White Matter Integrity Predicts Electrical Stimulation (tDCS) and Language Therapy Effects in Primary Progressive Aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), in conjunction with language therapy, improves language therapy outcomes in primary progressive aphasia (PPA). However, no studies show whether white matter integrity predicts language therapy or tDCS effects in PPA. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether white matter integrity, measured by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), predicts written naming/spelling language therapy effects (letter accuracy on trained and untrained words) with and without tDCS over the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in PPA. METHODS: Thirty-nine participant

Ability of electrical stimulation therapy to improve the effectiveness of robotic training for paretic upper limbs in patients with stroke.

We investigated whether untriggered neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can increase the effectiveness of shoulder and elbow robotic training in patients with hemiparesis. Thirty subacute stroke patients were randomly equally allocated to robot only (RO) and robot and electrical stimulation (RE) groups. During training, shoulder and elbow movements were trained by operating the robotic arm with the paretic arm, and the robotic device helped to move the arm. In the RE group, the anterior deltoid and triceps brachii muscles were electrically stimulated at sub-motor threshold intensity. T

Targeted therapies using electrical and magnetic neural stimulation for the treatment of chronic pain in spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Chronic neuropathic pain is one of the most common and disabling symptoms in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Over two-thirds of subjects with SCI suffer from chronic pain influencing quality of life, rehabilitation, and recovery. Given the refractoriness of chronic pain to most pharmacological treatments, the majority of individuals with SCI report worsening of this condition over time. Moreover, only 4-6% of patients in this cohort report improvement. Novel treatments targeting mechanisms associated with pain-maladaptive plasticity, such as electromagnetic neural stimul

Effects of Specific Electric Field Stimulation on the Release and Activity of Secreted Acid Phosphatases from Leishmania tarentolae and Implications for Therapy.

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease with 1.6 million new cases reported each year. However, there are few safe, effective, and affordable treatments provided to those affected by this disease. Still under-appreciated as potential pharmaceutical targets, especially for cutaneous leishmaniasis infections, are the two isozymes of secreted acid phosphatase (SAP). These enzymes are involved in the survival of the parasite in the sand fly vector, and in infecting host macrophages. While the application of electric or electromagnetic fields as a medicinal therapeutic is not new, the utility

The Role of Platelets in the Stimulation of Neuronal Synaptic Plasticity, Electric Activity, and Oxidative Phosphorylation: Possibilities for New Therapy of Neurodegenerative Diseases.

The central nervous system (CNS) is highly vascularized where neuronal cells are located in proximity to endothelial cells, astroglial limitans, and neuronal processes constituting integrated neurovascular units. In contrast to many other organs, the CNS has a blood-brain barrier (BBB), which becomes compromised due to infection, neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, traumatic brain injury, and other reasons. BBB disruption is presumably involved in neuronal injury during epilepsy and psychiatric disorders. Therefore, many types of neuropsychological disorders are accompanied by an increase in

Innovative In Vivo Approaches to Bone Regeneration: Combining Chitosan-Xanthan Gum Membranes, Electrical Stimulation, and Laser Therapy.

Critical bone defects present significant clinical challenges due to their debilitating nature and associated costs. Tissue engineering offers a promising solution, employing biomaterials like porous chitosan (CH) and xanthan gum (XG) membranes as scaffolds for tissue regeneration. Electrical stimulation (ES) and laser (L) therapy, known for osteogenic and anti-inflammatory effects, respectively, may synergistically enhance bone healing when combined with these membranes. This study evaluated CH/XG membranes and their association with ES and L for the treatment of critical bone defects (25 mm2

Ultrasound-triggered dual-mode therapy for heart failure via synchronized electrical stimulation and nitric oxide release.

The multifaceted pathophysiology of heart failure demands therapeutic strategies that can concurrently address its electrophysiological and metabolic components. Here, we report a lead-free and battery-free piezoelectric nanoplatform that, under ultrasound irradiation, serves as a dual-mode platform to simultaneously generate localized electrical stimulation and trigger spatiotemporally controlled nitric oxide (NO) release. In a mouse model of pressure-overload-induced heart failure, this ultrasound-driven regimen restored cardiac contractile function, reversed pathological remodeling, and sup
