD and functional health outcomes. The present study tested for such mediation using self-report measures of PTSD symptoms, hazardous alcohol use, and health functioning in 151 U.S. veterans (136 men and 15 women) of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan recruited from a Veterans Affairs primary care clinic. Based on established cut scores, 39.1% screened positive for PTSD and 26.5% screened positive for hazardous drinking. PTSD symptoms and ha

We studied the effect of nitrate contamination of drinking water on volume and function of the thyroid in human populations exposed to different nitrate levels in their drinking water. Two sets of low and medium (tap) water, respectively medium and high (well) water nitrate exposure groups were compared. Drinking of nitrate-contaminated water was dose-dependently related with 24-h urinary nitrate excretion and salivary nitrate levels. No iodine deficiency was observed in any of the nitrate exposure groups. A dose-dependent difference in the volume of the thyroid was observed between low and me

A postal survey was conducted to gain information on the use of policies on oral intake, selection of mothers and type of intake given during established labour by all maternity units in England and Wales. A response rate of 91.6% (351 out of 383) was achieved; 79.5% of units had a written policy for oral intake, 96.4% of units allowed mothers some form of oral intake and 68.3% of these units selected mothers according to risk categories. Of the 268 units allowing oral intake, 67.2% gave drink only and 32.8% drink and food. Of those allowing food, all but 13.6% had a selection policy. Of the 8

BACKGROUND: Whether brief versions of the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) can be used as graded severity measures is largely unknown. We examined the performance of eight such brief screeners in a prison population, and compared their effectiveness in detecting hazardous drinking, harmful drinking, and possible alcohol dependence as classified by the full ten-item AUDIT.
METHODS: The study sample included pre-prison drinkers who participated in the Norwegian Offender Mental Health and Addiction (NorMA) study (n = 758). We conducted receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal ideation has increased among Latinx individuals in the last decade. Smoking increases the likelihood of suicidal ideation but work on Latinx smokers is minimal. Hazardous drinking and emotion dysregulation could be factors related to suicidal ideation among Latinx smokers, as has been evident in non-Latinx White samples. The current study sought to examine the main and interactive effects of emotion dysregulation and hazardous drinking in relation to suicidal ideation among Latinx daily-smokers.
METHODS: Participants were 371 Spanish-speaking daily-smokers (58.8% female; M
