Polar bears are inefficient predators of seabird eggs.

Climate-mediated sea-ice loss is disrupting the foraging ecology of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) across much of their range. As a result, there have been increased reports of polar bears foraging on seabird eggs across parts of their range. Given that polar bears have evolved to hunt seals on ice, they may not be efficient predators of seabird eggs. We investigated polar bears' foraging performance on common eider (Somateria mollissima) eggs on Mitivik Island, Nunavut, Canada to test whether bear decision-making heuristics are consistent with expectations of optimal foraging theory. Using aer

Ultrasonographic Diagnosis of Schistosoma mansoni Eggs in Rectum.

Schistosomiasis is a trematode infection endemic in more than 70 countries that affects an estimated 250 million people. We report the case of a 60-year-old healthy female referred for endoscopic ultrasound after rectal examination revealed granular lesions. Ultrasound revealed the presence of deep mucosal nodular lesions with calcified/hyperechoic inclusions. Histologic evaluation has confirmed the final diagnosis of chronic schistosomal colitis. In patients with nonspecific intestinal lesions without a suspected diagnosis of schistosomiasis, endoscopic ultrasound can be enlightening. Schisto

The affinity of magnetic microspheres for Schistosoma eggs.

Schistosomiasis is a chronic parasitic disease of humans, with two species primarily causing the intestinal infection: Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum. Traditionally, diagnosis of schistosomiasis is achieved through direct visualisation of eggs in faeces using techniques that lack the sensitivity required to detect all infections, especially in areas of low endemicity. A recently developed method termed Helmintex™ is a very sensitive technique for detection of Schistosoma eggs and exhibits 100% sensitivity at 1.3 eggs per gram of faeces, enough to detect even low-level infections

Dientamoeba fragilis DNA detection in Enterobius vermicularis eggs.

Dientamoeba fragilis is an intestinal protozoan suspected of causing gastrointestinal symptoms, and its mode of transmission is unknown, although first described almost a century ago. A hypothesis is that Enterobius vermicularis is a vector for D. fragilis, and recently, D. fragilis DNA was detected within surface-sterilized eggs of E. vermicularis. Using real-time PCR, we detected D. fragilis DNA in 18 (85%) of 21 samples of E. vermicularis eggs collected from patients harbouring D. fragilis in faeces. This finding supports the hypothesis that E. vermicularis may have an important role in the

Anaphylaxis to weaver ant eggs: a case report.

The weaver ants (Oecophyllas maragdina), the tropical ants commonly found in Asia and Australia, can produce eggs which become the expensive delicacies for Thai people especially in the northern and northeastern part of Thailand. Anaphylactic reaction can occur from the most common triggers of ingested foods and drugs. Some hidden and newly recognized foods are now described as the triggers of anaphylaxis. This is the case report of anaphylaxis to the weaver ant eggs of after ingesting them for 2 hours and produced anaphylactic reactions, including generalized urticaria, angioedema, wheezing a

Chemical contamination of free-range eggs from Belgium.

The elements manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, arsenic, selenium, molybdenum, cadmium, antimony, thallium, lead and mercury, and selected persistent organochlorine compounds (dioxins, marker and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls, dichlorodiphenyltricholroethane (DDT) and metabolites as well as other chlorinated pesticides) were analysed in Belgian free-range eggs obtained from hens of private owners and of commercial farms. It was found that eggs from private owners were more contaminated than eggs from commercial farms. The ratios of levels in eggs from private owners to the levels

Priming of the immune response by schistosome eggs.

Schistosomiasis mansoni is a chronic disease caused by infection with helminths of the genus Schistosoma mansoni. Adult schistosomes live intravascularly, and for transmission of this infection it is necessary for parasite eggs to traverse the endothelium, and migrate to the intestinal lumen, from where they can exit the body to continue the lifecycle. This process is dependent on an intact host CD4 T helper (Th) cell response to egg antigens. Perhaps because of this, eggs have evolved to be highly immunogenic and capable of inducing potent Th responses. The egg-induced Th response is unusual

Mercury in Morelet's crocodile eggs from northern Belize.

Recent studies have examined mercury accumulation in crocodilians. However, though most researchers have focused on tissue concentrations, few have examined mercury levels in crocodilian eggs. In July 1995, we analyzed mercury in 31 nonviable Morelet's crocodile ( Crocodylus moreletii) eggs collected from eight nests across three localities in northern Belize. All eggs were found to contain mercury. Based on an individual egg basis, mean concentration of mercury for all three localities was among the lowest reported for any crocodilian species. When localities were examined separately, mean co

[Effect of chemotherapy on the Schistosoma mansoni eggs].

Praziquantel administered to mice with Schistosoma mansoni infection (50 cercarias/8 weeks) was observed to cause death of adult worms and disintegration of the eggs trapped within granulomas, sometimes with calcification, after the 4th day of treatment. Combined administration of oxamniquine/hycanthone to animals similarly infected, although quite effective in killing adult worms, did not interfere with the eggs in the tissue. The miracidium eclosion test was positive up to the 15th day after the curative treatment of these animals. Since praziquantel treatment causes a rapid destruction of e

Isolation of Ascaris suum eggs for experimental purposes.

Eggs from the pig roundworm Ascaris suum are easily obtainable in large numbers from uterus of adult worms. It is therefore natural that eggs isolated from that organ have been used almost exclusively in experimental ascariasis, both in the natural host (Kelley & Nayak 1965, Gaafar & Keittevuti 1972, Andersen et al. 1973, Jørgensen et al. 1975 and others) and in small laboratory animals (Jeska et al. 1969, Berger 1971 and others). In some cases no details are given on the origin and preparation of the infective eggs or the eggs may originate both from uteri of adult worms and from pig faeces (

Actin-Related Causes of Aneuploidy in Human Eggs.

Gametogenesis (oogenesis and spermatogenesis) relies on a specialized form of cell division known as meiosis. During this process, chromosomes in parental cells undergo two successive rounds of segregation, resulting in a halving of their number and the formation of haploid germ cells, which is essential for subsequent fertilization. However, in human female gametogenesis, errors in chromosome segregation occur at a notably high frequency, leading to the formation of oocytes with abnormal chromosome numbers. Once fertilized, such oocytes often develop into aneuploid embryos, which exhibit seve

TiO2 eliminates Hymenolepis nana eggs via photocatalytic activity.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) exhibits bactericidal, fungicidal, and virucidal effects under ultraviolet light irradiation. However, there are few reports on the photocatalytic effect of TiO2 against parasitic eggs. This study aims to preliminarily investigate the effect of TiO2 photocatalysis on the inactivation of Hymenolepis nana (H. nana) eggs. We employed the trypan blue staining method to assess the survival rate of 100 insect eggs, investigating the roles of light, TiO2 concentration, solution pH and light intensity in the process of inactivating eggs with TiO2. Characterization of antigens of Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) eggs.

Enterobiasis (pinworm infection) caused by Enterobius vermicularis is a common parasitic infection prevalent worldwide especially in children. Infection is diagnosed by microscopic detection of E. vermicularis eggs on perianal swabs. This study aimed to characterize the antigens of E. vermicularis eggs as a preliminary step towards identifying diagnostic targets for detection in infected individuals. The study was conducted between October 2019 and February 2020, following approval from Ethics Review Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo (EC-19-034). E. vermicularis eggs

Eggs and Magnetism: New Approaches for Schistosomiasis Diagnosis.

To date, reliable techniques that can provide accurate information on the local and global prevalence of schistosomiasis are still associated with high costs or labour-intensive processes. Here we discuss old and new concepts for diagnostic approaches, and we highlight structural properties of schistosome eggshells that result in their affinity for magnetic materials as a new diagnostic approach.

Isolated Schistosoma mansoni eggs prevent allergic airway inflammation.

Chronic helminth infection with Schistosoma (S.) mansoni protects against allergic airway inflammation (AAI) in mice and is associated with reduced Th2 responses to inhaled allergens in humans, despite the presence of schistosome-specific Th2 immunity. Schistosome eggs strongly induce type 2 immunity and allow to study the dynamics of Th2 versus regulatory responses in the absence of worms. Treatment with isolated S. mansoni eggs by i.p. injection prior to induction of AAI to ovalbumin (OVA)/alum led to significantly reduced AAI as assessed by less BAL and lung eosinophilia, less cellular infl

Scanning electron microscopy of eggs of Sabethes cyaneus.

Mosquitoes of the Neotropical genus Sabethes, some species of which are yellow fever vectors, most often develop through the immature stages in tree holes. Sabethes eggs have not been previously characterized using scanning electron microscopy. Eggs of Sabethes cyaneus (length: 349.6 +/- 2.7 microm; width: 172.6 +/- 1.14 microm; n = 10) are almost biconical when examined from the top. From a lateral perspective 2 surfaces can be seen. One surface is smooth and more convex, whereas the other is less convex and partially covered by a network from which many fungiform tubercles arise. The micropy

Bacteria stimulate hatching of yellow fever mosquito eggs.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti Linnaeus is a peridomestic mosquito that lays desiccation-resistant eggs in water-filled human-made containers. Previous investigations connected egg hatching with declining dissolved oxygen (DO) that is associated with bacterial growth. However, past studies failed to uncouple DO from other potential stimulatory factors and they contained little quantitative information about the microbial community; consequently, a direct role for bacteria or compounds associated with bacteria in stimulating egg hatching cannot be dismissed.
