Pyridinic Nitrogen Doped Carbon Dots Supply Electrons to Improve Photosynthesis and Extracellular Electron Transfer of Chlorella pyrenoidosa.

Optimizing photosynthesis is imperative for providing energy and organics for all life on the earth. Here, carbon dots doped with pyridinic nitrogen (named lev-CDs) are synthesized by the one-pot hydrothermal method, and the structure-function relationship between functional groups on lev-CDs and photosynthesis of Chlorella pyrenoidosa (C. pyrenoidosa) is proposed. Pyridinic nitrogen plays a key role in the positive effect on photosynthesis caused by lev-CDs. In detail, lev-CDs act as electron donors to supply photo-induced electrons to P680+ and QA+ , causing electron transfer from lev-CDs to

Processes Induced by Electrons at Sub-Ionization Energies Studied by the Correlated Ions-(Ions/Neutrals) Mass Spectrometry.

Sub-ionization energy electrons play a substantial role in the early time of (radiation/photo-) chemistry by generating reactive ions and neutral radicals. As the ions can be easily identified by mass spectrometry methods, information on the neutral species produced in correlation relies mainly on theoretical calculations. Here we show that coupling a double counter-propagative electron beams with a dual (+/-) time-of-flight mass spectrometer is probably the most versatile instrument for studying processes induced by low energy electrons, by providing correlated information between (ion and io

Same-Energy UV Photons and Low-Energy Electrons Activating Methane and Ammonia Frozen in Amorphous Solid Water.

UV photons and low-energy electrons play an important role in the evolution of various molecules in the interstellar medium (ISM). Here, we examined the product molecule formation as a result of irradiation of 193 nm photons and 6.4 eV electrons (same energy under identical laboratory conditions) on D2O|CH4 + ND3|D2O sandwiched films deposited on Ru(0001) substrate at 25 K in ultrahigh vacuum as a model for processes in the ISM. Temperature-programmed desorption spectra performed following the irradiation revealed the signature of hydrazine and formamide product molecules. These molecules were

Probing the Reaction Mechanisms Involved in the Decomposition of Solid 1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane by Energetic Electrons.

The decomposition mechanisms of 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane (RDX) have been explored over the past decades, but as of now, a complete picture on these pathways has not yet emerged, as evident from the discrepancies in proposed reaction mechanisms and the critical lack of products and intermediates observed experimentally. This study exploited a surface science machine to investigate the decomposition of solid-phase RDX by energetic electrons at a temperature of 5 K. The products formed during irradiation were monitored online and in situ via infrared and UV-vis spectroscopy, and products s

Nitric oxide reduction to ammonia by TiO₂ electrons in colloid solution via consecutive one-electron transfer steps.

The reaction mechanism of nitric oxide (NO) reduction by excess electrons on TiO2 nanoparticles (e(TiO2)(-)) has been studied under anaerobic conditions. TiO2 was loaded with 10-130 electrons per particle using γ-irradiation of acidic TiO2 colloid solutions containing 2-propanol. The study is based on time-resolved kinetics and reactants and products analysis. The reduction of NO by e(TiO2)(-) is interpreted in terms of competition between a reaction path leading to formation of NH3 and a path leading to N2O and N2. The proposed mechanism involves consecutive one-electron transfers of NO, and

Vibrationally Mode-Specific Molecular Energy Transfer to Surface Electrons in Metastable Formaldehyde Scattering from Cesium-Covered Au(111).

Nonadiabatic interaction of adsorbate nuclear motion with the continuum of electronic states is known to affect the dynamics of chemical reactions at metal surfaces. A large body of work has probed the fundamental mechanisms of such interactions for atomic and diatomic molecules at surfaces. In polyatomic molecules, the possibility of mode-specific damping of vibrational motion due to the effects of electronic friction raises the question of whether such interactions could profoundly affect the outcome of chemistry at surfaces by selectively removing energy from a particular intramolecular ads

Selective pressure of PFOA on microbial community: Enrichment of denitrifiers harboring ARGs and the transfer of ferric-electrons.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a class of permanent organic pollutants, is frequently detected in surface and ground water, with the latter made up primarily of porous media (such as soils, sediments, and aquifers) that harbor microbial communities. Therefore, we investigated the effects of PFOA on water ecosystems and found that, under stimulation by 2.4 μM PFOA, denitrifiers were significantly enriched due to their hosting antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs), which were 1.45 times more abundant than the control. Furthermore, denitrifying metabolism was enhanced by Fe(II) electron donation. Spe

Reduced flavins promote oxidative DNA damage in non-respiring Escherichia coli by delivering electrons to intracellular free iron.

When cells are exposed to external H(2)O(2), the H(2)O(2) rapidly diffuses inside and oxidizes ferrous iron, thereby forming hydroxyl radicals that damage DNA. Thus the process of oxidative DNA damage requires only H(2)O(2), free iron, and an as-yet unidentified electron donor that reduces ferric iron to the ferrous state. Previous work showed that H(2)O(2) kills Escherichia coli especially rapidly when respiration is inhibited either by cyanide or by genetic defects in respiratory enzymes. In this study we established that these respiratory blocks accelerate the rate of DNA damage. The respir

Electronic spectroscopy and electronic structure of diatomic CrC.

Optical spectra of jet-cooled diatomic CrC have been recorded in the near infrared region using resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy combined with mass-selective detection of the resulting ions. Several weak transitions have been observed, along with one relatively strong band near 842 nm. Rotational resolution and analysis of this band confirms that the ground state is of (3)Sigma(-) symmetry. Ab initio calculations have been performed that demonstrate that the ground state is highly multiconfigurational in nature, with a leading configuration of 1sigma(2)2sigma(2)1pi(4)1delta(2) for t

Large thermoelectric effect driven by high-order anharmonicity from synergistic lone-pair electrons and rattling modes in K3Au3Sb2.

Using first-principles calculations, self-consistent phonon theory and the Boltzmann transport equation, we investigate the effect of high-order anharmonicity on the thermal transport and thermoelectric properties of K3Au3Sb2. Through examination of atomic vibration modes, structural anisotropy and analysis of three- and four-phonon scattering processes, it is found that a lattice thermal conductivity (κL) as low as ∼0.5 W m-1 K-1 is achieved at room temperature. Our study reveals that the intrinsic ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (κL) is primarily attributed to the pronounced quartic an

Activation of Semicore Electrons in Alkali Metals and Their Role in the B1-B2 Phase Transition under Pressure.

Alkali fluorides are often thought of as archetypical ionic compounds whose structures can be understood in terms of the packing of rigid spheres. At ambient pressure, they assume the rocksalt (B1) structure, while under only a few GPa of pressure, the cesium chloride (B2) structure, with higher coordination numbers, is assumed for KF, RbF, and CsF. NaF requires almost 10 times more pressure to undergo this same phase transition, which has not been observed for LiF. Herein, we provide a detailed analysis, based upon quantum chemical calculations, explaining this behavior. We show that for the

Emerging Functions of Nanostructured Porous Silicon-With a Focus on the Emissive Properties of Photons, Electrons, and Ultrasound.

Recent topics of application studies on porous silicon (PS) are reviewed here with a focus on the emissive properties of visible light, quasiballistic hot electrons, and acoustic wave. By exposing PS in solvents to pulse laser, size-controlled nc-Si dot colloids can be formed through fragmentation of the PS layer with a considerably higher yield than the conventional techniques such as laser ablation of bulk silicon and sol-gel precursor process. Fabricated colloidal samples show strong visible photoluminescence (~40% in quantum efficiency in the red band). This provides an energy- and cost-ef

Radiation therapy for angiosarcoma of the scalp: treatment outcomes of total scalp irradiation with X-rays and electrons.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Wide surgical excision is the standard treatment for angiosarcoma of the scalp, but many patients are inoperable. Therefore, we investigated the outcome of radiation therapy for angiosarcoma of the scalp. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventeen patients with angiosarcoma of the scalp underwent radiation therapy with total scalp irradiation. Four patients had cervical lymph node metastases, but none had distant metastases. A median initial dose of 50 Gy in 25 fractions was delivered to the entire scalp. Subsequently, local radiation boost to the tumor sites achieved a median to

Proposal for manipulating and detecting spin and orbital States of trapped electrons on helium using cavity quantum electrodynamics.

We propose a hybrid architecture in which an on-chip high finesse superconducting cavity is coupled to the lateral motion and spin state of a single electron trapped on the surface of superfluid helium. We estimate the motional coherence times to exceed 15  μs, while energy will be coherently exchanged with the cavity photons in less than 10 ns for charge states and faster than 1  μs for spin states, making the system attractive for quantum information processing and strong coupling cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments. The cavity is used for nondestructive readout and as a quantum bus m

Ternary XBe4H5- (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) Clusters: Planar Tetracoordinate Si/Ge/Sn/Pb Species with 18 Valence Electrons.

As one of the important probes of chemical bonding, planar tetracoordinate carbon (ptC) compounds have been receiving much attention. Compared with ptC clusters, the heavier planar tetracoordinate silicon, germanium, tin, lead (ptSi/Ge/Sn/Pb) systems are scarcer and more exotic. The 18-valence-electron (ve)-counting is one important guide, though not the only rule, for the design of planar tetra-, penta-coordinate carbon and silicon clusters. The 18ve ptSi/Ge system is very scarce and needs to be expanded. Based on the isoelectronic principle and bonding similarity between the Al atom and the

Converging small-field electron therapy using 20-25 MeV electrons: a Monte Carlo feasibility study for deep-seated tumors.

Objective. In photon beam radiotherapy, modern delivery techniques have allowed to substantially reduce the beam energy needed for the safe and efficient irradiation of deep-seated targets, with even Co-60 beams being now able to irradiate targets at any depth. The purpose of this work is to determine if for electron radiotherapy, advanced beam delivery techniques allow the use of beam energies currently available in the clinic to treat target sites usually reserved for photons or very high energy charged particles.Methods. Segmented computed tomography images from three sites, brain, lung and

Comparative treatment planning of very high-energy electrons and photon volumetric modulated arc therapy: Optimising energy and beam parameters.

BACKGROUND: Very High-Energy Electron (VHEE) beams offer potential advantages over current clinical radiotherapy modalities due to their precise dose targeting and minimal peripheral dose spread, which is ideal for treating deep-seated tumours. To aid the development of clinical VHEE machines, this study adressed the need to identify optimum VHEE beam characteristics for tumours across various anatomical sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: VHEE treatment planning employed matRad, an open-source treatment planning system, by adapting its proton pencil beam scanning implementation. VHEE beam characte

Insight into the Behavior of Interstitial Electrons in CuZn Alloy-Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework Catalysts for Enhanced CO2 Electroreduction.

The development of application-oriented, highly active, and selective CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) electrocatalysts for high value-added products is expected to achieve carbon neutrality and solve the problem of energy shortage. Cu-based catalysts, as the most promising catalysts for high value-added product generation, were often limited by slow CO generation and weak CO adsorption in practical applications. Guided by theoretical screening, herein, an atomic-scale CuZn alloy cluster configuration was manipulated on covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and its CO2RR performance was further im

GYY4137-Derived Hydrogen Sulfide Donates Electrons to the Mitochondrial Electron Transport Chain via Sulfide: Quinone Oxidoreductase in Endothelial Cells.

The protective effects of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) to limit oxidative injury and preserve mitochondrial function during sepsis, ischemia/reperfusion, and neurodegenerative diseases have prompted the development of soluble H2S-releasing compounds such as GYY4137. Yet, the effects of GYY4137 on the mitochondrial function of endothelial cells remain unclear, while this cell type comprises the first target cell after parenteral administration. Here, we specifically assessed whether human endothelial cells possess a functional sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase (SQOR), to oxidise GYY4137-released H2S wi
