Validity assessment for veterinary use of human laparoscopic cholecystectomy training models.

OBJECTIVE: To assess validity evidence of 2 commercially available human gallbladder models for canine laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LapChole) training. We hypothesized that both models would display construct validity and would render high face values. The physical model was hypothesized to have higher face validity and the virtual reality (VR) model higher construct validity. METHODS: Experimental study. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy-experienced American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) diplomates and novice surgeons were enrolled. Surgical performance was assessed using a physical mode

Development and evaluation of a gelatin-based phantom model for veterinary diagnostic imaging training.

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based training enhances the competency of veterinarians and veterinary students in diagnostic imaging, with phantoms serving as ethical alternatives to the use of animal tissues. However, in many developing countries, the high cost of commercial phantoms limits their accessibility. AIM: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a low-cost, gelatin-based phantom as an alternative model for veterinary training. METHODS: In this study, we developed and evaluated a low-cost phantom using animal-based gelatin in the form of "ballistic gel" with or without 10% buffered normal

Effects of embedded acceptance and commitment training in veterinary medical and technology programs as students transition into the workforce: A study protocol.

Psychological distress is elevated in the field of veterinary medicine. Recent evidence demonstrates that stress and burnout in veterinary workers can be reduced through an Acceptance and Commitment Training intervention targeting "burden transfer," or reactivity to challenging interactions with veterinary clients ("Unburdened"). Exposing students to Unburdened could optimize mental health outcomes as they transition into the veterinary workforce. Unburdened will be adapted for student use in a self-guided digital format and embedded into 5 veterinary medical or technology programs. Participan

Veterinary Student Skills Learned at an Access to Care Clinic: Beyond Medicine and Surgery.

Incorporating curriculum to effectively help veterinary students learn how to provide accessible quality care to all pet owners is needed. The primary aims of this study are to explore how a 2-week rotation at a veterinary medical service-learning clinic (Wisconsin Companion Animal Resources, Education, and Social Services [WisCARES]) improves (a) comfort in working with clients from diverse race and low socioeconomic (SES) backgrounds and (2) confidence in leading cases, communication skills, and providing a spectrum of care options. Students were surveyed at five time points pre-rotation: mi

Development and Validation of a Simulation Model for Collection of Canine Vaginal Samples.

Vaginal cytology is a widely used cytological technique mostly taught by observation, either through direct tutoring or videos. To the best of our knowledge, vaginal cytology simulators have never been assessed in veterinary medicine. Twenty-five undergraduate students with no prior experience in canine vaginal sampling were randomly assigned to two groups that practiced the procedure in either a simulator or a live animal. An inverted classroom design was followed. After observing a video tutorial, students practiced with the simulator/live animal for two classes. Three weeks later, they perf

[Preparation of a realistic calf model for obstetrical instruction].

Construction of a largely realistic and flexible calf-dummy for the instruction and practice of veterinary obstetrical procedures is described. The most important steps are presented in detail and illustrated by means of figures. The fundamental materials include: threaded rods, artificial metal joints, hard foam with a coating of soft foam rubber for neck and trunk, a flexible metal tube filled with silicone to imitate the vertebral column and silicone acetate injected into moulds to form the limb segments and the head. The natural skin, which had been specially tanned in order to retain its

Evaluation of Factors Contributing to Veterinary Student Anxiety Prior to Instructional Surgery Laboratories.

Understanding factors contributing to veterinary student anxiety prior to instructional laboratories is important for mitigating those stressors and improving student education. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between student anxiety prior to surgery and demographic and societal variables before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that increased county COVID-19 cases would increase anxiety, and experience level would have no impact. Students were enrolled in this study in 2019 (n = 87), 2021 (n = 84), and 2022 (n = 96). Participants completed a demographic quest

Improving Veterinary Students' Interest and Engagement During Anatomy Dissection Sessions: Approaches Related to Flow Theory.

A strong foundational understanding of anatomy is central to veterinary education. It is essential for acquiring clinical, surgical, and diagnostic skills in veterinary students. Veterinary anatomy is delivered by didactic lectures and laboratory dissection; however, maintaining student engagement during dissection can be challenging. This article outlines some pedagogical approaches that, if applied in a canine and feline anatomy course, could enhance student engagement and effective learning. Approaches that may be adopted include the provision of pre-matriculation materials on basic anatomi

Epidemiological Associations between Rabies Vaccination and Dog Owner Characteristics.

BACKGROUND: The annual rabies vaccination coverage in dogs among 47 prefectures in Japan has been reported to range from 42.3% to 92.4%, and the overall coverage has been steadily declining. Given the presence of unregistered dogs and the small number of stray dogs, the true vaccination coverage is likely to be even lower. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of dog owners to identify the owner characteristics associated with dog rabies vaccination. People in Japan who currently own dogs were recruited and answered a questionnaire consisting of four sections: (i) demographic charact

Veterinary Forensic Pathology: The Search for Truth.

Veterinary forensic pathology is emerging as a distinct discipline, and this special issue is a major step forward in establishing the scientific basis of the discipline. A forensic necropsy uses the same skill set needed for investigations of natural disease, but the analytical framework and purpose of forensic pathology differ significantly. The requirement of legal credibility and all that it entails distinguishes the forensic from routine diagnostic cases. Despite the extraordinary depth and breadth of knowledge afforded by their training, almost 75% of veterinary pathologists report that

Four legs or two: up front with you--preventing tragedies by keeping children and pets out of the cargo areas of pickup trucks.

Dogs and children riding in the cargo area of pickup trucks are common sights on our nation's highways, country roads, and small town streets. This scene brings to mind idyllic childhoods filled with summer days spent bouncing down roads in the back of grandpa's pickup truck, wind catching the laughter from children's throats. For hundreds of families each year, this activity is the cause of heartache, traumatic injuries, and senseless deaths. More than 200 people die each year, half of whom are younger than 18 years of age, as a direct result of falls from cargo areas of pickup trucks. Injuri

An overview of the roles and structure of international high-security veterinary laboratories for infectious animal diseases.

The unique structure, role and operations of government high-security (HS) laboratories which work on animal diseases are described, with particular reference to the laboratories of nine countries. High-security laboratories provide cost-effective insurance against catastrophic losses which could occur following exotic disease outbreaks. The importance of these laboratories is reflected in the fact that several new laboratories have recently been constructed at considerable expense and older facilities have undergone major renovations. Biosecurity is fundamental to the operation of high-securi

Wildlife, people and development: veterinary contributions to wildlife health and resource management in Africa.

Human population pressures, habitat loss, environmental degradation and illegal hunting in Africa have resulted in the loss of biodiversity and near extinction of certain wildlife species. The dilemma for Africa is the balancing of conservation and development. If wildlife is not to become a relic of the past then it must have more than just aesthetic value. It must contribute materially to the well being of people who live close to the resource. In fact, appropriate management of biodiversity would lay the foundations for a more positive future for the rural people of Africa, with the key bei

A Practical Approach to a Realistic Problem: Rapid Blueprinting a Progress Test for Veterinary Medicine in North America.

A blueprint is a template for an assessment that outlines the knowledge, skills, attributes, species, and systems to be assessed and the respective weightings (percentage of the assessment) for the key content areas. This is a foundational step in building content validity for an assessment method. The rapid blueprinting process is reported to be a quick and cost-effective approach to developing a blueprint that consists of two phases. The first is an in-person advisory committee meeting consisting of educational experts and key stakeholders (10-15 people) to build the framework of the assessm
