Fluorinated copper phthalocyanine nanowires for enhancing interfacial electron transport in organic solar cells.

Zinc oxide is a promising candidate as an interfacial layer (IFL) in inverted organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells due to the n-type semiconducting properties as well as chemical and environmental stability. Such ZnO layers collect electrons at the transparent electrode, typically indium tin oxide (ITO). However, the significant resistivity of ZnO IFLs and an energetic mismatch between the ZnO and the ITO layers hinder optimum charge collection. Here we report that inserting nanoscopic copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (F(16)CuPc) layers, as thin films or nanowires, between the ITO anode and the

[Effects of heavy metallic ions on electron transport system activity of anaerobic sludge].

The influence of Ni2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ on electron transport system (ETS) activity of anaerobic 2-chlorophenon degradation sludge, as well as the effect of acclimation on microbial resistance to metallic toxicity, was investigated. The inhibitive effect of heavy metals on ETS activities acted within 0.25 h, and metallic toxicity aggravated with the increasing amount of metallic ions. The relative strength of inhibition was Ni2+ > Cd2+ > Cu2+ and was mainly dependent on the metallic ion concentration in solution. Acclimation with metals of low concentration was proved to be a good way to improve

Evidence for altered structure and impaired mitochondrial electron transport function in selenium deficiency.

Selenium (Se) deficiency in the experimental models, Coturnix coturnix japonica and Corcyra cephalonica, resulted in impaired mitochondrial substrate oxidations and lowered thiol levels. Studies with respiratory inhibitors confirmed reduced mitochondrial electron transport enzyme activities, especially at cytochrome c oxidase (COX), the terminal segment. Enhanced mitochondrial lipid peroxidation in Se deficiency was more pronounced in the heart tissue of the quail compared to other tissues. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity toward H2O2 and cumene hydroperoxide were generally low in the

Hyperoxic sheep pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells generate free radicals via mitochondrial electron transport.

Free radical generation by hyperoxic endothelial cells was studied using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO). Studies were performed to determine the radical species produced, whether mitochondrial electron transport was involved, and the effect of the radical generation on cell mortality. Sheep pulmonary microvascular endothelial cell suspensions exposed to 100% O2 for 30 min exhibited prominent DMPO-OH and, occasionally, additional smaller DMPO-R signals thought to arise from the trapping of superoxide anion (O2-.), hyd

Defects in citric acid cycle and the electron transport chain in progressive poliodystrophy.

We will present 8 children with progressive infantile or juvenile poliodystrophy (Alpers' disease), associated with a defect in pyruvate metabolism. Laboratory studies showed elevated levels of lactate in CSF and, in 4 children, elevated levels in serum. Histopathologic studies revealed lipid storage in liver and/or muscle tissue, sometimes myopathy with abnormal mitochondria and slight axonal degeneration in the peripheral nerve. Autopsy showed the characteristics of progressive poliodystrophy with degeneration and loss of neurons. Electron microscopy of cerebral cortex showed no mitochondria

The microbial metabolism of C1 compounds. The electron-transport chain of Pseudomonas am1.

Pseudomonas AM1, Hyphomicrobium X and Pseudomonas MS all contain cytochrome a/a(3) and a b-type cytochrome able to react with CO. Pseudomonas AM1 and Hyphomicrobium X also have a CO-binding cytochrome c. The purified cytochrome c (redox potential 0.26V) of Pseudomonas AM1 was not susceptible to oxidation by molecular oxygen. CO reacted slowly with the reduced form giving a CO difference spectrum with a peak at 412nm and troughs at 420nm and 550nm. Similar results were obtained with the cytochrome c of Hyphomicrobium (aerobically grown or anaerobically grown with nitrate) and with that of Pseud

Halogen-Bonding-Steered Thermal Reassembly into Brickwork Packing Motifs Enhances Electron Transport in Naphthalenediimides.

Electron transport in organic semiconductor solids with high carrier mobility is crucial for the realization of high-performance organic electronic devices. In molecular semiconductors, self-assembly pathways and the resulting supramolecular superstructures play a decisive role in dictating the molecular packing, which in turn governs charge-transport efficiency. Therefore, weak noncovalent interactions must be carefully engineered to fine-tune molecular stacking motifs. Herein, we investigate the role of halogen-bonded intermolecular interactions in directing naphthalenediimide (NDI) stacks t

Mitochondrial electron transport chain is essential for acute inflammatory stress responses in mouse fibroblasts.

Fibroblasts are linked to stress responses in a broad number of diseases. Here, we used immortalized mouse embryonic fibroblasts (iMEFs) to elucidate their signaling behavior in response to proinflammatory lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and angiotensin II (Ang-II). To test for the role of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC), iMEFs were cultured in glucose- and galactose-containing media promoting glycolysis and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, respectively. In addition, we used alternative oxidase (AOX), a ubiquinol oxidoreductase that serves as a naturally evolved rescue mecha

H4K12 Lactylation Regulates NDUFS7 to Drive Microglia Reverse Electron Transport in Spinal Cord Injury.

Microglial polarization toward the pro-inflammatory state drives secondary injury following spinal cord injury (SCI), yet the mechanisms of metabolic reprogramming governing this phenotypic shift remain elusive. Here, we identify a lactate-dependent signaling axis linking histone lactylation to mitochondrial reverse electron transport (RET) that sustains neuroinflammation. We demonstrate that SCI-induced accumulation of lactate promotes histone H4 lysine 12 lactylation (H4K12la), which directly upregulates NDUFS7, a core subunit of mitochondrial Complex I. Elevated NDUFS7 triggers mitochondria

The Caenorhabditis elegans mitochondrial electron transport chain: its role in adaptation, longevity, and biotechnology.

In Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) exhibits remarkable functional plasticity. This review summarizes the composition, regulation, and adaptive roles of complexes I-V. Depending on oxygen availability, the ETC uses either ubiquinone (UQ) or rhodoquinone (RQ), an ancestral strategy for hypoxia or high hydrogen sulfide (H2S) conditions. Mild ETC impairments can extend lifespan through redox signaling, mitohormesis, and activation of the mitochondrial unfolded protein response. These processes likely represent conserved mechanisms of bioenergeti

Tolfenpyrad Modulates Antibiotic Activity on Francisella novicida and Synergizes with Electron Transport Chain Inhibitors.

Francisella tularensis is a highly virulent intracellular pathogen for which treatment options remain limited and vulnerable to resistance development. Tolfenpyrad, a pesticide with selective antibacterial activity against Francisella species, has emerged as a promising compound, yet its mechanism of action remains poorly defined. Here, we investigated how tolfenpyrad modulates the activity of established antibiotics and probed its effects on bacterial energy metabolism in Francisella. In this study, we used combinatorial drug experiments to identify both synergistic and antagonistic drug-drug

Adaptations in electron transport chain complexes of clinical Rhodococcus equi revealed through comparative genomics.

Rhodococcus equi is an important veterinary and zoonotic pathogen that survives inside macrophage phagolysosomes. Nitrate reductase NarGHI is a known virulence factor for this pathogen. This enzyme complex serves as the terminal electron acceptor in anaerobic respiration in other pathogens, such as the phylogenetically related Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A recent study demonstrated that R. equi survives under anaerobic conditions. In this work, we endeavored to uncover the electron transport chain complexes of R. equi. By in silico comparison to known complexes in the Transporter Classificatio

NDP52 deficiency accelerates chondrocyte degeneration through promoting pathogenic mitochondrial ROS via reverse electron transport.

NDP52, a constituent of the selective autophagy receptors (SARs), was recognized for its involvement in facilitating substrate degradation via autophagic bridging. However, its autonomous function apart from autophagy remained largely unexplored. Here, we reported that NDP52 was down-regulated in degenerated chondrocytes. Besides, NDP52 deficiency promoted the extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, inflammation, cell apoptosis and senescence via its autophagy-independent functions. The absence of NDP52 disrupted the flow of electron respiration chains and led to the production of intracellula

NEK7 couples SDHB to orchestrate respiratory chain electron transport homeostasis that impedes liver fibrosis.

The mode of electron transport in mitochondrial respiratory chain determines whether it generates energy or more reactive oxygen species (ROS), a key for cellular adaptation to diverse oxygen environments. However, the understanding of the mechanisms remains incomplete. Here, we find that NIMA-related kinase 7 (NEK7), targeted to mitochondria by its signal peptides, binds to succinate dehydrogenase complex iron sulfur subunit B (SDHB), stabilizing the spatial conformation of complex II and promoting forward electron transport. Deficiency of NEK7 in hepatocytes induces reverse electron transpor

Dirac-Like Fermions Anomalous Magneto-Transport in a Spin-Polarized Oxide 2D Electron System.

In a 2D electron system (2DES) the breaking of the inversion, time-reversal and bulk crystal-field symmetries is interlaced with the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) triggering exotic quantum phenomena. Here, epitaxial engineering is used to design and realize a 2DES characterized simultaneously by ferromagnetic order, large Rashba SOC and hexagonal band warping at the (111) interfaces between LaAlO3, EuTiO3, and SrTiO3 insulators. The 2DES displays anomalous quantum corrections to the magneto-conductance driven by the time-reversal-symmetry breaking occurring below the magnetic transition

Strong electron-phonon interaction retarding phonon transport in superconducting hydrogen sulfide at high pressures.

Realistic representation of quantum interactions between electrons and phonons is crucial to uncovering the fundamental origin of superconductivity and predicting superconductors with a high transition temperature (Tc). We study the influence of the intrinsic electron-phonon interaction (EPI) on the phonon transport of superconducting hydrogen sulfide at high pressures, and its variation under an external magnetic field using all-electron first-principles calculations. High pressure greatly shortens interatomic distances, modifies the Fermi surface with sharp variation around sulfide atoms and

Photosynthetic Electron and Proton Transport in Chloroplasts: EPR Study of ΔpH Generation, an Overview.

This is a brief overview focused on the electron paramagnetic resonance applications to the study of the proton transport processes in chloroplasts. After brief description of structural and functional organization of the chloroplast electron transport chain, our attention is focused on the measurements of trans-thylakoid pH difference (ΔpH) with pH-sensitive spin-probes. The use of spin-probes is based either (i) on measuring the ΔpH-partitioning of spin-probes between the thylakoid lumen and external volume, or (ii) on monitoring changes in the electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of pH-s
