[Delay in progression of dependency and need of care of dementia patients treated with Ginkgo special extract EGb 761].

In studies on the efficacy of antidementia drugs, a delay in symptom progression was often postulated based on a comparison of the change upon treatment and an assumed "natural" progression. Such comparisons were usually based on the cognitive subscore of the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-cog), using either the drug-placebo differences after randomized treatment or the changes upon active drug treatment in open-label extension studies. Considering quality of life, competence, cost of care, and economics of therapeutic measures, a delay in the progression of dependency and need of

Rethinking Organisational Justice in Healthcare Through Nurses' Voices: Insights From Nancy Fraser's Theory of Justice.

Organisational justice has emerged as a key area of interest given the challenges of protecting the health and well-being of nurses in healthcare organisations. Existing research shows significant conceptual and methodological limitations that must be addressed to achieve a more comprehensive and ethically grounded understanding of nurses' needs in the healthcare system. This article explores how nurses experience their working conditions within public healthcare organisations through a theoretical lens of social justice to unveil the systemic injustices embedded within them. Adopting a critic

Systemic and political determinants of the global nursing and midwifery shortages: A discussion based on human resources for health data.

BACKGROUND: Nurses and midwives constitute a substantial proportion of the global health workforce and are essential to universal health coverage, maternal and newborn health, and health-system resilience. Despite workforce expansion, persistent shortages, maldistribution, gender inequities, poor working conditions, leadership gaps, and migration pressures continue to undermine both professions. The Global Burden of Disease 1990-2023 Human Resources for Health estimates provide an opportunity to examine these challenges across three decades. AIM: This discussion paper reframes global nursing

Ageism toward older adults among healthcare workers and students: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Ageism, particularly against older adults, is widespread in different settings, including public policies, healthcare institutions, workplaces and media. Its pervasive presence, especially in healthcare settings, has caused a significant impact on the economics and healthcare expenses and has become a growing concern. Older adults' health outcomes are impacted by both positive and negative ageism displayed by healthcare workers and students. Although multiple reviews have studied ageism in healthcare, literature mapping the presence of both positive and negative ageism among heal

Assistants to primary physicians in California.

The mid-level practitioner movement is no longer experimental; nurse practitioners and physician's assistants in California have proved to fill a necessary and viable professional role in the delivery of primary health care. The physician's assistant law (AB2109) and the Experimental Manpower Act (AB1503) have facilitated the training and functioning of these new health care professionals; more comprehensive laws are still needed to permit optimal utilization. National agencies for approval of teaching programs and testing of individual graduates will play an increasing role in the accreditati

[Peripheral parenteral nutrition: contribution of nursing to the development, preparation and control protocols].

In the present work the role of nursing in peripheric parenteral nutrition (PPN) is described. The main role is framed within the Unit of Nutritional Support along with the design of the corresponding protocols. The outstanding difference in the composition of our PPN vs those manufactured by the pharmaceutical industry, is the inclusion of glucose as the sole source of carbohydrates. These protocols secure similar nursing care in all patients. With respect to the local venous tolerance to our PPN, it was significantly better than that found in the group infused with a commercial PPN. By contr

Feasibility of a physical activity programme embedded into the daily lives of older adults living in nursing homes: protocol for a randomised controlled pilot feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults living in nursing homes spend the majority of their time inactive. The associated levels of chronic disease place an increasing burden on healthcare systems. Physical activity (PA) interventions delivered through exercise classes may be resource-intensive and require specialist staff. The aim of this study is to explore the feasibility and acceptability of a PA programme embedded into the daily lives of older adults living in nursing homes and to examine the preliminary effects of this on physical mobility and quality of life. METHODS: A randomised controlled pilot fe

Educational preparation for maternal, child and family health nurses in Australia.

AIM: The study aims to map and critique the current postgraduate educational nursing programmes offered to nurses and midwives in maternal, child and family health in Australia. BACKGROUND: Nursing specialties that focus on the early years of child health and development are based on international recognition of the developmental needs of the growing infant and of the social, health and economic consequences of failing to support families to raise their children in optimal environments. Little is known whether the educational programmes that prepare maternal, child and family health nurses (M

Modeling the complex activity of sickle cell and thalassemia specialist nurses in England.

OBJECTIVE: Specialist advanced practice nursing in hemoglobinopathies has a rich historical and descriptive literature. Subsequent work has shown that the role is valued by patients and families and also by other professionals. However, there is little empirical research on the complexity of activity of these services in terms of interventions offered. In addition, the work of clinical nurse specialists in England has been devalued through a perception of oversimplification. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand the complexity of expert nursing practice in sickle cell and thala
