Economic evaluation of a behavioral-graded activity program compared to physical therapy for patients following lumbar disc surgery.

STUDY DESIGN: An economic evaluation was conducted alongside a randomized controlled trial. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Little is known about the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral treatment options for patients following lumbar disc surgery. If the knowledge available was supported by an economic evaluation, the information could then be used to make recommendations for the implementation of cognitive-behavioral treatment in the routine of rehabilitation following lumbar disc surgery. OBJECTIVE: To examine the cost-effectiveness of a behavioral-graded activity program, which is an operan

Atom-Economic Synthesis and Morphology-Dependent Marine Biodegradation Behavior of 2‑Pyrone-4,6-Dicarboxylic Acid-Based Polyesteramide.

2-Pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDC) is a lignin-derived biometabolic intermediate that serves as a versatile monomer for the development of sustainable polymers. In the present study, a bio-based polyesteramide, P-(PDC-BiOx), was successfully synthesized via the atom-economical ring-opening polyaddition of PDC and 2,2'-bis-(2-oxazoline). The thermal, crystalline, and mechanical properties of the resulting polymer were fully characterized, revealing a completely amorphous backbone with a fracture stress of 10.34 MPa. The marine biodegradability behavior was investigated under both surface and

A series of randomized trials of behavioral economic interventions to increase racial and ethnic diversity of research participants: Rationale and design of ITERATE.

RATIONALE: Prospective clinical research studies are essential for determining the effectiveness and safety of drugs, medical devices, and healthcare delivery interventions. However, low enrollment, particularly among Black and Hispanic patients, challenges the generalizability of results and fairness of research. Leveraging insights from behavioral economics to modify the content of messages recruiting patients to join research studies may increase enrollment and representativeness of trial populations. Reprint of: Clustering of behavioral economic biases in decision-making and risk for cigarette smoking and other substance use in women and men.

BACKGROUND: Low loss aversion (LA) and high delay discounting (DD) are behavioral-economic decision-making biases that independently predict cigarette smoking and other risky substance use. Here we examine (1) whether low-LA and high-DD co-occur, (2) does co-occurrence increase the odds of current smoking and other substance use compared to only low-LA, high-DD, or neither; and (3) potential gender differences in these associations. METHOD: Data are from five studies with U.S. adults who currently smoked or never-smoked cigarettes recruited using online convenience sampling matching on gender

A tri-directional examination of adolescent personality, perceived parenting, and economic and parental adversity contexts in influencing adolescent behavioral outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent personality is consistently linked to behavioral strengths and difficulties. However, most of this work is limited in that it does not consider personality beyond the Big Five or economic or parental adversity contexts. The Tri-Directional Framework of Parent and Offspring Traits and Outcomes highlights the collective influence of personality, parenting, and context on offspring behavioral outcomes. METHODS: Parent and adolescent cross-sectional data were collected from 2019 to 2021 as part of the Parents and Children Together project in the United Kingdom. Adolescent

Is economic risk proneness in young children (Homo sapiens) driven by exploratory behavior? A comparison with capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella).

Economic risk proneness is displayed by human children and some nonhuman primate species. To explore the role of attraction toward the unknown and the unexpected in economic choices, 2.5-year-old children and capuchin monkeys were presented in Experiment 1 with a gambling task in which participants had to choose between 2 options, a secure option and a risky option characterized by an unexpected event. In contrast to capuchins, toddlers showed a strong preference for the risky option over the safe option. In Experiment 2, toddlers maintained their risky choices despite the increased salience o

Counterfactual processing of economic action-outcome alternatives in obsessive-compulsive disorder: further evidence of impaired goal-directed behavior.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder of automatic, uncontrollable behaviors and obsessive rumination. There is evidence that OCD patients have difficulties performing goal-directed actions, instead exhibiting repetitive stimulus-response habit behaviors. This might result from the excessive formation of stimulus-response habit associations or from an impairment in the ability to use outcome value to guide behavior. We investigated the latter by examining counterfactual decision making, which is the ability to use comparisons of prospective action-outcome scenarios to g

Willingness to pay for influenza vaccination among the elderly in Vietnam: A triple-bounded dichotomous choice analysis of economic and behavioral determinants.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal influenza causes significant morbidity among the elderly, yet vaccination remains an out-of-pocket expense in Vietnam. This study evaluated the willingness to pay (WTP) for influenza vaccination and its determinants among the elderly in Vietnam. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Can Tho City, Vietnam (N = 1486). We employed the Contingent Valuation Method with a Triple-Bounded Dichotomous Choice framework. Data were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression to identify predictors of WTP and interval regression to estimate the mean WT

Health, social, and economic consequences of idiopathic REM Sleep Behavior Disorder: a controlled national study evaluating societal effects.

OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (iRBD) is one of the strongest known risk markers for alpha-synuclein disorder development including Parkinson Disease (prodromal PD). We aimed to determine the socioeconomic and overall health burden for patients with iRBD, and ultimately for society. METHODS: A nationwide retrospective cohort study, based on anonymized patient data from the Danish National Patient Registry (DNPR) and other Danish registers. Patients hospital-diagnosed (ICD-10) with iRBD without Parkinson Disease (PD) between 1 January 2006 and 31 December 2018 were included.

Work-Related Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for racially and economically diverse unemployed persons with social anxiety: A randomized clinical trial.

Individuals with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) are at risk for employment problems. This multi-site trial examined the efficacy of Work-Related Cognitive Behavioral Therapy provided alongside vocational services as usual (WCBT+VSAU), a group-based treatment designed to improve mental health and employment outcomes for individuals with SAD. Vocational service-seeking participants with SAD (N = 250) were randomized to either WCBT+VSAU or VSAU-alone. Hypotheses were that participants randomized to WCBT+VSAU would report less social anxiety, less depression, and more hours worked than participants

Moral injury among women military veterans and demand for cigarettes: A behavioral economic investigation using a hypothetical purchase task.

OBJECTIVES: Unlike the United States general population, veteran women - as opposed to veteran men - have greater smoking prevalence; yet, little is known regarding factors that influence smoking in veteran women. The purpose of this study was to begin examining the relationship between a psychological concept known as moral injury and demand for cigarettes among veteran women. METHODS: Veteran women who smoke (n = 44) were recruited for this cross-sectional study from Amazon MTurk, Reddit, and a veteran-serving non-profit organization in June-July 2023. Consenting participants received $2 fo

Employment, Economic, and Sociodemographic Factors Associated with Changes in Smoking and Drinking Behaviors during the COVID-19 Pandemic in South Korea.

The societal disruptions resulting from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have caused changes in smoking and alcohol consumption. Using data from the Koreans' Happiness Survey, a nationally representative survey in South Korea, we (1) described population-level smoking and drinking behaviors; (2) assessed changes in smoking and drinking behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic; and (3) identified employment, economic, and sociodemographic factors associated with these changes using multinomial logistic regression. The overall amount of smoking and drinking decreased during the

Using behavioral economic theory to increase use of effective contraceptives among opioid-maintained women at risk of unintended pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: An unsettling aspect of the US opioid epidemic is the high rate of in utero exposure, especially since most of these pregnancies are unintended, due in part to low rates of effective contraceptive use among opioid-using women. This study tested an intervention informed by behavioral economic theory and aimed at promoting effective contraceptive use among opioid-maintained women at risk of unintended pregnancy in the Burlington, VT, area between 2011 and 2013. METHODS: Thirty-one women were assigned (initial 5 consecutively, subsequent 26 randomly) to either usual care or an experim

Predictors of co-occurring risk behavior trajectories among economically disadvantaged African-American youth: contextual and individual factors.

PURPOSE: African-American youth, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, evidence high rates of negative outcomes associated with three problem behaviors, conduct problems, risky sexual behavior, and substance use. This study used a contextually tailored version of problem behavior theory (PBT) to examine predictors of the simultaneous development of problem behaviors in this specific cultural group. METHODS: Sociocontextual and individual variables representing four PBT predictor categories, controls protection, support protection, models risk, and vulnerability risk, were examined a

Evaluation of behavioral economic strategies to raise influenza vaccination rates across a health system: Results from a randomized clinical trial.

Influenza vaccination rates are low. Working with a large US health system, we evaluated three health system-wide interventions using the electronic health record's patient portal to improve influenza vaccination rates. We performed a two-arm RCT with a nested factorial design within the treatment arm, randomizing patients to usual-care control (no portal interventions) or to one or more portal interventions. We included all patients within this health system during the 2020-2021 influenza vaccination season, which overlapped with the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the patient portal, we simultane

Effect of Dietary Microalgae (Spirulina platensis) on Growth Performance, Ingestive Behavior, Hemato-Biochemical Parameters, and Economic Efficiency of Fayoumi Broilers.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with Spirulina platensis (SP) on the productive performance, carcass characteristics, behavior, blood serum metabolites, hematological indices, and economic efficiency of Fayoumi broiler chickens for a 56-day. In total, 120 one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly distributed among four dietary treatments with three replicates (n = 10/group) for 8 weeks. The dietary treatments were a control basal diet without SP and the same basal diets supplemented with 0.25, 0.5, or 1.0% SP. Birds fed 1% Spirulina-supplemented diets

Economic Challenges and Behavioral and Mental Health Risks for Overdose during the COVID-19 Pandemic among People Who Inject Drugs.

People who inject drugs (PWID) are a population that disproportionately struggles with economic and mental health challenges. However, despite numerous reports of people globally experiencing new or exacerbated economic and/or mental health challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, the literature on the effect of the pandemic on PWID and their risk for harm (e.g., overdose) remains sparse. The present study will describe reported changes during the pandemic in risk factors for drug overdose (including changes in mental health symptoms and care access) among PWID in Chicago, and it will examine

Health, social, and economic consequences of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder: a controlled national study evaluating societal effects.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease (PD) causes significant socioeconomic burdens. One of the strongest predictors of PD is rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD; when there is no known other cause of RBD, referred to as idiopathic RBD [iRBD]), but there is no information about its factual welfare burden. We estimated the direct and indirect total costs of iRBD in a national sample of patients, based on a national register-based cohort study with matched controls. METHODS: Using records from the Danish National Patient Registry, patient's diagnosis with RBD from 2006 to 2016

The Habit Formation trial of behavioral economic interventions to improve statin use and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease: Rationale, design and methodologies.

BACKGROUND: Low adherence to statin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) medication is common. Here, we report on the design and implementation of the Habit Formation trial. This clinical trial assessed whether the interventions, based on principles from behavioral economics, might improve statin adherence and lipid control in at-risk populations. We describe the rationale and methods for the trial, recruitment, conduct and follow-up. We also report on several barriers we encountered with recruitment and conduct of the trial, solutions we devised and efforts we will make to assess their impact on ou
