To evaluate their relative importance in tick-borne disease transmission in New Jersey, host-seeking Amblyomma americanum (L.) and Ixodes scapularis Say adults and nymphs were collected during spring activity periods in 2003 and 2004 to determine relative frequencies at which these ticks were encountered from an area known to be hyperendemic for Lyme disease. Although similar numbers of the two species were encountered during early spring of both years, A. americanum were encountered more often later in the season and exhibited a longer activity period than I. scapularis. A. americanum nymphs

Ehrlichiosis is a rare tick-borne zoonosis caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis, E. ewingii and related species. In solid organ transplant recipients, immunosuppression can result in atypical presentations, delayed diagnosis and poor outcomes. The disease remains under-recognised among lung transplant recipients despite its potentially fatal course. A man in his early 70s with a history of bilateral lung transplantation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease presented with a high-grade fever and shortness of breath. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) culture grew Pseudomonas aeruginosa and meropenem w

A seroprevalence and risk factor study of emerging tickborne infectious diseases (Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and babesiosis) was conducted among 230 residents of a semirural community in Sonoma County, California. Over 50% of residents reported finding a tick on themselves in the preceding 12 months. Samples from 51(23%) residents were seroreactive to antigens from one or more tickborne disease agents: 1.4% to Borrelia burgdorferi, 0.4% to Ehrlichia equi, 4.6% to Ehrlichia chaffeensis, and 17.8% to the Babesia-like piroplasm WA1. Only 14 (27%) of these seroreactive residents reported one or m

BACKGROUND: Wildlife is an important natural reservoir of many tick-borne pathogens. These agents have an impact on the health of humans and other animals throughout the world. This study was conducted to determine whether and what species of tick-borne agents had infected wild birds collected from Guangxi, in southwest China.
FINDINGS: Liver samples obtained from wild birds were tested for the presence of tick-borne pathogens by PCR assays and sequencing of the flagellin and 16S rRNA genes. Borrelia garinii was detected in Eurasian collared doves (2/57, 3.5%) from among the 95 wild birds. An

Human monocytic ehrlichiosis is a tickborne disease with a spectrum of presentations ranging from asymptomatic, mild to fatal. Ehrlichiosis can transiently cause white blood cells abnormalities that mimic leukemia/lymphoma and cases have been, on rare occasions, initially mistaken for hematological malignancies. We report a case of Ehrlichia chaffeensis infection suspected to be acute promyelocytic leukemia at presentation, prompting therapy with all-trans-retinoic acid. Physicians should keep tickborne transmitted illnesses on the differential in patients presenting with pancytopenia, especia

BACKGROUND: Human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) and Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) are caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis and Rickettsia rickettsii, respectively. The pathogenesis of RMSF relates to rickettsia-mediated vascular injury, but it is unclear in HME.
METHODS: To study histopathologic responses in the lymphatic system for correlates of immune injury, lymph nodes from patients with HME (n = 6) and RMSF (n = 5) were examined. H&E-stained lymph node tissues were examined for five histopathologic features, including hemophagocytosis, cellularity, necrosis, and vascular congestion and e

A PCR assay of 43 acute-phase serum samples was evaluated as a method for early detection of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) and determination of etiology when serologic testing is inconclusive. Sequence-confirmed products of the HGE agent were amplified from three individuals residing or having exposure history in Minnesota or Wisconsin, and similarly confirmed products from Ehrlichia chaffeensis were amplified from three individuals from Florida or Maryland. Etiology, as determined by PCR and serology, was the same whenever there was a fourfold difference between the maximum titers of

In this report we attempt to evaluate the prevalence of antibodies against Rickettsia conorii, R. typhi, Coxiella burnettii, and Ehrlichia chaffeensis in central Tunisia. Five hundred sera from blood donors, collected between March and June 1993, were tested for these 4 antibodies using an indirect immunofluorescence antibody assay (IFA). Nine percent of the sera had antibodies against R. conorii (IgG > 1:32) by IFA, and 8% by Western blotting; with IFA, 3.6% had antibodies to R. typhi, 26% to C. burnetii (> 1:50), and none to E. chaffeensis. Infection rates with R. conorii and R. typhi did no

The Kaliningrad Oblast, located in the westernmost part of Russia and bordering European Union countries, is a popular tourist destination. However, limited research has been conducted on the bacteria found in ticks in this region. We, therefore, investigated the prevalence of certain bacteria, including Borrelia, Rickettsia, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia, as well as the genospecies of the spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) in Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus tick species. To accomplish this, we employed commercial qPCR for pathogen screening. We identified specific genospecies by sequ

Ehrlichiosis in the United States is caused by three closely related bacterial species (Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Ehrlichia ewingii, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum), all transmitted through tick bite. Although there is variation with respect to geography and tick vector, the clinical manifestations are similar, and treatment of these infections is identical. Ehrlichiosis can present with a spectrum of neurologic manifestations, ranging in severity from headache to meningoencephalitis. Treatment is straightforward if the diagnosis is suspected, but antibiotic therapy should not be delayed pending l

In Thailand, five species of Ehrlichia (E. canis, E. chaffeensis, E. equi, E. risticii and Anaplasma platys) have been reported to infect dogs. Although ehrlichial infections can cause ocular disorders, the severity and type of ocular disorder varies between individual infected dogs. The aims of this study were to determine the factors associated with retinal detachment and to investigate the species of Ehrlichia that cause ocular disorders in natural infected dogs. In the present study, ocular examination, complete blood count and total protein measurement were performed in 134 dogs brought i

Ehrlichiosis and rickettsiosis are two common bacterial tick-borne diseases in the southeastern United States. Ehrlichiosis is caused by ehrlichiae transmitted by Amblyomma americanum and rickettsiosis is caused by rickettsiae transmitted by Amblyomma maculatum and Dermacentor variabilis. These ticks are common and have overlapping distributions in the region. The objective of this study was to identify Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Rickettsia species associated with questing ticks in a Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) hotspot, and identify habitats, time periods, and collection methods for col

This article describes a serological survey for rickettsiosis in the county of Novo Cruzeiro, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in 1998, testing schoolchildren and dogs. Sera included 331 samples from schoolchildren from an endemic area and 142 samples from schoolchildren from a non-endemic area in the county. All children examined were healthy and had not reported clinical symptoms of Brazilian spotted fever prior to the serological survey. Some 35 children in the endemic area were reactive to Rickettsia rickettsiiby indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) with a titer of 1:64, corresponding to 10.6%.

BACKGROUND: Human granulocytotropic anaplasmosis (HGA), caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis (HME), caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis, are tick-borne zoonoses. The vast majority of Anaplasma phagocytophilum infections reported worldwide are from the United States. Ehrlichia chaffeensis infections are reported exclusively from North America, with the majority reported from the United States. We have recently summarized the available data on HGA and HME in the form of two systematic reviews. We compared data from these two systematic reviews to objectify diffe

Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne disease with diverse clinical presentations, ranging in severity from a flu-like illness with fever and myalgias to a serious systemic disease with multisystem organ failure. Nephrotic syndrome has been reported previously in two cases of human ehrlichiosis. A kidney biopsy revealed minimal change disease in one of those patients. Herein, we present the case of a 40-year-old man with ehrlichiosis who developed nephrotic syndrome, cryoglobulinemia, and secondary membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN). The patient originally presented with shortness of breat

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne ehrlichiosis and mite-borne scrub typhus represent important emerging zoonotic rickettsial diseases. Although scrub typhus has been recognized by the Taiwanese public health system, information on ehrlichial infections is scarce in Taiwan. In this study, the risk of spread of ectoparasites on rodents through aerial and marine transportation was assessed in international and domestic harbors. Here, we report the first systematic surveillance of seroprevalence against Ehrlichia spp. in small mammals on the main island of Taiwan.
METHODS: In total, 1648 small mammals were

BACKGROUND: In the Pacific islands countries and territories, very little is known about the incidence of infectious diseases due to zoonotic pathogens. To our knowledge, human infections due to Rickettsia spp., Coxiella burnetii, Ehrlichia spp. and Bartonella spp. have never been reported in French Polynesia; and infections due to C. burnetti have been reported worldwide except in New Zealand. To evaluate the prevalence of this disease, we conducted a serosurvey among French Polynesian blood donors.
METHODS: The presence of immunoglobulin G antibodies against R. felis, R. typhi, R. conorii,

An indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) was used to identify patients with antibodies reactive to the human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) agent. Serum samples collected from clinically ill individuals were submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by physicians via state health departments from throughout the United States and tested against a panel of ehrlichial and rickettsial pathogens. Antibodies reactive to the HGE agent were detected in 142 (8.9%) of 1,602 individuals tested. There were 19 confirmed and 59 probable (n = 78) cases of HGE as defined by seroconversion

The genus Ehrlichia is composed of tick-borne obligate intracellular gram-negative alphaproteobacteria of the family Anaplasmataceae. Ehrlichia includes important pathogens affecting canids (E. canis, E. chaffeensis, and E. ewingii), rodents (E. muris), and ruminants (E. ruminantium). Ehrlichia minasensis, an Ehrlichia closely related to E. canis, was initially reported in Canada and Brazil. This bacterium has now been reported in Pakistan, Malaysia, China, Ethiopia, South Africa, and the Mediterranean island of Corsica, suggesting that E. minasensis has a wide geographical distribution.
