The most conspicuous aural adaptation in northern elephant seals (NES) is complete absence of an auricle and a tortuous collapsed external acoustic meatus. The NES epitympanic recess contains massive ossicles immersed in the middle ear cavernous sinuses. Engorgement of the cavernous sinuses would make ossicles fully buoyant during deep diving. NES have a comparatively larger cochlear nerve, which carries a significantly larger number of axons than in terrestrial mammals, which would give them auditory ability similar to the obligate marine mammals such as cetaceans. Our calculations show that

Malformations of the ossicles in 52 ears of 48 patients were analyzed on the basis of surgical findings. The external meatus of each of these ears was patent. The long process of the incus and the stapes are frequently involved in this series of observations. There are distinct groups of ossicular anomalies, in each of which patients show similar degrees of hearing loss and ossicular findings. These include spindle handle, malleus bar, and dislocated annulus. Spindle handle gets its name from the shape of the malleus handle. There is disconnection between the long process of the incus and the

The auditory ossicles-malleus, incus and stapes-are the smallest bones in mammalian bodies and enable stable sound transmission to the inner ear. Sperm whales are one of the deepest diving aquatic mammals that produce and perceive sounds with extreme loudness greater than 180 dB and frequencies higher than 30 kHz. Therefore, it is of major interest to decipher the microstructural basis for these unparalleled hearing abilities. Using a suite of high-resolution imaging techniques, we reveal that auditory ossicles of sperm whales are highly functional, featuring an ultra-high matrix mineralizatio

Five different pathways are often suggested as important for bone conducted (BC) sound: (1) sound pressure in the ear canal, (2) inertia of the middle ear ossicles, (3) inertia of the inner ear fluid, (4) compression of the inner ear space, and (5) pressure transmission from the skull interior. The relative importance of these pathways was investigated with an acoustic-impedance model of the inner ear. The model incorporated data of BC generated ear canal sound pressure, middle ear ossicle motion, cochlear promontory vibration, and intracranial sound pressure. With BC stimulation at the mastoi

INTRODUCTION: The study of the middle ear and especially the ossicular chain in different species can bring interesting insights into the biomechanics of hearing. The ground squirrel's middle ear anatomy has not been studied as thoroughly as its other systems and organs.
METHODS: Our study describes the ear ossicles in this little-studied species, providing the morphological and morphometrical characteristics and a series of comparative data, in an attempt to characterise also some functional anatomy of the incus, malleus and stapes.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The malleus comprises the typical

High resolution images are used as a basis for finite-element modeling of the middle-ear structures to study their biomechanical function. Commonly used imaging techniques such as micro-computed tomography (CT) and optical microscopy require extensive sample preparation, processing or staining using contrast agents to achieve sufficient soft-tissue contrast. We compare imaging of middle-ear structures in unstained, non-decalcified human temporal bones using conventional absorption-contrast micro-CT and using synchrotron radiation phase-contrast imaging (SR-PCI). Four cadaveric temporal bones w

The use of carnivores as experimental models in auditory biology has led to a significant improvement regarding our understanding of the structure and function of the ear. Considering that data regarding the anatomy of the middle ear in the red fox are rare, this study aimed to describe the morphological and morphometrical features of the auditory ossicles in the red fox, as well as to provide their shape characteristics by geometric analysis. Nine adult red foxes were used in the study. The malleus, incus and stapes were extracted from the middle ear, prepared, photographed and measured using

CONCLUSION: The results of the present study reject the hypothesis that epithelial inclusions into the ossicles could cause cholesteatoma recurrences, but strongly suggest the performance of a safe cleaning procedure for ossicular remnants to make them usable in ossiculoplasty in patients with partially or non-encapsulated cholesteatoma.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to define, before any sort of cleaning procedure, if there is any epithelial inclusion inside the ossicles of patients with cholesteatoma and if the findings could be correlated with surgical aspect of cholesteatoma.

In the treatment of the various malformations of the external and middle ear (atresia of the bony canal, malformed ossicles, reduced volume of the middle ear in varying degrees, atypical course of the facial nerve), the indirect approach to the middle ear via the antrum appears to be the safest operative procedure for a tympanoplasty in cases of congenital atresia. A wide open external canal is required for a permanently successful hearing result. A special double plasty using skin and periosteum for the anterior canal wall has proved to be the method of choice.

Ossicular reconstruction is the rebuilding of the damaged middle ear. There are many different prosthesis and techniques used to reconstruct the middle ear ossicles. However, precision in the surgical procedures and prostheses used for ossiculoplasty are still imperfect. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2)/ atelocollagen composite for ossicular reconstruction implanted in the tympanic cavity of rat. The ossicles were extirpated by perforating the tympanic membranes of rats. rhBMP-2/atelocollagen composite was imp

Modifications of the morphology and acoustic properties of the ossicular chain are among the major changes that accompanied the adaptation of Cetacea to the aquatic environment. Thus, data on the middle ear ossicles of early whales are crucial clues to understand the first steps of the emblematic terrestrial/aquatic transition that occurred in that group. Yet, the delicate nature and very small size of these bones make their preservation in the fossil record extremely rare. Due to the scarcity of available data, major questions remain concerning the sound transmission pathways in early non-ful

Temporal bone computed tomography (CT) was used to examine 64 patients with impaired hearing due to inflammatory diseases of the middle year. In 21 patients, the pathological process was bilateral. A total of 85 series of temporal bone CT scans were analyzed. The patients' age ranged from 2 to 66 years. CT verified adhesive otitis media in 62 cases, otosclerosis in 7, local malformation of the auditory ossicles and/or the labyrinthine fenestrae in 11. No CT changes were revealed in 5 cases. The CT symptoms of adhesive otitis media were identified. These included soft tissue bands and/or soft t

The morphology of the mammalian middle ear-including the size, shape, and stiffness of individual ossicles-controls their vibrational response to sound and, is closely related to an animal's auditory capabilities. While the relationship between middle ear morphology and hearing frequency has been explored in living carnivorans, the size and shape of ossicles in fossil carnivorans have been sparsely documented. In this study, we present the first morphological data on four iconic carnivoran taxa from the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits: Smilodon fatalis, Panthera atrox, Canis dirus, and Arctodus simus.

BACKGROUND: Congenital ossicular anomalies include abnormalities of either one isolated ossicle or a combination of more than one. We report our patients with this condition and relate the findings to Cremers' classification.
METHODS: Chart records of patients with congenital ossicular anomalies who received exploratory tympanotomies from 1993 to 2001 were collected. The pre-operative hearing assessment, operative findings, reconstructive types and post-operative hearing results were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: Seventeen cases of ears that underwent exploratory tympanotomy were includ
