Using technology to support children with dyscalculia in pre-primary and primary school: insights, challenges and opportunities.

PURPOSE: Developmental Dyscalculia (DD) is a specific neurodevelopmental learning disability that significantly impairs an individual's ability to learn and process mathematical concepts. Given that preschool and primary school years represent critical windows for early intervention, this article aims to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of current assistive technology applications designed to support children with DD during this foundational educational period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study systematically examines the landscape of current technological interventions and cla

Uncovering latent cognitive, metacognitive, and neural bases of problem-solving deficits in children with developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) affects 7-10% of children and is characterized by persistent difficulties in arithmetic problem-solving, which depends on the dynamic interplay between cognitive and metacognitive control processes governing strategy execution and selection. Conventional behavioral and neuroimaging approaches do not simultaneously quantify these latent processes and link them to distributed neural mechanisms, leaving the neurocognitive and metacognitive underpinnings of DD insufficiently characterized. To address this gap, we integrated Bayesian computational modeling with whole-

Performance on curriculum-based mathematics assessments in developmental dyscalculia: the effect of content domain and question format.

Developmental Dyscalculia (DD) is characterised by persistent difficulties in learning mathematical skills, which usually becomes apparent in the early years of schooling. Traditionally, DD is known to affect children's arithmetic processing, whilst other domains of mathematics receive much less research attention. Nevertheless, contemporary diagnostic guidelines suggest that DD is linked to widespread and diverse difficulties, both within and outside of the domain of numbers. This study examined the performance (i.e., accuracy and number of questions attempted) of children on a curriculum-bas

Adolescents with Developmental Dyscalculia Do Not Have a Generalized Magnitude Deficit - Processing of Discrete and Continuous Magnitudes.

The link between number and space has been discussed in the literature for some time, resulting in the theory that number, space and time might be part of a generalized magnitude system. To date, several behavioral and neuroimaging findings support the notion of a generalized magnitude system, although contradictory results showing a partial overlap or separate magnitude systems are also found. The possible existence of a generalized magnitude processing area leads to the question how individuals with developmental dyscalculia (DD), known for deficits in numerical-arithmetical abilities, proce

Nature and origins of mathematics difficulties in very preterm children: a different etiology than developmental dyscalculia.

BACKGROUND: Children born very preterm (<32 wk) are at high risk for mathematics learning difficulties that are out of proportion to other academic and cognitive deficits. However, the etiology of mathematics difficulties in very preterm children is unknown. We sought to identify the nature and origins of preterm children's mathematics difficulties. METHODS: One hundred and fifteen very preterm children aged 8-10 y were assessed in school with a control group of 77 term-born classmates. Achievement in mathematics, working memory, visuospatial processing, inhibition, and processing speed were

Developmental Dyscalculia is Characterized by Order Processing Deficits: Evidence from Numerical and Non-Numerical Ordering Tasks.

This study tested the hypothesis that individuals with dyscalculia have an order processing deficit. The ordering measures included both numerical and non-numerical ordering tasks, and ordering of both familiar and novel sequences was assessed. Magnitude processing/estimation tasks and measures of inhibition skills were also administered. The participants were 20 children with developmental dyscalculia, and 20 children without maths difficulties. The two groups were closely matched on age, gender, socio-economic status, educational experiences, IQ and reading ability. The findings revealed dif

What Skills Could Distinguish Developmental Dyscalculia and Typically Developing Children: Evidence From a 2-Year Longitudinal Screening.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a mathematics learning disorder that affects approximately 5% to 7% of the population. This study aimed to detect the underlying domain-specific and domain-general differences between DD and typically developing (TD) children. We recruited 9-year-old primary school children to form the DD group via a 2-year longitudinal screening process. In total, 75 DD children were screened from 1,657 children after the one-time screening, and 13 DD children were screened from 1,317 children through a consecutive 2-year longitudinal screening. In total, 13 experimental task

Asymmetrical interference between number and item size perception provides evidence for a domain specific impairment in dyscalculia.

Dyscalculia, a specific learning disability that impacts arithmetical skills, has previously been associated to a deficit in the precision of the system that estimates the approximate number of objects in visual scenes (the so called 'number sense' system). However, because in tasks involving numerosity comparisons dyscalculics' judgements appears disproportionally affected by continuous quantitative dimensions (such as the size of the items), an alternative view linked dyscalculia to a domain-general difficulty in inhibiting task-irrelevant responses. To arbitrate between these views, we eval

Prevalence of risk for dyslexia, risk for dyscalculia, and their comorbidity in Spanish primary education: gender difference and socioeconomic status.

Dyslexia and dyscalculia frequently co-occur; however, population-based estimates from Spain, remain scarce. This study aims to assess the prevalence of risk for dyslexia (RDyx), risk for dyscalculia (RDC), and their comorbidity (RDyx+RDC) and to evaluate their distributions by gender and socioeconomic status. A total of 691 Spanish students in 5th-6th grade were assessed with computerized screening tasks in reading and mathematics. Risk groups were defined using a cut-off of -1 SD (16th percentile) within each domain. Prevalence was 8.5% (6.6-10.9%) for RDyx, 4.2% (2.8-6.0%) for RDC, and 2.0%

The two-network framework of number processing: a step towards a better understanding of the neural origins of developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia is a specific learning disorder that persists over lifetime and can have an enormous impact on personal, health-related, and professional aspects of life. Despite its central importance, the origin both at the cognitive and neural level is not yet well understood. Several classification schemas of dyscalculia have been proposed, sometimes together with an associated deficit at the neural level. However, these explanations are (a) not providing an exhaustive framework that is at levels with the observed complexity of developmental dyscalculia at the behavioral level an

Time-Resolved and Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Complex Cognitive Processes and their Role in Disorders like Developmental Dyscalculia.

The aim of this article is to report on the importance and challenges of a time-resolved and spatio-temporal analysis of fMRI data from complex cognitive processes and associated disorders using a study on developmental dyscalculia (DD). Participants underwent fMRI while judging the incorrectness of multiplication results, and the data were analyzed using a sequence of methods, each of which progressively provided more a detailed picture of the spatio-temporal aspect of this disease. Healthy subjects and subjects with DD performed alike behaviorally though they exhibited parietal disparities u

Nonsymbolic-Magnitude Deficit in Adults With Developmental Dyscalculia: Evidence of Impaired Size Discrimination but Intact Size Constancy.

Although researchers have debated whether a core deficit of nonsymbolic representation of magnitude underlies developmental dyscalculia (DD), research has mostly focused on numerosity processing. We probed the possibility of a general magnitude deficit in individuals with DD and asked whether sensitivity to size varied in contexts of depth ordering and size constancy. We measured full psychometric functions in size-discrimination tasks in 12 participants with DD and 13 control participants. Results showed that although people with DD exhibited veridical perceived magnitude, their sensitivity t

Are numerical abilities determined at early age? A brain morphology study in children and adolescents with and without developmental dyscalculia.

The intraparietal sulcus (IPS) has been associated with numerical processing. A recent study reported that the IPS sulcal pattern was associated with arithmetic and symbolic number abilities in children and adults. In the present study, we evaluated the link between numerical abilities and the IPS sulcal pattern in children with Developmental Dyscalculia (DD) and typically developing children (TD), extending previous analyses considering other sulcal features and the postcentral sulcus (PoCS). First, we confirm the longitudinal sulcal pattern stability of the IPS and the PoCS. Second, we found

Altered resting-state functional connectivity in the prefrontal cortex is related to the development of dyscalculia in patients with Turner syndrome.

AIM: Patients with Turner syndrome have a high rate of developmental dyscalculia, but the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms are not well-understood. Some studies have implicated visuospatial impairments in patients with Turner syndrome, but others have focused on poor procedural skills in patients with Turner syndrome. This study used brain imaging data to test these two alternative views. METHODS: This study recruited 44 girls with Turner syndrome (mean age,  12.91 years; SD,  2.02), with 13 (29.5%) of them meeting the criterion for developmental dyscalculia, and 14 normally developing gi

Multi-method brain imaging reveals impaired representations of number as well as altered connectivity in adults with dyscalculia.

Two hypotheses have been proposed about the etiology of neurodevelopmental learning disorders, such as dyslexia and dyscalculia: representation impairments and disrupted access to representations. We implemented a multi-method brain imaging approach to directly investigate these representation and access hypotheses in dyscalculia, a highly prevalent but understudied neurodevelopmental disorder in learning to calculate. We combined several magnetic resonance imaging methods and analyses, including univariate and multivariate analyses, functional and structural connectivity. Our sample comprised

Beyond the sum of their parts: A multi-dimensional approach to dyscalculia-dyslexia comorbidity integrating studies of the brain, behavior, and genetics.

Mathematics learning disorders (MD) and reading learning disorders (RD) are persistent conditions that interfere with success in academic and daily-life tasks, and cannot be attributed to intellectual disabilities, sensory deficits, or environmental factors. Prevalence rates of MD and RD are estimated at 5-10 % of school-age children, and their comorbidity (MDRD) is highly prevalent, with around 40 % of children with MD also experiencing RD. Despite this high comorbidity rate, research on MDRD has received less attention compared to isolated conditions, leaving its neurocognitive mechanisms un
