Spinal muscular atrophy: a delayed development hypothesis.

Spinal muscular atrophy is an inherited neuromuscular disorder. The gene responsible for the disease has been identified and named the SMN gene. This review is prompted by recent advances in understanding cellular function of the SMN gene and its gene product and by the increasing evidence that maturation of all parts of the neuromuscular system is delayed in spinal muscular atrophy patients. We suggest that the timing of developmental changes in motoneurons and muscles is critical for their survival. Delayed maturation of either motoneuron or muscle can cause these cells to die so the molecul

Easy and Hard Auditory Tasks Distinguished by Otoacoustic Emissions and Event-related Potentials: Insights into Efferent System Activity.

The medial olivocochlear (MOC) system is thought to be responsible for modulation of peripheral hearing through descending (efferent) pathways. This study investigates the connection between peripheral hearing function and auditory attention tasks of different degrees of difficulty. Peripheral hearing function was evaluated by analyzing the amount of change in otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) by contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS), a well-known effect of the MOC system. Simultaneously, levels of attention were evaluated by event-related potentials (ERPs). The ERPs showed clear differences in

Morphology and connections of neurons in area 17 projecting to the extrastriate areas MT and 19DM and to the superior colliculus in the monkey Callithrix jacchus.

Neurons of area 17, the primary visual cortex, project to various anatomically and physiologically different extrastriate areas and subcortical regions. In the present investigation, we addressed the question of whether the efferent neurons in area 17 can contribute to functional diversity between these regions. We approached this question by analyzing the dendritic morphology of neurons in area 17 projecting to area MT, area 19DM, and the superior colliculus in the new world simian primate Callithrix jacchus, because dendritic morphology is an important factor in determining physiological pro

Tonotopic and somatotopic representation in the nucleus basalis of the barn owl, Tyto alba.

We have investigated the somatosensory and auditory representations in the nucleus basalis of the barn owl. In pigeons and finches, the nucleus basalis contains a representation of the beak and an auditory area. In the barn owl, the nucleus basalis also contains a complete somatotopic map of the head and body (as in the budgerigar), with a tonotopically organized auditory area in close proximity to the representation of the facial ruff and the preaural area. Recordings within and around the nucleus basalis revealed predominantly (about 80%) contralateral responses to somatic stimulation. The s

Autonomic innervation of the carotid body: role in efferent inhibition.

The carotid body (CB) is a chemosensory organ that monitors blood chemicals and initiates compensatory reflex adjustments to maintain homeostasis. The 'afferent' sensory discharge induced by changes in blood chemicals, e.g. low PO(2) (hypoxia), is relayed by carotid sinus nerve (CSN) fibers and has been well studied. Much less is known, however, about a parallel autonomic (parasympathetic) 'efferent' pathway that is the source of CB inhibition. This pathway is the focus of this review which begins with a historical account of the early findings and links them to more recent data on the source

Efferent system degeneration in the human temporal bone.

Sense organ deposits have been described in temporal bones from patients with vestibular neuronitis, Meniere's disease, and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo that are not found in a comparable series of temporal bones without vestibulopathy. Because the recurrent vestibulopathies are caused by vestibular ganglionitis and the vestibulocochlear anastomosis was degenerated in these temporal bones, the deposits may represent the end buds of regenerating efferent axons injured in passage through the vestibular ganglion. Such neural buds have been described with transmission electron microscopy i

Selective degeneration of a putative cholinergic pathway in the chinchilla cochlea following infusion with ethylcholine aziridinium ion.

Ethylcholine aziridinium ion (AF64A) diluted in artificial perilymph, or artificial perilymph alone was infused into the cochlea of chinchillas. After a survival time of 7 days, the cochleas were fixed with aldehydes, post-fixed in osmium and embedded in epoxy resin for light and electron microscopy. The ultrastructure of the cochleas infused with artificial perilymph was normal. Infusion of 1 microM AF64A resulted in massive degeneration of the axons of the lateral efferent system, a putative cholinergic pathway that originates in the brainstem and terminates on dendrites of the spiral gangli

Connections of the anterior ectosylvian visual area (AEV).

We have previously described a visual area situated in the cortex surrounding the deep infolding of the anterior ectosylvian sulcus of the cat (Mucke et al. 1982). Using orthograde and retrograde transport methods we now report anatomical evidence that this anterior ectosylvian visual area (AEV) is connected with a substantial number of both cortical and subcortical regions. The connections between AEV and other cortical areas are reciprocal and, at least in part, topographically organized: the rostral AEV is connected with the bottom region of the presylvian sulcus, the lower bank of the cruc

Afferent and efferent connections of cerebellar lobe C3 of the mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersi: an HRP study.

The present paper is devoted to the extrinsic connections of lobe C3 of the highly differentiated corpus cerebelli of the electric fish Gnathonemus petersi. For this purpose, HRP injections or gels were placed in distinct parts of lobe C3 or its peduncle, in the pretectal region, and in the eye. Moreover, the presence of serotonin and tyrosine-hydroxylase was studied with immunohistochemical methods. The afferent connections of the rostral and caudal part of lobe C3 appear to differ considerably. Although both parts receive comparable projections from two pretectal nuclei (termed nucleus genic

Magnetic stimulation of the sacral roots.

Magnetic stimulation using an external surface coil induces an electrodynamic field that penetrates various tissues and stimulates peripheral nerves in a similar fashion to conventional electrical stimulation. An 83 mm magnetic surface coil was used to stimulate 11 spinal cord injury (SCI) patients, during which time detrusor activity and evoked potentials of the striated urinary sphincter motor pathways were evaluated. All patients had urodynamic studies and conventional sacral evoked potentials prior to magnetic stimulation. The mean bladder capacity was 337 ml (range 109-590), mean leak poi

A conserved axon type hierarchy governing peripheral nerve assembly.

In gnathostome vertebrates, including fish, birds and mammals, peripheral nerves link nervous system, body and immediate environment by integrating efferent pathways controlling movement apparatus or organ function and afferent pathways underlying somatosensation. Several lines of evidence suggest that peripheral nerve assembly involves instructive interactions between efferent and afferent axon types, but conflicting findings challenge this view. Using genetic modeling in zebrafish, chick and mouse we uncover here a conserved hierarchy of axon type-dependent extension and selective fasciculat

Role of astrocytes in rhythmic motor activity.

Rhythmic motor activities such as breathing, locomotion, tremor, or mastication are organized by groups of interconnected neurons. Most synapses in the central nervous system are in close apposition with processes belonging to astrocytes. Neurotransmitters released from neurons bind to receptors expressed by astrocytes, activating a signaling pathway that leads to an increase in calcium concentration and the release of gliotransmitters that eventually modulate synaptic transmission. It is therefore likely that the activation of astrocytes impacts motor control. Here we review recent studies de

Insights into the background of autonomic medicine.

Knowledge of the physiology underlying the autonomic nervous system is pivotal for understanding autonomic dysfunction in clinical practice. Autonomic dysfunction may result from primary modifications of the autonomic nervous system or be secondary to a wide range of diseases that cause severe morbidity and mortality. Together with a detailed history and physical examination, laboratory assessment of autonomic function is essential for the analysis of various clinical conditions and the establishment of effective, personalized and precise therapeutic schemes. This review summarizes the main as

Organization of afferent and efferent projections of the nucleus basalis prosencephali in a passerine, Taeniopygia guttata.

The connections of nucleus basalis (NB) of the rostral forebrain of the zebra finch were investigated electrophysiologically and with anterograde and retrograde tracing methods to determine their functional organization, the sources of their pontine afferents, and the targets of their telencephalic efferents. The nucleus was found to be partitioned into three major components, a rostral lingual part that received a hypoglossal projection via a lateral subnucleus of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus (PrV), a middle beak part that received a trigeminal projection via a medial subnucleus o

Trans-Spinal Focused Ultrasound Stimulation Selectively Modulates Descending Motor Pathway.

Compared to current non-invasive methods utilizing magnetic and electrical means, focused ultrasound provides greater spatial resolution and penetration depth. Despite the broad application of ultrasound stimulation, there is a lack of studies dedicated to the investigation of acoustic neuromodulation on the spinal cord. This study aims to apply focused ultrasound on the spinal cord to modulate the descending pathways in a non-invasive fashion. The application of trans-spinal focused ultrasound (tsFUS) was examined on the motor deficit mouse model. tsFUS was achieved using a single-element foc

The thoracic muscular system and its innervation in third instar Calliphora vicina Larvae. II. Projection patterns of the nerves associated with the pro- and mesothorax and the pharyngeal complex.

We describe the anatomy of the nerves that project from the central nervous system (CNS) to the pro- and mesothoracic segments and the cephalopharyngeal skeleton (CPS) for third instar Calliphora larvae. Due to the complex branching pattern we introduce a nomenclature that labels side branches of first and second order. Two fine nerves that were not yet described are briefly introduced. One paired nerve projects to the ventral arms (VAs) of the CPS. The second, an unpaired nerve, projects to the ventral surface of the cibarial part of the esophagus (ES). Both nerves were tentatively labeled af

Renal nerves and experimental hypertension: evidence and controversy.

Noradrenergic fibers innervate various parts of the nephron and can contribute to sodium and water homeostasis by influencing hemodynamic variables, tubular reabsorptive mechanisms, and renin release. As renal function is considered to be a primary determinant of arterial pressure, efferent renal nerves may be an important link between the central nervous system and the kidney in the development and maintenance of hypertension. Little is known about the relative importance of renal nerves and their interactions with other factors in influencing renal function chronically. There is disagreement

New insights on the role of the insular cortex and habenula in OSA.

PURPOSE: Abnormal structure or function in the central nervous system (CNS) can also affect obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Because human afferent and motor pathways that regulate apnea are still poorly understood, it is not possible to modify the behavior of motor neurons to control airway function. The purpose of this article is to clear the central control mechanism of genioglossus (GG) and to discuss how altered activity in the limbic system and its related structures might affect OSA development, in order to provide help for the treatment of this disease. METHODS: Functional magnetic reso

Catecholaminergic systems in the zebrafish. II. Projection pathways and pattern of termination of the locus coeruleus.

The locus coeruleus is a widely projecting isthmal noradrenergic nucleus. In the zebrafish, it consists of between three and ten neurons, most of which have multiple, bilaterally projecting axons. Immunohodological studies show that the locus coeruleus provides most, if not all, of the noradrenergic innervation of the brain rostral to the isthmus. The pathways and targets in the zebrafish are similar to ascending coeruleal projections of other vertebrates. Axons ascend through two main pathways: the longitudinal catecholamine bundle and the periventricular catecholamine pathway. The former is
