Two-dimensional T2*-weighted multi-shot echo-planar imaging to detect cerebral microbleeds in neurocognitive disorders: A time-efficient alternative to susceptibility weighted angiography.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of ultra-fast two-dimensional (2D) T2*-weighted multi-shot echo-planar imaging (MS-EPI) for the detection of cerebral microbleeds (CMB) in cognitive disorders. METHODS: Sixty-eight patients referred for neuroimaging to investigate cognitive disorders underwent 3 T MR imaging, with both 2D T2*-weighted MS-EPI and susceptibility-weighted angiography (SWAN). Microbleeds were separately assessed on 2D T2*-weighted MS-EPI and SWAN by 2 raters. Intermodality and interobserver (n = 2 raters) agreement was calculated using the Cohen's kappa. RESULTS: In assessi

Diffusion-Weighted MRI to Assess Sacroiliitis: Improved Image Quality and Diagnostic Performance of Readout-Segmented Echo-Planar Imaging (EPI) Over Conventional Single-Shot EPI.

BACKGROUND. DWI using single-shot echo-planar imaging (ss-EPI) is prone to artifacts, signal-intensity dropout, and T2* blurring. Readout-segmented echo-planar imaging (rs-EPI) may improve image quality in DWI of the sacroiliac joints. OBJECTIVE. The purposes of this study were, first, to qualitatively and quantitatively compare image quality between ss-EPI and rs-EPI DWI of the sacroiliac joints; and, second, to evaluate whether ADC values derived from ss-EPI and rs-EPI can differentiate disease activity in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). METHODS. This retrospective study inclu

Detectability and anatomical correlation of middle ear cholesteatoma using fused thin slice non-echo planar imaging diffusion-weighted image and magnetic resonance cisternography (FTS-nEPID).

Cholesteatomas show high intensity in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). We performed fused thin slice non-echo planar imaging (EPI) DWI and magnetic resonance cisternography (FTS-nEPID) for cholesteatoma patients to increase the detectability of FTS-nEPID for cholesteatoma. The subjects are 77 consecutive patients who underwent FTS-nEPID as a preoperative study (mean age: 53.3±21.8, 47 men and 30 women). Otorhinolaryngologists performed the operations. We anatomically classified the middle ear into four portions. A radiologist evaluated the images for cholesteatoma and assessed the anatomical

An echo-planar imaging sequence is superior to a steady-state free precession sequence for visual as well as quantitative assessment of cardiac magnetic resonance stress perfusion.

BACKGROUND: To assess myocardial perfusion, steady-state free precession cardiac magnetic resonance (SSFP, CMR) was compared with gradient-echo-echo-planar imaging (GRE-EPI) using myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS) as reference. METHODS: Cardiac magnetic resonance perfusion was recorded in 30 patients with SSFP and in another 30 patients with GRE-EPI. Timing and extent of inflow delay to the myocardium was visually assessed. Signal-to-noise (SNR) and contrast-to-noise (CNR) ratios were calculated. Myocardial scar was visualized with a phase-sensitive inversion recovery sequence (PSIR). A

Anatomical details of the brainstem and cranial nerves visualized by high resolution readout-segmented multi-shot echo-planar diffusion-weighted images using unidirectional MPG at 3T.

We compared diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with readout-segmented multi-shot echo-planar imaging (rs-EPI) and single-shot EPI, both using unidirectional motion-probing gradient, in 10 patients for visualization of the anatomical structures in the brainstem. DWI by rs-EPI was significantly better than DWI by single-shot EPI for visualizing the medial longitudinal fasciculus, lateral lemniscus, corticospinal tract, and seventh/eighth cranial nerves and offered significantly less distortion of the brainstem.

Vasodilatory response of border zones to acetazolamide before and after endarterectomy : an echo planar imaging-dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced MRI study in patients with high-grade unilateral internal carotid artery stenosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The importance of hemodynamic changes related to a high-grade internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis remains a matter of controversy. Areas between the vascular territories of major cerebral arteries, namely, the border zones, may be selectively vulnerable to hemodynamic alteration. The aim of this study was to search for any hemodynamic impact of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) on vasodilatory response, in particular, within the border zones, by means of multislice dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI. METHODS: Thirteen patients with a high-grade unilateral ICA stenosis (

Fast T2-weighted MR imaging: impact of variation in pulse sequence parameters on image quality and artifacts.

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate in a phantom model the practical impact of alteration of key imaging parameters on image quality and artifacts for the most commonly used fast T(2)-weighted MR sequences. These include fast spin-echo (FSE), single shot fast spin-echo (SSFSE), and spin-echo echo-planar imaging (EPI) pulse sequences. We developed a composite phantom with different T1 and T2 values, which was evaluated while stationary as well as during periodic motion. Experiments involved controlled variations in key parameters including effective TE, TR, echo spacing (ES

In vivo B0 field shimming methods for MRI at 7T.

Functional MRI (fMRI) at 7T and above provides improved Signal-to-Noise Ratio and Contrast-to-Noise Ratio compared to 3T acquisitions. In addition to the beneficial effects on spin polarization and magnetization of deoxyhemoglobin, the increased applied field also further magnetizes air and tissue. While the magnets themselves typically provide a static B0 field with sufficient spatial homogeneity, the diamagnetism of tissue and the paramagnetism of air causes local field deviations inside the human head. These spatially-varying field offsets (ΔB0) cause image artifacts, especially in single s
