House dust contains various organic and inorganic materials. The most important parts of the house dust are dust mites causing allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis and seasonal keratoconjunctivitis. After investigating three fatal explosions in manufacturing plants, the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) has concluded: The explosive hazard of combustible dust is not well known, and helping industry to understand this hazard is a priority. In a 70 years old worker in the bauxite industry in Surinam, who died of myocardial infarction, bauxite deposits were found in the lung in areas of mild pulmonary fibrosis. The identification and the localization within these areas of the bauxite deposits was determined by a histochemical mineralization technique and by scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe analysis. The possible relationship between the presence of bauxite in the lung tissue and the pulmonary fibrosis is discussed.

The general workroom air of eleven dental laboratories has been surveyed with respect to dust levels arising from cutting, grinding or polishing various dental materials like chromium-cobalt-, nickel- or gold alloys, amalgam and gypsum models, porcelain or denture base material. The materials were processed with cut or lathe wheels and various stones. The levels of the elements aluminium, calcium, cobalt, copper, chromium, gold, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, nickel, silicon, silver, tin or titanium present in the collected dust samples did not exceed the respective threshold limit values.

The inhalation of organic dusts can provoke in man various types of diseases, being the respiratory system the most frequently involved. A great number of organic dusts provoke, even in small amounts, in genetically pre-disposed atopic subjects, type I allergic reactions, i.e. bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, mediated by IgE reaginic antibodies. AIMS: To assess hazards associated with exposure to dust in the London Underground railway and to provide an informed opinion on the risks to workers and the travelling public of exposure to tunnel dust.
