Promising roles for pharmacists in addressing the U.S. opioid crisis.

Overdoses of prescription or illicit opioids claimed the lives of 116 Americans each day in 2016, and the crisis continues to escalate. As healthcare systems evolve to address the crisis, the potential of pharmacists to make a positive difference is significant. In addition to utilizing available prescription drug monitoring programs to help prevent diversion of opioids, practicing pharmacists can be alert for signs of opioid misuse by patients (e.g., multiple prescriptions from different physicians) as well as inappropriate prescribing or hazardous drug combinations that physicians may not be

Addressing buprenorphine bottlenecks in the context of MAT Act implementation: A shared responsibility.

Medications for opioid use disorder (OUD) such as buprenorphine reduce overdose mortality and other opioid related acute health events but have historically been highly regulated. The recent Mainstreaming Addiction Treatment (MAT) Act ended the requirement clinicians complete a specified training and apply for a DATA 2000 ("X") waiver on their Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number, to prescribe buprenorphine. With the MAT Act, any practitioner with Schedule III prescribing authority (a regular DEA number) can now prescribe buprenorphine for OUD. While this has potential to improve OUD t

A short-duration telementoring pain management programme for Medicaid: impact on clinician outcomes.

Previous evaluations of the pain care-related Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) telementoring programmes found that long-term programmes (16-52 weeks) improve clinician knowledge, self-efficacy, and prescribing practices. We evaluated a 6- to 7-week Pain Management ECHO in Nevada Medicaid clinician networks. We collected pre- and post-knowledge and self-efficacy scores from 15 of 18 unique ECHO participants (83% response rate). We derived opioid prescribing outcomes from 44 894 Medicaid pharmacy claims records from 11 ECHO participants and 10 comparison clinicians. The three o

Community pharmacist interventions in ear health: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, around 3.6 million people suffer from hearing loss, more than 1.3 million with preventable hearing conditions. Ear diseases are prevalent in Indigenous populations, particularly children and are associated with poor educational outcomes and subsequent high rates of unemployment and incarceration. In Australia, rural and remote communities have rates of middle ear perforations five times the rate that the World Health Organisation regards to be a significant public health problem.Barriers to accessing ear health services have been identified including gaps in testing d

Effect of an audiovisual message for tetanus booster vaccination broadcast in the waiting room.

BACKGROUND: General practitioners (GPs) often lack time and resources to invest in health education; audiovisual messages broadcast in the waiting room may be a useful educational tool. This work was designed to assess the effect of a message inviting patients to ask for a tetanus booster vaccination. METHODS: A quasi experimental study was conducted in a Belgian medical practice consisting of 6 GPs and 4 waiting rooms (total: 20,000 contacts/year). A tetanus booster vaccination audiovisual message was continuously broadcast for 6 months in 2 randomly selected waiting rooms (intervention grou

From classroom to the counter: exploring knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward Down syndrome among pharmacy students and pharmacists.

BACKGROUND: The worldwide prevalence of Down syndrome (DS) is increasing. Limited DS-specific information and dosing guidelines can hinder pharmacists' ability to effectively respond to DS related inquiries. As accessible healthcare providers, pharmacists are well positioned to identify and address these challenges, yet their role in optimizing DS care remains underexplored. This study aimed at evaluating community pharmacists' knowledge, confidence, and practices related to DS pharmacotherapy, and to identify training needs that can improve their role in optimizing medication management for i

The future of pain pharmacy: driven by need.

BACKGROUND: Opioid prescribing has increased by ~400% over the past 20 years in the US and has been correlated with dramatic increases in accidental overdose-related deaths. Emerging evidence of serious dose-dependent side effects of opioid analgesics has led to recommendations from multinational pain societies and governments to decrease opioid doses and increase referrals to pain specialists. Demand for pain specialists of all types has increased; however, training programs for health care professionals struggle to satisfy this need. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to highlight th

Medical abortion can be provided safely and effectively by pharmacy workers trained within a harm reduction framework: Nepal.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the treatment efficacy, safety and satisfaction of women using medical abortion (MA) pills provided by pharmacists following an education intervention based on a harm reduction approach. Development of a capstone exam as pre-advanced pharmacy practice experiences domains assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education's (ACPE) standards require pharmacy schools to assess Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) readiness. This paper describes the development and implementation of a Capstone Exam for assessing APPE-readiness and exploration of potential correlations between student performance on the Exam and performance measures within the didactic curriculum. METHODS: Faculty developed a Capstone examination aligned to the Pre-APPE Domains in Appendix A of the ACPE standards consisting of five stations assessing skills, which include: intervie

Utilizing desirable difficulties for sterile compounding training in a skills-based laboratory course.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sterile compounding skills are essential components of a professional pharmacy curriculum. The theory of desirable difficulties has been used to facilitate deeper learning of material in other disciplines, but has not been described in pharmacy sterile compounding instruction. The purpose of this work was to evaluate whether challenges introduced in sterile compounding would act as desirable difficulties and result in greater student confidence in their sterile compounding competency. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY AND SETTING: Students in the fourth semester of Pharmacy Skills

The knowledge and attitudes of pharmacists related to the use of dietary supplements: An observational study in northeastern Italy.

Inappropriate use of dietary supplements can be potentially harmful to patients, especially given the uncontrolled information on the Internet and social media. The role that pharmacists play in advising citizens and purchasing these products can help improve their safer use, but the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of these professionals on this topic are still largely unknown. Pharmacists in the Italian Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia (FVG) were surveyed from September 2020 to February 2021 using a 54-item online questionnaire. The questions were related to knowledge, attitudes, and pract
