Exposure to teflubenzuron reduces drought tolerance of collembolans.

Chitin synthesis inhibitors (CSIs) are commonly used insecticides compromising cuticle formation and structure in arthropods. Arthropods rely on intact cuticles to maintain water balance and cellular homeostasis to survive in different weather conditions. We hypothesized that physiological impacts of CSIs may make arthropods more vulnerable to harsh environmental conditions, such as extreme heat, cold or drought. The aim of this study was to investigate if pre-exposure to teflubenzuron (a common CSI) would influence Folsomia candida's (Collembola: Isotomidae) sensitivity to natural stressors.

Two Clones, Two Paths: divergent intrinsic xylem traits and hydraulic responses to prolonged drought in poplar.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of droughts, challenging the growth, hydraulic function and survival of woody plants. Poplar is a fast-growing species widely cultivated for biomass and cellulose production, but it is also highly sensitive to water deficit, with substantial variation among species and clones. METHODS: This study compared the drought responses of two Populus×canadensis clones, 'Tucano' and 'San Martino', under gradually imposed, prolonged water stress. Physiological traits and intrinsic wood anatomical characteristics revealed diffe

Comparative physiological and transcriptomic analyses reveal genotype specific response to drought stress in Siberian wildrye (Elymus sibiricus).

Siberian wildrye (Elymus sibiricus) is a xero-mesophytic forage grass with high nutritional quality and stress tolerance. Among its numerous germplasm resources, some possess superior drought resistance. In this study, we firstly investigated the physiological differences between the leaves of drought-tolerant (DT) and drought-sensitive (DS) genotypes under different field water contents (FWC) in soil culture. The results showed that, under drought stress, DT maintained a lower leaf water potential for water absorption, sustained higher photosynthetic efficiency, and reduced oxidative damage i

Lamiaceae family-derived endophytic fungi: induced tolerance to drought stress in Thymus vulgaris plants.

BACKGROUND: Thymus vulgaris is a valuable medicinal plant widely cultivated for its aromatic and medicinal properties. However, like many plants, T. vulgaris faces challenges such as drought stress, which significantly affects its growth, morphological, physiological, and biochemical processes. Understanding how endophytic fungi isolated from Lamiaceae family influence T. vulgaris under varying watering regimes can enhance its resilience against drought stress. This study aims to assess the impact of individual and co-inoculation of three native endophytic species, i.e., Fusarium sp. (F1), Cla

Response of tomatoes to inactivated endophyte LSE01 under combined stress of high-temperature and drought.

Endophytes can assist crops in adapting to high temperatures and drought conditions, thereby reducing agricultural losses. However, the mechanism through which endophytes regulate crop resistance to high temperatures and drought stress remains unclear, and concerns regarding safety and stability exist with active endophytes. Thus, heat-treated endophytic bacteria LSE01 (HTB) were employed as a novel microbial fertilizer to investigate their effects on plant adaptation to high temperatures and drought conditions. The results indicated that the diameter and weight of tomatoes treated with HTB un

Identification of drought-tolerant and stable mung bean genotypes using stress tolerance indices.

BACKGROUND: Mung bean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) is an important grain legume increasingly cultivated in water-limited environments. However, strong genotype × environment interaction (GEI) often complicates the identification of broadly adapted and drought-tolerant genotypes. This study integrated multi-environment phenotypic evaluation with molecular characterization to identify superior mung bean genotypes for stressful environments. RESULTS: Nine mung bean genotypes were evaluated under two irrigation regimes across two growing seasons. Environmental effects accounted for more than half o

Detecting drought stress from the leaf to the landscape: is canopy structure or leaf desiccation more influential in tree canopy spectral responses to declining water?

Remotely sensed measurements of equivalent water thickness (EWT) derived from visible-shortwave infrared imaging spectroscopy data have the potential to revolutionize how we monitor drought in natural ecosystems. However, the mechanistic underpinnings of EWT measurements are still relatively unknown. We collected coincident measurements of leaf spectra, leaf water content, and leaf water potential over the course of a tabletop leaf drydown for 13 tree species. We then used a vegetation radiative transfer model to scale these measurements from the leaf to canopy scale, simulating how a leaf dry

Radial branch hydraulics and cellular injury thresholds in poplar: insights from controlled dehydration and high-resolution dendrometry.

Branch water release and radial exchange influence drought responses. Although mechanistic models describe radial hydraulic and storage dynamics, experimental quantification of hydraulic capacitance (C) and radial resistance (Rr) across broad ranges of xylem water-potential (Ψx), particularly under severe dehydration, remains limited. We quantified how C and Rr vary with Ψx in Populus albaL., assessed the value of coupling controlled osmotic dehydration with high-resolution dendrometry, and evaluated cellular damage and bud viability across increasing dehydration levels. Branch segments were s

β-carotene enhances drought tolerance in fenugreek by modulating antioxidant defense and redox homeostasis.

Drought stress is one of the main abiotic factors that modulates the morphology and physiology of crops. This study investigated the effect of foliar application of β-carotene on the growth, physiological, and biochemical responses of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) under drought stress conditions. A pot experiment was conducted using two varieties, Kasuri and Local, under two drought stress levels (control and 50% field capacity), and three β-carotene concentrations (0, 100, and 200 ppm) were applied. Drought stress significantly declined shoot fresh weight up to 35.02% and 58.04%, a

Introducing silica-solubilizing and plant growth-promoting bacteria from sugarcane as inducers of drought stress tolerance.

Today’s sugarcane cultivation is faced with abiotic stresses including drought, salinity, heat and water limitation leading to, its reduced growth, yield, and economic productivity. Given the significant role of silica in alleviating these negative effects as well as pathogens, silica solubilizing bacteria opens an eco-friendly and sustainable approach to overcome these challenges. The aim was to find native silicate solubilizing bacteria from sugarcane and assessment their plant growth-promoting potential. Extensive screening was done from five sugarcane fields and symbiont bacterial species

Effect of melatonin on seed germination of Cichorium glandulosum under drought stress.

Cichorium glandulosum, a valuable medicinal herb in Uyghur traditional medicine, mainly reproduces via seeds. Drought stress severely restricts its seed germination and threatens yield stability in the major growing areas. Although melatonin is known to protect seeds against drought in many crops, its roles in this medicinal species remain unclear. In this study, seed priming with 200 μM melatonin was applied to alleviate the adverse effects of drought simulated by 10% PEG-6000, followed by physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses. Melatonin significantly improved seed germinati

Hydrogen Sulfide Regulates Energy Production to Delay Leaf Senescence Induced by Drought Stress in Arabidopsis.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a novel gasotransmitter in both mammals and plants. H2S plays important roles in various plant developmental processes and stress responses. Leaf senescence is the last developmental stage and is a sequential degradation process that eventually leads to leaf death. A mutation of the H2S-producing enzyme-encoding gene L-cysteine desulfhydrase1 (DES1) leads to premature leaf senescence but the underlying mechanisms are not clear. In this present study, wild-type, DES1 defective mutant (des1) and over-expression (OE-DES1) Arabidopsis plants were used to investigate the u

CmoPIP1-4 confers drought tolerance in pumpkin by altering hydrogen sulfide signaling.

Drought is a major limiting factor for the growth and development of pumpkins. Plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs) are major water channels that play a crucial role in the regulation of cellular water status and solute trafficking during drought conditions. CmoPIP1-4 is a plasma membrane-localized protein that is significantly upregulated in roots and leaves under drought-stress conditions. In this study, the overexpression of CmoPIP1-4 enhances drought resistance in yeast. In contrast, CRISPR-mediated CmoPIP1-4 knockout in pumpkin roots increased drought sensitivity. This increased drou

Role of Ca2+ in drought stress signaling in wheat seedlings.

Plants use complex signal transduction pathways to perceive and react to various biotic and/or abiotic stresses. As a consequence of this signaling, plants can modify their metabolism to adapt themselves to new conditions. One such change is the accumulation of proline in response to drought and salinity stresses. We have studied drought and salinity induced proline accumulation and the roles of Ca2+ (10 mM) and indoleacetic acid (IAA, 0.3 mM) in this response. Subjecting seedlings to both drought (6% polyethylene glycol, PEG) and salinity (150 mM NaCl) stress resulted in a dramatic increase i

Comparative physiology and cellular responses of different peanut cultivars under PEG-induced drought at seedling stage.

BACKGROUND: Tolerance to drought stress varies among peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cultivars, drought-tolerant cultivars maintained robust root volume coupled with intensified antioxidant enzyme activity and osmotic substance but drought-sensitive cultivars adversely. It is vital to identify the underlying mechanism to induce root volume decreased except for the reasons mention above or the possible physiology and cellular responses under drought. Therefore, two drought-tolerant cultivars, Nonghua 5 (NH5) and Huayu 22 (HY22), and two drought-sensitive cultivars, Nonghua 16 (NH16) and Fuhua 18 (

A Soybean bZIP Transcription Factor GmbZIP19 Confers Multiple Biotic and Abiotic Stress Responses in Plant.

The basic leucine zipper (bZIP) is a plant-specific transcription factor family that plays crucial roles in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, little is known about the function of bZIP genes in soybean. In this study, we isolated a bZIP gene, GmbZIP19, from soybean. A subcellular localization study of GmbZIP19 revealed its nucleus localization. We showed that GmbZIP19 expression was significantly induced by ABA (abscisic acid), JA (jasmonic acid) and SA (salicylic acid), but reduced under salt and drought stress conditions. Further, GmbZIP19 overexpression Arabidopsis lines sho

Sulfur dioxide improves drought tolerance through activating Ca2+ signaling pathways in wheat seedlings.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and drought are two important co-occurring abiotic stresses affecting the growth and productivity of plants. Here, we will investigate the role of Ca2+ in regulating antioxidant defense during drought or SO2/drought stress, and the effect of SO2 pretreatment on the physiological response of wheat seedlings to drought stress. The results showed that exogenous Ca2+ increased the activities of SOD, CAT and POD, and reduced the contents of H2O2 and MDA in drought-treated wheat seedlings, suggesting Ca2+ could improve drought tolerance by promoting antioxidant defense in plants

Transcriptome analysis of drought-responsive genes regulated by hydrogen sulfide in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) leaves.

Drought is an environmental factor that deeply impacts wheat yield and quality. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a known regulator of drought resistance in plants. To preliminarily elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of H2S on drought tolerance, the effects of H2S on drought-responsive genes were investigated by transcriptome analysis. As a result, a total of 7552 transcripts not only responded to drought stress but also exhibited differential expression relative to the polyethylene glycol (PEG) treatment (P) and the NaHS pretreatment with PEG treatment (SP). GO categories of 'transport' were especia

SmNAC36 promotes the biosynthesis of bioactive compounds and drought tolerance in Salvia miltiorrhiza.

Although drought stress typically suppresses plant growth and reduces crop yields, mild drought stress paradoxically enhances the accumulation of bioactive compounds such as salvianolic acids and tanshinones in the medicinal plant Salvia miltiorrhiza. However, the regulatory mechanisms that underlie this phenomenon remain poorly understood. In this study, we identified the NAC transcription factor (TF) SmNAC36 as a key regulator of bioactive compound synthesis and drought response in S. miltiorrhiza. Overexpression of SmNAC36 enhanced the accumulation of tanshinones and salvianolic acids and i
