Elder abuse is an increasingly common problem in modern society, in the context of rapid population aging. Despite increasing awareness, this phenomenon remains heavily underreported, and effective interventions are yet to be made, thus leading to significant medical, social, and legal implications. The purpose of this review is to present an updated situation of the depths of elder abuse, presenting its prevalence both at the global and European level, the two main environments in which it is the most common (community and institutional settings), different forms of abuse, risk factors, and c

A previous study revealed that individuals with a high number of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have an increased risk of perpetrating physical and psychological abuse against older adults (≥65 years). However, whether two types of positive childhood experiences (PCEs) can buffer this association remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether PCEs provide a compensatory buffer against the association between ACEs and elder abuse perpetration. This cross-sectional study used data from the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey, conducted from September 12 to October 19, 2022

The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine implicit theories of elder abuse in a sample of men and women of European-American descent. Seventy-six participants, ranging in age from 17 to 79, filled out an open-ended qualitative survey asking them to give examples of behaviors considered in their culture to be extremely abusive, moderately abusive, and mildly abusive in the context of an adult child-older adult parent dyad. Results indicated that various types of physical aggression and neglect (with an emphasis on physical neglect) were the most common examples of extreme abuse. Psyc

Instruments designed to measure specific types of elder mistreatment are not available, but they may be warranted after an initial screen indicates abuse or risk for abuse. The purpose of this study was to evaluate definitions for different types of elder mistreatment and validate the indicators as perceived by adult protective services (APS) caseworkers' opinions. Through 351 APS research network participants, a Delphi survey was completed. A 45% return rate was achieved for round one and 40% for round two with 70 same respondents from both rounds. These types of abuse, emotional abuse, explo

Elder abuse affects approximately 15% of adults aged 60 years and older worldwide each year, most often within the family setting. This study aimed to explore physicians' responses to suspected cases of intrafamilial elder abuse. A qualitative study informed by grounded theory was conducted, based on ten semi-structured interviews with physicians from various specialties. Physicians evaluated suspected abuse situations and implemented medico-social interventions while preserving the therapeutic alliance. Legal authorities were involved when there was an immediate risk to the older person or wh

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The opioid crisis has run rampant throughout America, with communities in rural Appalachia especially hard hit. While the direct effects of opioid use disorder on individuals, families, and communities are well documented, an unforeseen consequence of this crisis is the abuse of older adults by family members or paid caregivers with opioid addiction. The purpose of this study was to characterize cases of opioid-involved elder abuse compared to cases where opioids were not involved.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Guided by lifecourse and ecological perspectives, we ana

Older adults often rely on family and friends for care and support. Individuals providing support can take advantage of their vulnerabilities, resulting in neglect, physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, or financial exploitation. Conventional approaches, which older adults are often reluctant to pursue, utilize social service interventions, criminal justice responses, civil litigation, and case review multi-disciplinary teams. This project explored providers' perspectives on using restorative processes, alternative approaches that bring together the person harmed, the person committing the har

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this rapid review was to explore how residential aged care staff conceptualise and identify elder abuse.
METHODS: English-language publications, between 2000 and 2017, about elder abuse in residential aged care in developed countries were sought from three academic databases. Only perspectives on staff-to-resident and resident-to-resident abuse were included.
RESULTS: Over 2000 articles were screened, and 19 journal articles were included in the review. A wide range of abusive behaviours was identified, but there was little common understanding of what constituted e

BACKGROUND: Elder abuse is recognised worldwide as a serious problem, yet quantitative syntheses of prevalence studies are rare. We aimed to quantify and understand prevalence variation at the global and regional levels.
METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched 14 databases, including PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, EMBASE, and MEDLINE, using a comprehensive search strategy to identify elder abuse prevalence studies in the community published from inception to June 26, 2015. Studies reporting estimates of past-year abuse prevalence in adults aged 60 years or older were inc

OBJECTIVES: To compare the prevalence of elder abuse using a multilevel approach that takes into account the characteristics of participants as well as socioeconomic indicators at city and country level.
METHODS: In 2009, the project on abuse of elderly in Europe (ABUEL) was conducted in seven cities (Stuttgart, Germany; Ancona, Italy; Kaunas, Lithuania, Stockholm, Sweden; Porto, Portugal; Granada, Spain; Athens, Greece) comprising 4467 individuals aged 60-84 years. We used a 3-level hierarchical structure of data: 1) characteristics of participants; 2) mean of tertiary education of each city

BACKGROUND: Elder abuse (EA), depressive symptoms, and loneliness represent a growing risk to the health, well-being, and premature mortality of older adults. However, the role of loneliness in the relationship between EA and depressive symptoms has not yet been examined.
AIMS: To investigate the associations between these constructs and to explore the possible mediating role of loneliness in the relationship between EA and depressive symptoms in a representative sample of older Mexican people.
METHODS: A representative community-dwelling survey of older adults aged 60 and older was conducte

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Elder abuse is common and has serious health consequences but is underrecognized by health care providers. An important reason for this is difficulty in distinguishing between elder abuse and unintentional trauma. Our goal was to identify injury patterns associated with physical elder abuse in comparison with those of patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with unintentional falls.
METHODS: We partnered with a large, urban district attorney's office and examined medical, police, and legal records from successfully prosecuted cases of physical abuse of victims ag

Elder abuse is recognized internationally as a growing problem. Recent years have seen an increase in the number of authors recommending that the MDs systematically question old people concerning possible abuse. The aim of our study was to ascertain the extent of suspicion of elder abuse and the different types of abuse. We design a cross-sectional survey including 460 patients > or = 65 years at different health centers (South East Spain). A face-to-face interview and a physical examination was carried out. Extent of suspected abuse was 44.6%. Female sex, > or = 75 years, widowhood, living al

PURPOSE: Early identification of elder abuse requires a valid, easily administered screening instrument. This study examined the reliability and validity of the Vulnerability to Abuse Screening Scale (VASS), a 12-item self-report measure with four factors (Vulnerability, Dependence, Dejection, and Coercion).
DESIGN AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 10,421 nationally representative Women's Health Australia study participants, aged 73-78, who completed the Time 2 postal survey in 1999. We tested validity of the VASS factor structure and whether baseline risk status independently predicted Ti

PURPOSE: Elder abuse is a global concern, yet detection methods focus mainly on victims. In community settings, trusted caregivers may perpetrate abuse that remains hidden due to cultural norms. Existing tools lack a contextual fit for sub-Saharan Africa. This study developed and validated the Screening Tool for Identifying Elder Abuse by Caregivers (STIEAC) in Southwest Nigeria.
METHODS: The study used Artino's seven-step questionnaire development framework, combining a literature review and caregiver focus groups to create culturally relevant items across the neglect, physical, psychologica

This scoping review aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the epidemiology, patient- and caregiver-associated factors, clinical characteristics, screening tools, prevention, interventions, and perspectives of health care professionals in regard to elder abuse in the out-of-hospital or emergency department (ED) setting. Literature search was performed with MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library. Studies were eligible if they were observational or experimental and reported on elder abuse in the out-of-hospital or ED setting.
