Silent Alarms? Unveiling Destabilization Risk in Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon Fluxes.

Ecosystems are increasingly exposed to the pressures of global change, with climate emerging as one of the most influential drivers. However, the mechanisms leading to increased ecosystem destabilization risk remain poorly understood. In this study, we used eddy-covariance carbon flux measurements (GPP, NEP, and Re) from 65 terrestrial ecosystems across the globe, including forests, shrublands, and grasslands from boreal, temperate and Mediterranean biomes to investigate early warning signals of destabilization by analyzing indicators of critical slowing down (trends in lag-1 temporal autocorr

A Miswired Ovarian Ecosystem: LIF/JAK/STAT3 Distortion in PCOS.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex reproductive and metabolic disorder characterized by hyperandrogenism, anovulation, insulin resistance, and chronic low-grade inflammation. The LIF/JAK/STAT3 pathway is very important for coordinating folliculogenesis, endometrial receptivity, and metabolic homeostasis. The LIF-LIFR-gp130-JAK1-STAT3 signaling pathway supports the survival of granulosa cells, follicle recruitment, ovulation, implantation, and mitochondrial function under physiological conditions. In polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hyperandrogenism, hyperinsulinemia, and pro-inflam

Endogenous Plant Nitrous Oxide Formation: Evidence, Mechanisms and Ecosystem Implications.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas and a major ozone-depleting substance of the nitrogen cycle. While global N2O budgets focus on microbial soil sources, evidence suggests that living plants can also contribute to N2O emissions. However, the origin of plant-associated N2O fluxes is contested: measured emissions may arise from endogenous plant metabolism or merely from transport of soil-derived N2O. In this review, we clarify these pathways and synthesize current findings from laboratory and field studies. Experimental evidence from 15N-tracer and axenic-culture studies supports N2O

American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) as wetland ecosystem carbon stock regulators.

Blue carbon refers to organic carbon sequestered by oceanic and coastal ecosystems. This stock has gained global attention as a high organic carbon repository relative to other ecosystems. Within blue carbon ecosystems, tidally influenced wetlands alone store a disproportionately higher amount of organic carbon than other blue carbon systems. North America harbors 42% of tidally influenced global wetland area, which has been identified as a critical carbon stock in the context of climate change mitigation. However, quantified associations between vertebrate biota and carbon sequestration withi

Field-scale evaluation of ecosystem service benefits of bioenergy switchgrass.

Purpose-grown perennial herbaceous species are nonfood crops specifically cultivated for bioenergy production and have the potential to secure bioenergy feedstock resources while enhancing ecosystem services. This study assessed soil greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 and N2O), nitrate (NO3-N) leaching reduction potential, evapotranspiration (ET), and water-use efficiency (WUE) of bioenergy switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) in comparison to corn (Zea mays L.). The study was conducted on field-scale plots in Urbana, IL, during the 2020-2022 growing seasons. Switchgrass was established in 2020 and ur

Lightweight Multimodal Fusion for Urban Tree Health and Ecosystem Services.

Rapid urban expansion has heightened the demand for accurate, scalable, and real-time methods to assess tree health and the provision of ecosystem services. Urban trees are the major contributors to air-quality improvement and climate change mitigation; however, their monitoring is mostly constrained to inherently subjective and inefficient manual inspections. In order to break this barrier, we put forward a lightweight multimodal deep-learning framework that fuses RGB imagery with environmental and biometric sensor data for a combined evaluation of tree-health condition as well as the estimat

Building a healthy mouse model ecosystem to interrogate cancer biology.

In a recent study, Sargent et al. characterise several novel Rag1-/- mouse strains and demonstrate that genetic background strongly influences xenograft development and phenotype. Here, we discuss this work within the broader context of cancer mouse modelling. We argue that new technologies will enable insights into how specific models align with human disease states and that this knowledge can be used to develop a diverse ecosystem of complementary mouse models of cancer. By utilising these diverse, well-characterised models to provide multiple perspectives on specific cancers, it should be p

Single-Cell Transcriptome Comparison of Bladder Cancer Reveals Its Ecosystem.

Bladder carcinoma (BLCA) is a highly heterogeneous disease, and the underlying biological behavior is still poorly understood. Here, single-cell RNA sequencing was performed on four clinical samples of different grades from three patients, and 26,792 cell transcriptomes were obtained revealing different tumor ecosystems. We found that N-glycan biosynthesis pathway was activated in high-grade tumor, but TNF-related pathway was activated in cystitis glandularis. The tumor microenvironment (TME) of different samples showed great heterogeneity. Notably, cystitis glandularis was dominated by T cell

Abiotic gas formation drives nitrogen loss from a desert ecosystem.

In arid environments such as deserts, nitrogen is often the most limiting nutrient for biological activity. The majority of the ecosystem nitrogen flux is typically thought to be driven by production and loss of reactive nitrogen species by microorganisms in the soil. We found that high soil-surface temperatures (greater than 50 degrees C), driven by solar radiation, are the primary cause of nitrogen loss in Mojave Desert soils. This abiotic pathway not only enables the balancing of arid ecosystem nitrogen budgets, but also changes our view of global nitrogen cycling and the predicted impact o

Integrating long-term biodiversity change into biodiversity-ecosystem functioning studies.

Biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) experiments seek to improve predictions of how biodiversity change affects ecosystem functioning. Bridging biodiversity change research with BEF experiments can accelerate these efforts. Diverse observational and experimental approaches for detecting and attributing biodiversity changes offer opportunities to re-analyze data from existing BEF experiments and design new ones. This integration helps us examine the effects of all biodiversity-change scenarios-species loss, gain, and turnover. We propose a mechanistic framework for experiments that manipula

NASA's ECOSTRESS satellite reveals widespread midday depression in ecosystem evapotranspiration.

Plants often exhibit a midday depression in water use (i.e., transpiration), reflecting a constraint on their ability to sustain maximum water transport, which may occur at the cost of reduced photosynthesis. Eddy covariance observations and geostationary satellites cannot quantify this widespread phenomenon globally while resolving fine-scale spatial variability. Using evapotranspiration measurements from the ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) and machine learning, we quantify the global distribution of midday depression in evapotranspiration. Midd

Subterranean environments contribute to three-quarters of classified ecosystem services.

Beneath the Earth's surface lies a network of interconnected caves, voids, and systems of fissures forming in rocks of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic origin. Although largely inaccessible to humans, this hidden realm supports and regulates services critical to ecological health and human well-being. Subterranean ecosystems are integral to major biogeochemical cycles, sustain diverse surface habitats, and serve as the primary source of irrigation and drinking water. They also offer non-material benefits, including scientific discovery, education, and cultural practices. Yet, these contrib

Steering the microbial ecosystem: how ethanol boosts coalbed methane output.

Microbial-enhanced coalbed methane (MECBM) technology is considered a key approach to increasing CBM yields. However, the biogenic conversion of coal to methane is limited by coal’s recalcitrant macromolecular structure, which constrains production. Therefore, enhancing microbial degradation efficiency is critical for improving CBM yields. To elucidate the mechanism through which ethanol enhances coal biodegradation and methanogenesis, this study employed an integrated approach combining 13C-stable isotope tracing with multi-omics analyses. This strategy enabled investigation of the bioconvers

Leaf phenology affects wood anatomy in an ecosystem warming experiment.

Leaf phenology may influence the development of wood structure and hydraulic function across growing seasons, yet the roles of green-up, green-down, and growing season length in regulating xylem anatomy remain unclear. We quantified annual wood anatomy, leaf phenology, and growth in a whole-ecosystem experiment with 5 warming levels (up to +9 °C) and 2 CO2 levels (ambient and +500 ppm) in Picea mariana (conservative spruce) and Larix laricina (acquisitive larch). We identified a phenology-tracheid-growth spectrum, reflecting a trade-off between hydraulic safety (thicker walls, higher tracheid

Soil Moisture Thresholds for the Temperature Sensitivity of Ecosystem Respiration.

Ecosystem respiration (ER) is the largest source of biogenic CO2 to the atmosphere, and its temperature sensitivity (Q10) before reaching maximum values is crucial for understanding land-climate feedback. However, despite decades of studies showing that Q10 varies considerably across space, time, and biomes, the mechanisms underlying this variability remain unresolved. Here we demonstrate that global variation in Q10 can be reconciled within a unified hydrothermal framework. Using data from 142 eddy covariance sites around the world, we show that Q10 exhibits unimodal responses to soil moistur

Microbiome assembly statistics toward ecosystem-scale insights, forecasting, and management.

Microbiomes are increasingly recognized as key to addressing global challenges in health and sustainability, as they can provide emergent biological functions unattainable with single microbial species. However, microbial communities occasionally undergo abrupt shifts in species composition despite their intrinsic steadiness, making it difficult to maintain highly functional microbiome states. Here, we outline emerging statistical frameworks that integrate ecological stability theory with empirical analyses of microbiome structure and function. Approaches inspired by the concept of "stability

Wetlands and warfare - implications for hydrologic and biogeochemical ecosystem functions.

Wetlands deliver unique hydrologic and biogeochemical functions, including floodwater detention, wave energy attenuation, and the retention and transformation of elements and compounds. The concept of warfare ecology provides a framework to evaluate ecosystem functions throughout wars three cyclical phases (i.e., preparation, active conflict, and rebuilding). Little research focuses on warfare's implications for wetland functions, and most available literature targets wildlife habitat effects. In response, this synthesis examines wetland hydrologic and biogeochemical functional responses to wa
