Does Psychosocial Ego Development Partially Mediate the Association Between Defense Mechanisms and Death Attitude?

Some authors suggest the existence of links between the mechanisms of defense and attitude toward death, however, mechanisms underlying these relationships are not well understood. The objective of the present research was to investigate whether psychosocial ego development is a partial mediator in the association between mechanisms of defense and death attitude. The study included participants (N = 382) aged 19-85 (M = 47.02, SD = 16.19). Three measures were used: Defense Style Questionnaire-40, Psychosocial Inventory of Ego Strengths, and Death Attitude Profile-Revised. Findings partly confi

Unsupervised Learning for Depth, Ego-Motion, and Optical Flow Estimation Using Coupled Consistency Conditions.

Herein, we propose an unsupervised learning architecture under coupled consistency conditions to estimate the depth, ego-motion, and optical flow. Previously invented learning techniques in computer vision adopted a large amount of the ground truth dataset for network training. A ground truth dataset, including depth and optical flow collected from the real world, requires tremendous effort in pre-processing due to the exposure to noise artifacts. In this paper, we propose a framework that trains networks while using a different type of data with combined losses that are derived from a coupled

Association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity and ego structure of the Nanai people.

BACKGROUND: A man-made chemical disaster occurred in the Amur River, leading to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Nanai people indigenous to the river's surrounding area. PTSD severity measured by the total scores of Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) (Total-I) and Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) (Total-C) were not always identical in terms of demographic and ethnocultural characters. It is possible that the results derived using the Total-I and Total-C may differ for persons with different backgrounds and/or individual characteristics. In this study, the associations bet

Ego functioning predicts first-year status in adults with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Severe personality disturbance is a feature that possibly explains chronicity in eating disorders, a largely inexplicable development in terms of previously investigated factors. We tested this hypothesis in a group of 41 anorectics and bulimics with ratings of 13 ego functions and of status at 1-year follow-up. Patients who still were preoccupied with weight or shape and had a DSM-III-R eating disorder at follow-up had more severe ego disturbance at initial presentation than those who were free from symptoms. The relevance of demographics, syndromal diagnosis and clinical factors other than e

Relations among nightmare frequency and ego strength, death anxiety, and sex of college students.

The present study was designed to investigate empirically the relationship between self-reports of nightmare frequency and ego strength and death anxiety in both men and women. In addition, the interrelations among these variables were assessed. 20 undergraduates with high frequencies of nightmares and 20 with low frequencies (10 men and 10 women per group) were administered the Barron Ego Strength Scale and a death anxiety scale. Significant differences were found between nightmare groups on the Barron scale for men and women but none on the death anxiety scale either by nightmare frequency o

Ego Depletion and Deception: The Protective Role of Empathy in Self-Serving and Altruistic Forms of Deception.

Deception is the intentional action of individuals to manipulate others into holding false beliefs, and can take both altruistic and self-serving forms. Drawing on the motivational-attentional shift perspectives, the current research examined how ego depletion influences individuals' propensity to deception and whether empathy moderates this relationship. In Experiment 1, ego depletion was manipulated through the letter "e" task, and deception was assessed using a spot-the-difference paradigm. Results indicated that individuals experiencing high ego depletion engaged in altruistic deception to

The Role of the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex in Ego Dissolution and Emotional Arousal During the Psychedelic State.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is a classic serotonergic psychedelic that induces a profoundly altered conscious state. In conjunction with psychological support, it is currently being explored as a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder and depression. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is a brain region that is known to be involved in mood regulation and disorders; hypofunction in the left DLPFC is associated with depression. This study investigated the role of the DLPFC in the psycho-emotional effects of LSD with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephal

A comparison of visual responses to object- and ego-motion in the macaque superior temporal polysensory area.

The responses of visual movement-sensitive neurons in the anterior superior temporal polysensory area (STPa) of monkeys were studied during object-motion, ego-motion and during both together. The majority of the cells responded only to the image of a moving object against a stationary background and failed to respond to the retinal movement of the same object (against the same background) caused by the monkey's ego-motion. All the tested cells continued responding to the object-motion during ego-motion in the opposite direction. By contrast, most cells failed to respond to the motion of an obj

Egocentrism and ego resiliency: personality characteristics associated with perspective-taking from early childhood to adolescence.

In this study we examined the longitudinal relation between ego resiliency and egocentrism. Measures of Level 1 and Level 2 egocentrism were administered to one hundred eleven 3 1/2-year-old children. Independent personality evaluations were available on these children at ages 3, 4, 7, 11, and 14 in the form of Q-sort ratings by independent sets of teachers and examiners. The relation between egocentrism and ego resiliency was observed to depend on level of egocentrism, as well as on sex of subject. In the sample of girls, both Level 1 and Level 2 egocentrism were negatively correlated with eg

Regional Spread of an Outbreak of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae Through an Ego Network of Healthcare Facilities.

BACKGROUND: In 2013, New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM)-producing Escherichia coli, a type of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae uncommon in the United States, was identified in a tertiary care hospital (hospital A) in northeastern Illinois. The outbreak was traced to a contaminated duodenoscope. Patient-sharing patterns can be described through social network analysis and ego networks, which could be used to identify hospitals most likely to accept patients from a hospital with an outbreak. METHODS: Using Illinois' hospital discharge data and the Illinois extensively drug-resistant org

[Obsessive-compulsive symptoms in structural ego defects--a study exemplified by anorexia and bulimia nervosa].

The present study reports findings concerning the hypothesis whether patients with narcissistic self-system disturbances show more obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms as compared to patients without such disturbances. Ninety-one patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) were investigated using the Narzissmusinventar (NI), the Hamburger-Zwangsinventar (HZI), the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) and the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI). The NI-data demonstrated a great variance of self-system disturbances in AN and BN; a cluster analysis id

Participation in physical activity and life skills in older adults: sequential roles of resilience and ego integrity.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, fostering adaptive capacities to resolve daily challenges has become a critical public health priority. While older adults' participation in physical activity is known to promote healthy aging, the psychological processes through which it may be associated with practical life skills in older adults remain under-explored. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the sequential associations between participation in physical activity and life skills in older adults, focusing on the roles of resilience and ego integrity. METHODS: A total of 279 older adults p

Ego-Resiliency and Coping Styles in Patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background and Objectives: In the difficult socio-economic situation of recent years, particular attention has been paid to factors that may have a protective effect on mental health. One of these factors is the individual resource known as ego-resiliency. The aim of the study was to assess ego-resiliency as a potential protective factor against stress symptoms and to determine effective coping strategies in a group of patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted from March 2020 to March 2022 among patients attend

Moderating Role of Quiet Ego in the Relationship Between Psychological Well-Being and State Anxiety in Adolescents.

Adolescence is a key period for psychological well-being, during which state anxiety poses a significant risk. Emphasizing the development of self-resources is crucial in mitigating such risks. The quiet ego, as a positive self-resource, supports psychological well-being; however, its role in relation to state anxiety has been insufficiently explored in the literature. The current study contributes to literature examining the quiet ego during adolescence and explaining its role in the relationship between psychological well-being and state anxiety. This study was conducted to examine the relat

Challenged and changed: Quiet ego and posttraumatic growth in mothers raising children with autism spectrum disorder.

Posttraumatic growth theory posits that when life circumstances are perceived as stressful, secondary appraisal processes can be recruited in ways to facilitate both coping efforts and personal growth. Using a mixed-methods approach, we found mothers' most challenging experiences involved child behavior (e.g. aggression, communication, and social issues) and psychosocial impacts (e.g. lack of social support, perceived judgment of others, perceived loss, and personal distress). Descriptions of most rewarding experiences reflect posttraumatic growth frameworks including constructive perceptions

Utilizing hypnosis and ego-state therapy to facilitate healthy adaptive differentiation in the treatment of sexual disorders.

Much of the literature focuses on the pathology that falls to the far right of the Watkins (1997) differentiation-dissociation continuum, such as Dissociative Identity Disorder and Dissociative Disorder NOS. Adding a "far left" to this continuum, as well as a construct of what the "far left" looks like, makes apparent the value of healthy adaptive differentiation for those individuals that fall to the "far left" of the spectrum; those who don't differentiate enough. A discussion of sexual dysfunction at this end of the continuum and cases of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder and Vaginismus dem

Stability of ego defenses and endocrine responses in women prior to breast biopsy and ten years later.

Thirty women with breast masses were evaluated psychologically and endocrinologically ten years ago while they were awaiting breast biopsy (3). Eight of these women proved to have benign fibrocystic disease and 22 had breast cancer. A significant (p < 0.05) positive correlation was found between extent of failure of psychological "defenses" and cortisol metabolite excretion rate in these 30 women. On follow-up, 12 women had died (11 with cancer and one who had had benign disease); 7 women were lost to follow-up. Of the remaining 11, one refused to participate, leaving 10 women for follow-up st

Extrapunitive and intropunitive individuals activate different parts of the prefrontal cortex under an ego-blocking frustration.

Different people make different responses when they face a frustrating situation: some punish others (extrapunitive), while others punish themselves (intropunitive). Few studies have investigated the neural structures that differentiate extrapunitive and intropunitive individuals. The present fMRI study explored these neural structures using two different frustrating situations: an ego-blocking situation which blocks a desire or goal, and a superego-blocking situation which blocks self-esteem. In the ego-blocking condition, the extrapunitive group (n = 9) showed greater activation in the bilat
