Network analysis of ecological momentary assessment identifies frustration as a central node in irritability.

BACKGROUND: Irritability presents transdiagnostically, commonly occurring with anxiety and other mood symptoms. However, little is known about the temporal and dynamic interplay among irritability-related clinical phenomena. Using a novel network analytic approach with smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA), we examined how irritability and other anxiety and mood symptoms were connected. METHODS: Sample included 152 youth ages 8-18 years (M ± SD = 12.28 ± 2.53; 69.74% male; 65.79% White) across several diagnostic groups enriched for irritability including disruptive mood dysre

The Daily Experience of Subjective Tinnitus: Ecological Momentary Assessment Versus End-of-Day Diary.

OBJECTIVE: Traditional methods of self-report assessments are susceptible to bias (i.e., memory, recall, and recency). Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) may curb these biases by repeated momentary assessment of the participant throughout the day. High costs and participant burden may, however, impede the use of EMA. End-of-day diary (EDD) provides an attractive alternative to EMA, though no direct comparison has been performed in the tinnitus field. DESIGN: Four thousand seven-hundred thirty-two data entries were collected from nine participants undergoing cognitive behavioral treatment f

Tobacco advertising exposure and product use among young adults: An ecological momentary assessment approach.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco-related content is prevalent on social media, yet many methods of measuring exposure are inadequate due to the personalized nature of online marketing. The purpose of this paper is to examine the association between exposure to pro-tobacco messages (both industry-sponsored and user-generated) and the use of tobacco products, as reported via ecological momentary assessment (EMA). METHODS: Young adults (n = 175) were instructed to record all sightings of marketing (both in-person and online) related to tobacco for 28 days. Tobacco product use and recall of message encounte

Daily-Life Fatigue in Mild to Moderate Hearing Impairment: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has indicated an association between hearing impairment (HI) and daily-life fatigue. However, the temporal and contextual correlates of such fatigue are largely unexplored. The present study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine (1) whether people with HI are more fatigued than people with normal hearing, (2) whether individuals with HI and normal hearing (NH) show similar diurnal patterns of fatigue, (3) whether people with HI spend less time in challenging listening situations compared with NH controls, and (4) whether more challenging listening

Factors Associated with Daily Completion Rates in a Smartphone-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

OBJECTIVES: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods are known to have validity for capturing momentary changes in variables over time. However, data quality relies on the completion rates, which are influenced by both participants' characteristics and study designs. This study applied an EMA method using a mobile application to assess momentary moods and stress levels in patients with Moyamoya disease to examine variables associated with EMA completion rates. METHODS: Adults with Moyamoya disease were recruited from a tertiary hospital in Seoul. Patients with cognitive impairment were e

Characterizing anger-related affect in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder using ecological momentary assessment.

This study employed secondary analyses of existing ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data to characterize hostile and irritable affect in the day-to-day experience of 52 smokers with, and 65 smokers without, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMA monitoring occurred over a mean of 8.2 days, and participants responded to an average of 2.8 random prompts/day. Analyses included Wilcoxon rank sum tests of group differences, and path analyses of cross-lagged multilevel models. Participants with PTSD endorsed a significantly higher proportion of total EMA entries indicating hostile affect and

Ecological Momentary Assessment of Illicit Drug Use Compared to Biological and Self-Reported Methods.

BACKGROUND: The use of mHealth methods for capturing illicit drug use and associated behaviors have become more widely used in research settings, yet there is little research as to how valid these methods are compared to known measures of capturing and quantifying drug use. OBJECTIVE: We examined the concordance of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of drug use to previously validated biological and audio-computer assisted self-interview (ACASI) methods. METHODS: The Exposure Assessment in Current Time (EXACT) study utilized EMA methods to assess drug use in real-time in participants' nat

Daily life hour by hour, with and without cocaine: an ecological momentary assessment study.

RATIONALE: Effects of an intervention cannot be understood without precise knowledge of the baseline behavior on which the intervention is superimposed. For misusers of illicit drugs, patterns of daily activities and moods have not been studied in a way that is amenable to statistical aggregation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare hour-by-hour daily activities in cocaine-dependent outpatients during urine-verified periods of use and abstinence. METHODS: In a cohort design, a volunteer sample of 112 methadone-maintained cocaine- and heroin-abusing outpatients provided ecological

Affective instability: measuring a core feature of borderline personality disorder with ecological momentary assessment.

Ecological momentary assessment (EMA; Stone & Shiffman, 1994) was used to characterize and quantify a dynamic process--affective instability in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Sixty outpatients (34 with BPD and affective instability; 26 with current depressive disorder but not with BPD or affective instability) carried electronic diaries for approximately 1 month and were randomly prompted to rate their mood state up to 6 times a day. Results indicated that BPD patients (a) did not report significantly different mean levels of positive or negative affect; (b) displayed significantly mor

Personality-based clusters in bulimia nervosa: differences in clinical variables and ecological momentary assessment.

The present study examined whether personality-based subgroups of bulimic individuals differed in eating disorder behavior, comorbid psychopathology, treatment history, and momentary assessments of mood and behavior. Participants completed an Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) protocol for a period of 2 weeks. Latent profile analysis on the Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology revealed 3 groupings of bulimic participants: Interpersonal-emotional, Stimulus seeking-hostile, and Low personality pathology. The personality-based groups differed in histories of mood, anxiety, substance

Validating an aphasia-accessible ecological momentary assessment for daily depressive affect: A preliminary investigation.

BACKGROUND: Up to 60% of individuals with aphasia have post-stroke depression, resulting in worse quality of life. However, extant measures of depression in aphasia are insufficient, and people with aphasia are often excluded from studies of depression due to a lack of valid assessment tools. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) involves brief, repeated surveys that capture fluctuations in the real world, and may be adapted for individuals with communication impairments. We created a novel, aphasia-accessible EMA of affective depressive symptoms and evaluated its feasibility and usability in

Compliance With Ecological Momentary Assessment Among Patients With Cancer: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer often experience substantial fluctuations in psychological states during disease management. Traditional research tools are limited in capturing these dynamic changes in real time, constraining clinicians' understanding of patients' true conditions. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) enables high-frequency, real-time data collection, providing patient-reported data with greater ecological validity. However, the effectiveness of EMA studies critically depends on patient compliance, and reported compliance rates vary widely, with a lack of systematic quantitat

Feasibility and adherence to ecological momentary assessment among community-dwelling adults with suicide risk.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has seen increasing application in mental health research. However, there is a challenge in applying EMA to assess daily suicide risk in community settings due to poor adherence to the complex protocol and high dropout rates. The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility and adherence to the EMA when monitoring the daily risk of suicide in community-dwelling adults with suicidal ideation. METHODS: This secondary analysis was based on primary data from an observational study. The study participants with suicidal ideation responded to a 28-

Validation of a transdiagnostic psychopathology ecological momentary assessment protocol in a university student sample.

Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) collects real-time data in daily life, enhancing ecological validity and reducing recall bias. An EMA questionnaire that measures symptoms and transdiagnostic factors was recently developed with network modeling purposes. This study examines this EMA protocol's (a) subjective experience (e.g., burden, item clarity, survey frequency adequacy); (b) compliance, dropout, and predictors thereof; (c) the variability of EMA items across and within participants; and (d) the relations between EMA items and baseline standardized psychopathology questionnaires. Cognition during ictal and interictal migraine phases: A pilot study using ecological momentary assessment.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate cognitive functioning during ictal and interictal phases of the migraine attack using smart-phone based ambulatory cognitive tests. BACKGROUND: Cognitive problems have been increasingly recognized as an important part of the burden of migraine. People with migraine report subjective cognitive problems more often during the ictal phase than during the interictal phase of the migraine attack. However, objective evidence of cognitive impairment during attacks is limited. To address this gap, we used smart-phones and an ecological momentary assessmen

Women's real-time pain and stress during medical abortion: An ecological momentary assessment study.

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge on women's pain and stress experiences during medical abortion is scarce and evidence mainly relies on retrospective reports, which are prone to recall bias. Hence, our objective was to study real-time self-reported pain and stress throughout the medical abortion process, their fluctuation over time, and to examine whether age, parity, gestational age, adverse childhood events (ACE), and contextual factors (e.g., analgesics intake, bleeding) were associated with pain and stress.
