On the classification of hydropic ear disease (Menière's disease).

More than 150 years after its initial description by Prosper Menière, the disease named after him is still at the center of scientific debates. Two recent developments have specifically created a breeding ground for controversy: (1) Since its first description 10 years ago, magnetic resonance imaging diagnosis of endolymphatic hydrops in living patients has seen an increasing and worldwide application. (2) The Bárány Society Classification Committee published diagnostic criteria for Menière's disease in 2015 and proposed a concept of the disease that has elicited widespread criticism. In order

Advances and prospects of 3D air-liquid interface cultured middle ear epithelial cells and inner ear organoids in otologic diseases.

Hearing loss and vestibular disorders represent major otologic disease challenges. Traditional disease models struggle to accurately mimic human otologic pathologies due to species differences and limited physiological relevance. Recent advancements in otic vitro models have provided crucial tools for related research. The core representatives include the middle ear epithelial cell model cultured at the air-liquid interface (ALI) and inner ear organoids. ALI culture of middle ear epithelial cells highly mimics middle ear tissue structure and function, finding applications in drug screening and

Microbiome and its Association with Diseases of the Ear, Nose and Pharynx.

INTRODUCTION: The microbiome refers to the entire community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, their genes, and the environment that surrounds them. The microbiome is found in the gut, skin, and the oral and nasal cavities, and is an important interface between the human body and the environment outside. Notably, the ear, nose, and throat or pharynx microbiome remains poorly studied. Therefore, the present review discusses the association of the microbiome with various diseases of the ear, nose, and pharynx. METHODS: The literature was obtained by conducting a comprehensiv

Ear manifestations of connective tissue diseases: A dermatologic, histopathologic, and clinicopathologic review.

Connective tissue diseases comprise a spectrum of autoimmune disorders characterized by chronic inflammation and immune-mediated injury affecting the skin, vasculature, cartilage, and internal organs. The external ear, owing to its unique composition of elastic cartilage, thin dermis, and end-arterial vasculature, represents a visible and diagnostically informative site of connective tissue disease involvement. Auricular lesions may manifest as erythematous chondritis, purpura, necrosis, nodules, or sclerotic plaques, often providing dermatologists with early clinical clues to systemic disease

Deep learning multi-classification of middle ear diseases using synthetic tympanic images.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in artificial intelligence have facilitated the automatic diagnosis of middle ear diseases using endoscopic tympanic membrane imaging. AIM: We aimed to develop an automated diagnostic system for middle ear diseases by applying deep learning techniques to tympanic membrane images obtained during routine clinical practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To augment the training dataset, we explored the use of generative adversarial networks (GANs) to produce high-quality synthetic tympanic images that were subsequently added to the training data. Between 2016 and 2021, we col

Auditory function in women with autoimmune inner ear diseases and their offspring.

OBJECTIVE: The precise cause of congenital sensorineural hearing loss (CSNHL) is unclear in many cases. In a previous study we found that offspring from guinea pigs with autoimmune sensorineural hearing loss (ASNHL) exhibited signs of SNHL. Here we studied women with autoimmune inner ear diseases (AIED) and their offspring. Our aim was to determine if autoimmune damage may be one of the causes of CSNHL. METHODS: Thirty-eight pregnant women with AIED were recruited. Thirty-three had ASNHL; one with autoimmune delayed endolymphatic hydrops (ADEH) and four with autoimmune Meniere's disease (AIMD

Classifying Neurodegenerative Diseases from Selected Temporal EEG Electrodes: Towards Ear-EEG Applications.

Dementia is the seventh leading cause of death globally, with over 55 million people affected. As there is no cure to dementia, early detection is essential. Machine learning applied to EEG has been proposed for enabling early dementia detection, with multiple studies demonstrating successful binary classification of dementias. As a step towards the use of a more accessible tool, ear-EEG, this study investigates the extent to which two common forms of dementia, Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Fronto-temporal Dementia (FTD), can be classified from temporal electrode EEG using a multiclass classifi
