We begin this article by examining the role of intellectual disabilities within child psychiatry, highlighting the relatively steady role of disabilities and the recent movement to examine behavior in specific genetic syndromes. We next propose five questions for future work. Questions relate to (1) specifying the nature of gene-brain-behavior connections; (2) delineating environmental effects and gene-environment interactions; (3) understanding behaviors, physical characteristics, health issues, and other personal characteristics by which children with intellectual disabilities influence othe

A procedure to effectively and efficiently train moderately and severely retarded individuals to make fine visual discriminations is described. Results suggest that expectancies for such individuals are in need of examination. Implications for sheltered workshops, work activity centers and classrooms are discussed.

Effects of MA and CA on everyday leisure-time behaviors of children with mild and moderate mental retardation were examined by comparing 40 children with mental retardation to groups of 40 MA- and 40 CA-matched children without mental retardation on an adult-reported scale. Child's overall score, highest single behavior performed by the child, and highest behavior not performed because it was considered below the child's level were measured. Children with retardation performed most similarly to their MA-matches and well-below levels of CA-matches. Older children received higher scores in all g

The use of imagery practice to facilitate the preparation of adolescents with mild mental retardation to perform a motor task was explored. Thirty-two subjects with mental retardation and an equal number of subjects without retardation performed a response-type task that included reaction time (RT) and movement time (MT) components. Catch trials were used to manipulate the preparation levels of several experimental groups. Results suggest that with marked preparation decrements, imagery practice facilitated the execution of the RT component. Under certain conditions imagery practice also helpe

Recently, the suspension from school of handicapped students has generated considerable media attention, but very little is known about incidence of suspension and categories of precipitating offenses. Incidence was determined by drawing a random sample of 241 EMR students and selecting 241 nonretarded students who matched the EMR students on sex, race, school attended, and eligibility for free or reduced price lunch. Results showed that EMR students were no more likely to be suspended than were nonretarded students. A second group of 100 suspended EMR students was compared with an equal numbe

Repair behaviors (a speaker's attempts to make a message understood when the listener indicates a breakdown in communication has occurred) of children with and without mental retardation, ages 8 to 13, were compared as they responded to stacked sequences of requests for clarification (the child's response to a request for clarification is followed by a second and then a third request for clarification). A picture description task with a barrier between the child and examiner was the repair-evoking context. Significant differences were observed in the use of repairs by the two groups. Children

The paper treats of the data concerned with the clinical picture of mental retardation in children from so-called incomplete families. It is noted that as regards a number of parameters, the children of the group under study occupy an intermediate place between children from incomplete families and orphans whereas as to the other parameters, they correspond with orphans or, on the contrary, do not differ from complete family children. The author also demonstrates the role played by the other unfavourable family conditions in the formation of both the intellectual defect and aggravating symptom

Forty-four retarded adolescents varying in MA, IQ, and etiology were taught one of three active rehearsal strategies or assigned to a control condition. Immediate, short-term (1 day), and long-term (2 weeks) transfer of the strategy was assessed by presenting new 9-item serial lists on each day. Exposure durations, which indicated the rate of subject-pacing, showed that the two highest MA-IQ (mean IQ = 55) groups, one diagnosed as organically impaired and the other as cultural-familially retarded, successfully transferred their strategies over three sessions, while no transfer occurred in the

The rates and durations of stereotypic behaviors in four adolescents with severe mental retardation were measured during two daily vocational training sessions and during contiguous periods of leisure in their special education classrooms. Vocational training was conducted in two different tasks, alternating across days. The task requirements for each participant were matched to each participant's learning and performance characteristics. The participants were exposed to a fixed ratio schedule of tokens exchangeable for food items on one task and to a variable interval schedule for the same co

The effects of task size on rate of responding and on-task behavior as well as on nontask-related behaviors of students with autism and mental retardation on a repetitive task under conditions of no reinforcement for responding was analyzed. Task size, defined as the presence of either 36 or 250 beads in a container at the onset of the session, was compared in an alternating treatment design. The small-task condition resulted in higher on-task behavior for all participants and in higher work rate for four of the five participants. For the four participants who engaged in inappropriate use of t

The study investigated the effects of a Special Olympics (SO) Unified Sport (UNS) soccer program on anthropometry, physical fitness and soccer skills of male youth athletes with and without intellectual disabilities (ID) who participated in a training group (TRG) and in a comparison group (CG) without specific training. Youth with ID (WID) were randomly selected out of all the students between the ages 12 and 15, with a diagnosis of educable mental retardation and no secondary disabilities, who were attending a special education school. Participants without ID (WoID) were randomly selected fro

We examined the occurrence and characteristics of self-stimulatory behaviors in 10 nonhandicapped children and 5 children with developmental delays. Each child with a developmental delay was matched with two normal comparison children, one for chronological age and the other for mental age. The subjects were videotaped in four everyday settings. It was found that few differences existed between the children with developmental delays and their age-matched pairs in the percentage of time they engaged in self-stimulatory behavior, the variety of self-stimulatory behavior, how fast or slowly a beh

BACKGROUND: Stigma towards people with intellectual disability affects various aspects of their lives, including access to employment, housing, health and social care services. Furthermore, this stigma reduces their social opportunities and is even reflected in laws that diminish their autonomy. Due to the practical significance of this issue, the aim of this research is to explore for the first time the social stigma associated with intellectual disability in a representative sample of the Spanish population.
METHOD: A cross-sectional quantitative descriptive study was conducted, involving a

PURPOSE: Rett syndrome is one of several genetic disorders known to cause severe intellectual and physical disability, mostly in girls. Girls affected by Rett syndrome appear to develop normally in the first 6 months of life, after which the usual clinical presentation comprises regression of communication and hand skills, the appearance of hand stereotypies and impaired gait. Intellectual disability affects more than 1.5% of the population of children in developing countries yet we know little about the daily lives and support services available for them and their caregivers.
METHOD: This qu

The relative difficulty of understanding the logical rules of conjunction and disjunction was studied. Because rules of logic must be viewed in the context of the attributes of information to which they refer, three attribute dimensions were also investigated: (a) positive-negative, (b) quantitative-nonquantitative, and (c) concrete-abstract. A further issue relevant to this research was the effect of CA and MA on the understanding of rules of logic. Subjects included four groups, one group of children with average IQs, one learning-disability group, and two mentally handicapped groups. The le

This study addresses the need to reinforce the reading learning of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in general education classrooms. A standardized way of assessing support needs in reading (SNr) from the teachers' perspective is proposed. The objectives were (i) to develop an instrument and evaluate its properties and (ii) to preliminarily assess the support needs in reading of students with IDD. Participants were 86 Chilean elementary school teachers who responded about the support needs of their own students. The instrument assesses three dimensions (i.e., rep

Dementia education programmes for formal caregivers of people with intellectual disability are limited. This study was not designed or powered to evaluate effectiveness, but to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness of outcome measures for a co-produced dementia education programme within intellectual disability services. A mixed-methods, quasi-experimental feasibility study was conducted with 40 formal caregivers recruited from supported living and residential providers across four NHS Trusts in the Northwest of England. The programme comprised interactive modules, case st
