Poxvirus continues to pose public health concerns due to sporadic outbreaks, zoonotic transmission, and limited treatment options. The accessibility of vaccines and antivirals does not resolve the problems of drug resistance, adverse effects, and limited accessibility, which underscores the necessity to find different therapeutic approaches. This review aims to explore the potential of herbal therapy as an effective and accessible treatment for human poxvirus infections. A comprehensive analysis of 10 selected medicinal plants with reported antiviral activity against poxviruses. Data from in-v

The increasing emergence of anthelmintic-resistant parasitic isolates prompts us to reassess the management of intestinal strongylosis in horses. Additionally, societal demand is shifting toward reducing the use of chemical treatments, aligning with environmentally-friendly practices and the exploration of natural alternatives. In this context, we provide an initial view of the antiparasitic activity and the effect on immune circulating blood cells of three commercialized plant-based feed additives in ponies. Three treatments, based either on mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), echinacea (Echinacea

Four botanical polysaccharide preparations (from Astragalus, Echinacea, wolfberry, and kelp) were evaluated as immunopotentiators/adjuvants of a veterinary rabies vaccine. Results showed that lymphocyte proliferation and some cytokines were significantly elevated, with cellular immune responses skewed towards Th1 and Tc1. All four polysaccharides produced accelerated and enhanced effects on rabies-neutralizing antibody responses in mice and dogs. The results also indicated that certain botanical polysaccharides could be used in rabies vaccine formulations for early and persistent prophylaxis.

Reducing inappropriate antibiotic (AB) use by using effective non-antibiotic treatments is one strategy to prevent and reduce antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Wall. ex Nees, Pelargonium sidoides DC., Echinacea species and a combination of ivy (Hedera helix L.), primrose (Primula veris L./Primula elatior L.) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris L./Thymus zygis L.) have promising clinical effects in uncomplicated, acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) treatment. However, mechanistic evidence of these herbal treatments is lacking. The objective of this Pstudy is

The quality of medical plants used for the production of galenics or pharmacologically useful compounds is usually assessed by the content of biologically active compounds. Because most of these plants are grown in fields, this study focused on stimulation of active compounds by in vivo elicitation. Foliar application of elicitors on the immunostimulating medical plant purple coneflower ( Echinacea purpurea L. Moench.) grown on soil was used to increase the content of biologically active phenolics. Natural plant stress mediators and their derivatives (acetylsalicylic acid, salicylic acid, and

Cortisol, the main stress hormone of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, has been hypothesized to cause considerable detriment to cognitive function in both a time and concentration-dependent manner. However, there is a current lack of functional in vitro models available to evaluate the stress condition. Long-term potentiation (LTP) has served as a quantitative correlate for memory and learning through in vitro neuronal network responses to electrical stimuli, where a high-frequency stimulation (HFS) protocol on microelectrode arrays (MEAs) evaluates synaptic integrity related to h

Echinacoside (ECH), a natural phenylethanoid glycoside, was first isolated from Echinacea angustifolia DC. (Compositae) sixty years ago. It was found to possess numerous pharmacologically beneficial activities for human health, especially the neuroprotective and cardiovascular effects. Although ECH showed promising potential for treatment of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, some important issues arose. These included the identification of active metabolites as having poor bioavailability in prototype form, the definite molecular signal pathways or targets of ECH with the above effects, an

Heliopsis helianthoides is a perennial medicinal plant in the Asteraceae family, valued for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Despite its pharmacological significance, its chloroplast genome remains uncharacterized. Here, we report the first complete chloroplast genome of H. helianthoides, which is also the first for the genus Heliopsis. The genome is 151,140 bp in length with a typical quadripartite structure, containing 127 genes and a GC content of 37.6%. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that H. helianthoides clusters with Acmella, Echinacea, and Zinnia within

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies herbal preparations as food supplements. New herbal supplements and products are not governed by the strict FDA drug approval process and there is no premarket approval required. The FDA prohibits manufacturers and distributors from marketing adulterated or misbranded products but does not rigorously define safe practices. Scientific evidence related to herbal supplements is limited. Herbal supplements have been associated with adverse reactions and herbal-drug interactions. Information and precautions for 20 common herbal supplements, includin

Despite the global prevalence of herbal medicine use and the common perception of their safety, substantial evidence indicates a significant potential for clinically relevant herb-drug interactions that may affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of co-administered pharmaceuticals. This critical issue poses a considerable threat to patient safety and the effectiveness of conventional treatments, primarily through modulation of the cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzyme system, a key metabolic pathway for many drugs. This research aims to elucidate how herbal remedies affect CYP450 enzyme act

The effect of Alchinal (a complex preparation consisting of three substances: Echinacea purpurea extract, Allium sativum extract, cocoa) on the development of Trichinella spiralis infection in mice was studied. The preparation was administered to the animals orally, twice a day in 30 microl doses for 10 days after infecting mice with Trichinella larvae (500 larvae per mouse). It was demonstrated that after Alchinal administration, the number of adult forms (10 dpi--days post infection) and muscular larvae (36 dpi) significantly decreased. It is suggested that the remedy studied causes antipara

Herbal medicines are used by many patients. Their known or potential adverse events should be taken into account during treatment with herbal medicines. In this article adverse effects of commonly used herbs are presented. St. John's wort is known to be a potent inducer of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4 leading to reduced blood concentrations of a number of CYP3A4 substrates. For many other combinations evidence is sparse but due to a number of case reports of adverse interactions they should only cautiously be combined with certain critical dose drugs until their risk is fully assessed. Pertinent

The use of herbal supplements that promise to improve immune health has gained popularity among dermatology patients. However, there is little to no evidence that herbal supplements improve dermatologic conditions. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that Spirulina platensis, Aphanizomenon flos-aqua, Chlorella, Echinacea, and alfalfa activate immune cells via certain cytokines and chemokines. Case reports suggest the association of ingesting immunostimulatory herbs and the clinical onset or flares of diseases characterized by an exaggerated immune response such as lupus erythematos

In bacteria, multidrug-resistance pumps (MDRs) confer resistance to chemically unrelated amphipathic toxins. A major challenge in developing efficacious antibiotics is identifying antimicrobial compounds that are not rapidly pumped out of bacterial cells. The plant antimicrobial berberine, the active component of the medicinal plants echinacea and golden seal, is a cation that is readily extruded by bacterial MDRs, thereby rendering it relatively ineffective as a therapeutic agent. However, inhibition of MDR efflux causes a substantial increase in berberine antimicrobial activity, suggesting t

BACKGROUND: The use of medicinal plants is an option for livestock farmers who are not allowed to use allopathic drugs under certified organic programs or cannot afford to use allopathic drugs for minor health problems of livestock.
METHODS: In 2003 we conducted semi-structured interviews with 60 participants obtained using a purposive sample. Medicinal plants are used to treat a range of conditions. A draft manual prepared from the data was then evaluated by participants at a participatory workshop.
RESULTS: There are 128 plants used for ruminant health and diets, representing several plant
