Development of ectodermal and endodermal taste buds.

The sense of taste is mediated primarily by taste buds on the tongue. These multicellular sensory organs are induced, patterned and become innervated during embryogenesis such that a functional taste system is present at birth when animals begin to feed. While taste buds have been considered ectodermal appendages, this is only partly accurate as only fungiform taste buds in the anterior tongue arise from the ectoderm. Taste buds found in the posterior tongue actually derive from endoderm. Nonetheless, both anterior and posterior buds are functionally similar, despite their disparate embryonic

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a rare heterogeneous genetic congenital disorder affecting at least 1 in 5000-10,000 newborns. This disorder has a wide range of clinical manifestations; it affects organs originating from the embryonic ectoderm. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 2-year-old boy diagnosed with HED, the boy was suffering from absence of sweating since birth, dry skin, recurrent episodes of hyperpyrexia, sparse and light-colored hair on the scalp, absent eyebrows, and delayed eruption of abnormally shaped teeth. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: The are no diagn

Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia: A Case Report.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the developmental disturbance of ectoderm-derived tissues, organs, and accessory appendages, i.e. skin, hair, tooth, nail, and sweat glands. ED has two types hypohidrotic or anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. We report this case of classical hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) with clubbing. The association of clubbing with HED is still rare. This case report aims to discuss the etiology, clinical manifestations, and management of ectodermal dysplasia. A multidisciplinary approach is required

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: A rare entity.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a genetic disorder which involves a complex group of inherited conditions. This condition is characterised by the failed development of two or more ectodermal derived anatomic structure; for example, the skin, hair, nails, teeth, and sweat glands. It is a phenotypically heterogenous group of illnesses including anodontia with conical teeth, generalised spacing, reduced ability to sweat, very less hair growth, etc. The pattern of inheritance of HED varies from person to person depending on the type of ectodermal dysplasia (ED). The patterns include X-l

LEF1 haploinsufficiency causes ectodermal dysplasia.

Ectodermal dysplasias are a family of genodermatoses commonly associated with variants in the ectodysplasin/NF-κB or the Wnt/β-catenin pathways. Both pathways are involved in signal transduction from ectoderm to mesenchyme during the development of ectoderm-derived structures. Wnt/β-catenin pathway requires the lymphoid enhancer-binding factor 1 (LEF1), a nuclear mediator, to activate target gene expression. In mice, targeted inactivation of the LEF1 gene results in a complete block of development of multiple ectodermal appendages. We report two unrelated patients with 4q25 de novo deletion en

Ectodermal dysplasia - A rare case report.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a rare genetic disease caused by developmental disturbances of embryonic ectoderm derived tissues, organs, and other accessory appendages. The congenital missing of teeth is usually bilateral. Anodontia or hypodontia may be associated with other ectodermal disturbances, such as anhidrosis, asteatosis, hypotrichosis, and salivary glands defects. One such case report of ED is demonstrated here.

Orodental manifestations in ectodermal dysplasia-a review.

Oral signs and symptoms are present in most ectodermal dysplasias (EDs). The aim of this article is to summarize some of the literature on current knowledge of oral manifestations and orofacial function in EDs. The review will focus on the most common forms where dental manifestations can be crucial for a differential diagnosis of ED among individuals with hypodontia and oligodontia, and preferably where the investigations included persons who had a genetically verified diagnosis. Disturbances in tooth development are common and can appear as tooth agenesis, variations in size and shape of tee

Late diagnosis of ectodermal dysplasia syndrome.

This case study reports the clinical, skin biopsy and molecular findings in a 56-year-old Filipino man with the autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia disorder, Schöpf-Schulz-Passarge syndrome, the precise nature of which was established only after reading of a similar case in this journal. In addition to the late diagnosis, successful clinical management of his acral hyperkeratosis and ulceration has been difficult, with oral retinoids exacerbating the skin fragility.

Orofacial features of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a type of genodermatosis characterized by the abnormal development of sweat glands, teeth, and hair. The most prevalent form of HED is X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED), which is associated with mutations in the EDA gene. The aim of this case report was to describe a family with XLHED with emphasis on differences in orofacial features between members. Family members were systematically evaluated to characterize the pattern of inheritance and clinical features. Dental examination included evaluation of agenesis and abnormal teeth struc

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: a multidisciplinary approach.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED; Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome) is a genetic disorder characterized by sparse hair, oligodontia with peg-shaped teeth, reduced sweating, and defects in a number of other ectodermal organs. A partial or complete absence of eccrine glands can lead to recurrent severe overheating that may cause seizures and neurological deficits. This clinical report presents a 14-year-old male patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, including the clinical and radiographic findings, and multidisciplinary treatment. Ectodermal dysplasia-skin fragility syndrome.

Ectodermal dysplasia-skin fragility (EDSF) syndrome is a rare and first described inherited disorder of desmosomes. It occurs due to loss-of-function mutations in PKP1 gene resulting in poorly formed desmosomes and loss of desmosomal and epidermal integrity. We report a case of a 2-year-old Indian male child who presented with palmoplantar hyperkeratosis with fissuring, short, sparse, and easily pluckable scalp hair, nail dystrophy, and multiple erosions over the skin. Skin biopsy showed epidermal hyperplasia with widening of intercellular spaces. His developmental milestones were delayed but

Interdisciplinary management of patients with ectodermal dysplasia.

A 15-year-old girl with ectodermal dysplasia who had been treated previously with minimal orthodontic intervention and removal prosthesis was seen and evaluated at the General Practice Program at the University of Kentucky. After consultations with orthodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery, an interdisciplinary staged treatment plan was developed to address her skeletal and dental issues. The authors briefly review the literature with respect to current therapy for patients with ectodermal dysplasia and present the case as an example of the coordinated care provided for a patient with co

Ectodermal dysplasia-skin fragility syndrome.

Pathogenic mutations have now been described in ten different desmosomal proteins: plakophilin 1 (PKP1) and 2 (PKP2); desmoplakin; plakoglobin; desmoglein 1, 2, and 4; desmocollin 2, and 3 corneodesmosin. Nevertheless, the first report of an inherited desmosomal gene disorder, published in 1997, involved loss-of-function mutations on both alleles of PKP1, the PKP1 gene. Loss of PKP1 expression in human skin leads to skin erosions and crusting, notably with perioral fissuring as well as palmoplantar hyperkeratosis with painful cracking of the skin. Other more variable features include abnormali

Classifying functional manifestations of ectodermal dysplasias.

Ectodermal dysplasias (ED) encompass more than 200 conditions involving some combination of disorders of hair, nails, teeth, and sweat glands. The incidence of ED is relatively rare affecting about 7 of 10,000 births [Itin and Fistarol (2004)]. Individuals manifesting ED present with a wide range of disorders involving hair, nails, teeth, and sweat glands and in many cases other characteristics as well. The complex nature of the disorder has presented challenges for clinical practice and required the involvement of multiple approaches and disciplines. It has also resulted in significant resear

[ENT expression of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia].

Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia (HED) is a rare recesive genetic disease linked to chromosome X whose main characteristic is the reduction of sweat glands, leading to a deficient sweating and an increase in body temperature. In HED mainly the ectodermal structures are involved such, as epidermis and its anexes (hair and nails), although non-ectodermal tissue may also become involved. Otolaryngologicalmanifestations are related to hypoplasia of the mucous glands of the upper aerodigestive tract, as chronic infections, like rhinitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis and otitis, and also epistaxis, dysp
