Dry Needling of Anterior Neck Muscles in a Patient With Muscle Tension Dysphonia: A Case Report.

Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is a functional voice disorder commonly treated with voice therapy. However, the role of physiotherapy-specifically dry needling (DN)-has not been explored in the literature. This case report describes a 40-year-old male with persistent vocal fatigue, hoarseness, and anterior neck tightness associated with MTD. He underwent three sessions of DN targeting the anterior neck muscles. Outcome measures included the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), which improved from 73 to 54, and the Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) score, which improved from 37 to 24. The patient a

Dry Needling for Tension-Type Headache: A Scoping Review on Intervention Procedures, Muscle Targets, and Outcomes.

Background/Objectives: Tension-type headache (TTH) is the most prevalent form of primary headache. The etiology of TTH is not yet fully understood, although it is associated with the presence of myofascial trigger points (MTPs) in cervical and facial muscles. Dry needling (DN) therapy has emerged as an effective and safe non-pharmacological option for pain relief, but there are a lack of systematic reviews focused on its specific characteristics in TTH. The aim of this paper is to examine the characteristics and methodologies of DN in managing TTH. Methods: A scoping review was conducted with

The Effect of Combining Spinal Manipulation and Dry Needling in Individuals With Nonspecific Low Back Pain.

Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common and costly musculoskeletal conditions impacting health care in the United States. The development of multimodal strategies of treatment is imperative in order to curb the growing incidence and prevalence of LBP. Spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), dry needling (DN), and exercise are common nonpharmacological treatments for LBP. This study is a 3-armed parallel-group design randomized clinical trial. We enrolled and randomized 96 participants with LBP into a multimodal strategy of treatment consisting of a combination of DN and SMT, DN only, and SMT

Ultrasound-guided dry needling of masticatory muscles in trigeminal neuralgia - A case series of 35 patients.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TGN) is considered a sensory neuropathy. However, reports of pain on chewing/speaking suggest a masticatory myofascial involvement. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of ultrasound-guided dry needling (USGDN), which deactivates myofascial trigger points in masticatory, neck, and facial muscles on TGN symptoms. METHODS: Charts of 35 patients treated for TGN were retrospectively reviewed. Treatment was USGDN alone or combined with trigeminal ganglion/mandibular nerve pulsed radiofrequency (PRF), followed by yoga mudras to stretch masticatory and facial muscles.

Dry Needling Produces Mild Injuries Irrespective to Muscle Stiffness and Tension in Ex Vivo Mice Muscles.

Numerous studies have suggested that the myofascial trigger points are responsible for most of the myofascial pain syndrome, so it seems reasonable that its destruction is a good therapeutic solution. The effectiveness of dry needling (DN) has been confirmed in muscles with myofascial trigger points, hypertonicity, and spasticity. The objective of this study is to analyze the need of repetitive punctures on muscles in different situations. The levator auris longus (LAL) muscle and gastrocnemius muscle from adult male Swiss mice were dissected and maintained alive, while being submerged in an o

[Understanding of the trigger points of myalgia: acupuncture and dry needling exploration and modern acupuncture mechanism].

The similarities and differences between trigger points of myalgia and acupoints were explored. Nodules could be detected by B-ultrasound at trigger points of myalgia, but not acupoints. In clinical symptoms, the referred pain pathway of trigger points of myalgia is similar with the pathway of acupuncture meridian. Therefore, the location of trigger points of myalgia should take referred pain as pathway, which is similar with locating acupoints as meridian. Acupuncture at trigger points of myalgia takes jumping feeling as criterion, while acupuncture at acupoints are mainly based on acid swell
