Antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications are widely prescribed to the general population for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes in a wide range of diseases, mainly of cardiovascular interest, spanning from acute events such as acute coronary syndromes (ACS), strokes, and thromboembolic disorders to chronic conditions like atrial fibrillation (AF) and peripheral vascular diseases. The management of such therapies is expected to escalate over time due to the aging population, which has a growing need for these medications, and the rising demand for surgical procedures. The management of ant

Management of abdominal aortic aneurysms has been the subject of rigorous scientific scrutiny. Prevalence studies have directed the formation of screening programmes, and observational studies and randomised controlled trials have defined aneurysm growth and treatment thresholds. Pre-emptive intervention with traditional open surgical repair has been the bedrock of improving long-term outcome and survival in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms but it is associated with a significant procedural morbidity and mortality. Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) has substantially reduced these ear

Crohn's disease (CD) remains a chronic, incurable disorder that presents unique challenges to the surgeon. Multiple factors must be considered to allow development of an appropriate treatment plan. Medical therapy often precedes or complements the surgical management. The indications for operative management of CD include acute and chronic disease complications and failed medical therapy. Elective surgery comes into play when patients are refractory to medical treatment if they have an obstructive phenotype. Toxic colitis, acute obstruction, perforation, acute abscess, or massive hemorrhage re

Blistering of the skin has been reported after high energy trauma or arthroplasties of large joints. It is rare in wrist trauma and seldom reported following elective wrist surgery. We present three cases of skin blistering after elective wrist surgery. Two female patients aged 18 and 35 years and one male patient aged 53 years were treated with total wrist fusion, carpometacarpal fusion, and open wrist ligament repair. They reported burning pain at the blister site. The blisters were clear and treated with dressing changes. There were no infections or wound complications and all blisters reso

Colon diverticulitis showed a great variability in kind, intensity and course of disease. Time and surgical procedure are dependent on the stage of diverticulitis (emergency procedure, elective resection, early elective resection). In emergency cases non-resecting procedures should not be performed. Here the Hartmann procedure and in favorable conditions the primary resection should be chosen. Other patients with acute diverticulitis should have early elective resection after short-term medical treatment (5-7 days). Patients with a chronic-recurrent course of disease should have an elective on

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the pain and suffering of chronic pain patients due to stoppage of "elective" interventional pain management and office visits across the United States. The reopening of America and restarting of interventional techniques and elective surgical procedures has started. Unfortunately, with resurgence in some states, restrictions are once again being imposed. In addition, even during the Phase II and III of reopening, chronic pain patients and interventional pain physicians have faced difficulties because of the priority selection of elective surgical

UNLABELLED: Part III of a review series on neurological complications of orthopedic surgery, this article describes the mechanisms and likelihood of peripheral nerve injury associated with some of the most common elective foot and ankle procedures for which anesthesiologists may administer regional anesthesia. Relevant information is broadly organized according to type of surgical procedure to facilitate reference by anesthesiologists and members of the anesthesia care team.
WHAT'S NEW: As the popularity of regional anesthesia continues to increase with the development of ultrasound guidance,

BACKGROUND: The current American College of Cardiology (ACC) guidelines recommend that elective percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) should not be performed in institutions without on-site cardiac surgery. We sought to determine the safety of PCI without cardiac surgical support on-site and specifically the safety of complex elective procedures. The results of the first 1000 procedures performed at our institution, which is a rural centre 80 km from the nearest cardiac surgical facility, are reported.
METHODS: Between September 2002 and April 2006 a total of 1000 procedures were performe

PURPOSE: Aim of this study was to report our experience in elective and emergency surgery on chronic hemodialysis (CH) patients for end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
METHODS: All patients on CH for ESRD who underwent various surgical procedures in our unit within the past 9-year period (2001-2010) were included in this study. These patients were divided into two groups according to the type of surgery performed: elective or emergency. Demographic data, indications for surgery, primary causes of ESRD, surgical procedures, postoperative complications, and mortality rates were studied.
RESULTS: O

ObjectivesThe prognostic value of preoperative serum albumin in patients undergoing elective aortic aneurysm repair remains uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated whether hypoalbuminemia predicts mortality in this population.MethodsA comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Ovid, and CENTRAL was conducted up to January 21, 2024. Eligible studies included patients undergoing elective aortic aneurysm repair, comparing mortality between those with hypoalbuminemia and those with normal serum albumin levels. The Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) tool was u

Many people living in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) lack access to safe surgical and anesthetic care. The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery (LCGS) recommended that all countries track surgical volume and target 5,000 procedures per 100,000 population. While some LMICs report operative volume, case distribution, and surgical capacity, little is known about these metrics in Botswana. The present study addresses this gap by examining trends across multiple surgical disciplines in Botswana over a 5-year period. All surgical procedures that took place from 2018 to 2022 across 6 g

OBJECTIVE: Preoperative assessment is important for neurosurgical risk stratification, but the level of evidence for individual screening tests is low. In preoperative urinalysis (UA), testing may significantly increase costs and lead to inappropriate antibiotic treatment. We prospectively evaluated whether eliminating preoperative UA was noninferior to routine preoperative UA as measured by 30-day readmission for surgical site infection in adult elective neurosurgical procedures.
METHODS: A single-institution prospective, pragmatic study of patients receiving elective neurosurgical procedure

INTRODUCTION: There is currently little evidence to guide the management of ventricular-peritoneal shunts during subsequent intraperitoneal procedures, and the influence of these procedures on the risk of shunt malfunction is poorly understood.
METHODS: A ten-year single institution retrospective analysis was undertaken to identify all paediatric patients with ventriculoperitoneal shunts. Statewide electronic medical records were reviewed to determine whether the patient had undergone any subsequent intraperitoneal procedures, and if so, how the shunt was managed during the procedure. Intrape

BACKGROUND: The intestinal anastomotic leakage is the most feared surgical complication of a digestive surgery and is associated with a significant increase of morbidity, mortality and hospital stay.
OBJECTIVE: Analyze the risk factors to the intestinal anastomotic leakage in elective surgery.
METHOD: Observational and retrospective study in which we include patients with intestinal anastomosis, in elective surgery at the second level hospital from January 2007 to January 2017.
RESULTS: 64 patients were included in the study, in which 7 presented anastomotic leakage. The statistically signi

The safety of complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) at hospitals without on-site cardiac surgical backup (Non-SOS) has been broadly established, but data specifically addressing elective coronary atherectomy in this setting remain limited. To evaluate whether on-site cardiac surgical backup status influences clinical outcomes of elective coronary atherectomy procedures using contemporary nationwide data. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) from 2016 to 2023. Elective hospitalizations involving coronary atherectomy were identified usin

PURPOSE: The use of general anesthesia in young children has come under increasing scrutiny due to its potential long-term neurotoxic effects. Meanwhile, regional anesthesia for surgical procedures in neonates has many advantages, including preservation of respiratory status and faster return to feeding. We describe the successful use of 3% 2-chloroprocaine administered via continuous caudal infusion as the sole anesthetic agent during elective surgical procedures in infants.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all patients who underwent elective surgical procedures under continuous caud

BACKGROUND: Perioperative cardiac arrest is more prevalent in emergency surgery and carries substantial mortality risks; however, large-scale studies examining its incidence, aetiology, and outcomes remain scarce. This study investigated the epidemiology of perioperative cardiac arrest in emergency and elective surgeries in Japan.
METHODS: We conducted a multicentre retrospective cohort study using the Japanese Intensive care PAtient Database (JIPAD), a nationwide ICU registry. Patients coming from the operating theatre who experienced cardiac arrest before ICU admission between April 2015 an
