Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis Underlies the Differential Virulence of Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio vulnificus in American Eels (Anguilla rostrata).

Vibrio harveyi (Vh) and Vibrio vulnificus (Vv) are major bacterial pathogens affecting farmed eels, but their comparative virulence mechanisms remain poorly characterized. This study combined histopathology and transcriptomic profiling to investigate organ-specific damage and host responses in American eels (Anguilla rostrata, 20 g per fish, for a total of 60 fish) following experimental infection with LD50 doses of Vh (strain HA_1, 7.5 × 104 CFU/fish) and Vv (strain FJ_4, 5.0 × 105 CFU/fish). Tissue samples from liver, kidney, and spleen were collected at 0, 36, and 60 h post-infection (hpi).

Impact of the Filling Medium on the Colour and Sensory Characteristics of Canned European Eels (Anguilla anguilla L.).

The different vegetable oils used in canned fish as a filling medium have a preserving effect and contribute to the palatability of the product. In this study, the colour of European eels and the filling medium (sunflower oil, olive oil or spicy olive oil) was measured at different steps of the canning process. The sensorial characteristics of canned eels packed in the different oils were also evaluated. Colour scores (CieLab values) were higher in canned eels packed in sunflower and spicy olive oil than in canned eels packed in olive oil. The changes in colour parameters depended on the type

Effects of different deodorization methods on eel flavor quality: A multidimensional volatile analysis.

Eels are valued for their nutrition and flavor, but their fishy odor limits consumer acceptance. This study evaluated the effects of different deodorization methods on eel flavor using electronic nose (E-nose), gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), and headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). Samples included untreated eel (CK), and those subjected to acetic acid soaking (YS) and microbial fermentation using Saccharomyces cerevisiae (JM), Lactobacillus plantarum (ZW), Lactobacillus rhamnosus (SLT), and Staphylococcus nepalensi

The gonadal matrisome and its correlation with sex change in the ricefield eel Monopterus albus.

The matrisome is a comprehensive list of genes in the genome of an organism, which encodes proteins constituting or interacting with the extracellular matrix (ECM). The gonadal ECM is important for folliculogenesis and spermatogenesis. This study characterized the composition of the matrisome and the expression of matrisome genes in the gonad of ricefield eel, a protogynous sex-changing teleost, during sex change. A total of 838 matrisome genes were identified in the genome of ricefield eel through an in-silico orthology-based approach, of which 482, 443, 429, and 570 matrisome genes were show

Toxicological effect of herbicides (diuron and bentazon) on snake venom and electric eel acetylcholinesterase.

The toxicological effects of the active ingredients of the herbicides diuron and bentazon on the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) of krait (Bungarus sindanus) venom and electric eel (Electrophorus electricus) were studied. The diuron and entazon caused non-competitive inhibition of AChE from both species. For the venom AChE, the calculated IC50 for diuron and bentazon were found to be 3.25 and 0.14 μM, while for eel AChE, the respective IC50 values were 3.6 and 0.135 μM. In comparison, bentazon was a more potent inhibitor than diuron of AChE from both species. The insecticide lindane di

Effect of unmodified eel calcitonin on gastric acid secretion and gastric ulcers in the rat.

A new peptide, eel calcitonin (eCT), synthesized to the sequence of calcitonin (CT) extracted from the ultimo branchial bodies of eels, is now on the market in some countries for clinical use in the treatment of Paget's disease of bone and in the prophylaxis or treatment of certain osteoporoses. We have now studied the effect of eCT on the inhibition of gastric acid secretion and protection against experimentally induced gastric ulcers in rats as other CTs have previously been shown to have such effects. EelCT shows a dose dependent inhibition of gastric acid secretion, both volume and concent

Histochemical and ultrastructural study of the nervous elements in the pineal organ of the eel, Anuilla anguilla.

The pineal organ of the eel, Anguilla anguilla was studied light-and electron-microscopically. The tissue consists predominantly of glia-like supporting cells and photoreceptor-like sensory cells, which establish synaptic contacts with pineal nerve cells. Histochemically, a positive acetylcholinesterase (AchE) reaction can be observed in the perinuclear cytoplasm of the nerve cells and in the inner segments of the photoreceptor cells. Based on the intensity of the AchE reaction and the dimensions of the perikarya, at least two different types of nerve cells can be distinguished: type I with a

Co-existence of congeneric species of acanthocephala: Acanthocephalus lucii and A. anguillae in eels Anguilla anguilla in Ireland.

A population of eels Anguilla anguilla from Lough Derg, R. Shannon, Ireland, harbouring infections of both Acanthocephalus lucii and A. anguillae was studied over three years. Both parasite species had the same intermediate host and eels appeared to be the only definitive host for A. anguillae. Throughout the whole period, A. lucii was the dominant parasite, was over-dispersed throughout the eel population and most frequently occurred as a single species infection. A. anguillae was far less common, its dispersion was close to random at most times and it almost invariably occurred as a mixed sp

Transcriptomics reveals that NAD(P)H affects the development of the Zig-zag eel (Mastacembelus armatus ♀) × Spiny eel (Sinobdella sinensis ♂) hybrid offspring leading to low hatching rates.

Zig-zag eel (Mastacembelus armatus (2 n = 48)) and Spiny eel (Sinobdella sinensis (2 n = 48)) are two species of the Mastacembelidae family commonly found in southern China. Hybridization between the two has a very high deformity rate and a very low hatching rate. In order to investigate the reasons for this, the first hybridization between M. armatus and S. sinensis was carried out using artificial insemination, and the embryonic development of the hybrid offspring was examined using microphotography, and the malformations of the hybrid offspring were investigated by transcriptomics. Hybrid fractional groupers and moray eels driven deep learning for pneumonia detection using multi-modal data in federated learning.

Pneumonia is a severe lung infection triggered by various viral pathogens. Detecting and diagnosing pneumonia using clinical images is challenging because its visual features often resemble those of other pulmonary conditions. As a result, existing approaches for pneumonia prediction frequently face struggles in achieving high accuracy and also face issues in protecting the security of the medical data. Thus, this paper presents a novel model named Fractional Groupers and Moray Eels optimization_Euclidean, Expectation loss (FGMEO_EESHLossNet) for pneumonia detection utilizing multi-modal data

Analysis of visual opsin gene expression in Japanese eels upon sexual maturation and exposure to different wavelengths of light.

Fish inhabiting diverse photic environments, from the deep sea to shallow freshwater, offer a valuable model for studying visual receptor characteristics and spectral adaptation mechanisms. This study investigated changes in visual opsin transcript levels in Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) during sexual development and exposure to light conditions simulating their life cycle. Tissue-specific expression analysis revealed the predominance of four opsin genes (dso, fwo, rh2, and sws2) in the eyes. Sexual maturation using human chorionic gonadotropin was confirmed by increased gonadosomatic inde

Unravelling the metabolomic signatures of migrant and non-migrant glass eels (Anguilla anguilla) and their response to diazepam exposure.

Understanding the migratory cycle of the European eel is crucial for implementing effective conservation measures. The reasons why some glass eels settle in lower estuaries rather than migrating upriver remain unclear. This study aims to identify metabolomic signatures that distinguish active (migrant) from inactive (non-migrant) glass eels. Using a combination of target and non-target screening (NTS) approaches, the metabolite profile of glass eels was studied, and a PLS-DA classification model was applied to find differences between behavioural phenotypes. This model highlighted methionine,

Isolation and Identification of a New Isolate of Anguillid Herpesvirus 1 from Farmed American Eels (Anguilla rostrata) in China.

Anguillid herpesvirus 1 (AngHV-1) is a pathogen that causes hemorrhagic disease in various farmed and wild freshwater eel species, resulting in significant economic losses. Although AngHV-1 has been detected in the American eel (Anguilla rostrata), its pathogenicity has not been well characterized. In this study, an AngHV-1 isolate, tentatively named AngHV-1-FC, was isolated from diseased American eels with similar symptoms as those observed in AngHV-1-infected European eels and Japanese eels. AngHV-1-FC induced severe cytopathic effects in the European eel spleen cell line (EES), and numerous
