The status of clinic-based STD patient education: the need for a commitment to innovation in health communication.

Although knowledge of safer sex practices is increasing in high-risk populations, such as STD clinic patients, this knowledge does not often translate into behavior change. As a result, STD reinfection rates among clinic patients remain high, resulting in large numbers of return patient visits. As part of a study to evaluate strategies for improving clinic-based education for patients with STDs, we conducted formative research interviews with inner-city clinic managers or other key staff to identify opportunities for and barriers to enhancing STD patient education. These interviews revealed th

Effect of nutrition education on the nutritional status of low-income pregnant women of Mexican descent.

Low-income pregnant women of Mexican descent were studied to determine whether their food habits could be improved by nutrition education. Biochemical indices of nutritional status were also investigated. Twenty-four-hour dietary recalls were obtained at an initial interview and again at a final interview after a nutrition education program, which was offered to a randomly selected treatment group. At the initial interview, the mean nutrient intakes that were most often below two-thirds of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) were iron, vitamin A, thiamin, and calcium. The mean energy value

Associations between household incense burning and delayed motor development among preterm infants modified by gestational age and maternal educational status.

BACKGROUND: Household incense burning is a common ritual behavior in the Asia-Pacific region but has been associated with inferior developmental outcomes in term infants. We aimed to examine these associations among preterm infants. METHODS: Information from 1190 mother-infant pairs during 6- and 18-month follow-up to the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study was examined for associations between household incense burning exposure and infant neurodevelopmental milestone achievement using multivariable Cox proportional hazard model with propensity score weighting, along with stratified, sensitivity, and d

Low education and employment status drive cardiometabolic health: a social determinants perspective in Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome has emerged a major strain on healthcare systems worldwide, with marked disparities in incidence across different regions, which are partly attributed to social determinants of health (SDOH). While research has touched upon the link between SDOH and CKM, and isolated SDOH factor's influence on cardiovascular health has been probed in China, evaluation of how SDOH collectively affect CKM in Chinese population remains underexplored in a systematic fashion. METHODS: The study drew on Shanghai community population (STONE cohort, n = 4,066

The effectiveness of education-based interventions on iodine knowledge, attitude, behaviour, and status: a systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Iodine deficiency remains a significant public health issue, further highlighted by the concern of its re-emergence in multiple countries. The health burden of iodine deficiency is high, especially in those who are vulnerable to the effects of iodine deficiency, such as pregnant women, infants, and children. Studies have shown that the public has low awareness and misconceptions regarding iodine. Increasing the understanding of the importance of iodine and its sources are crucial steps in controlling iodine deficiency in populations. This proposed systematic review aims to evaluate
