Normal Amplitude of Electroretinography and Visual Evoked Potential Responses in AβPP/PS1 Mice.

Alzheimer's disease has been shown to affect vision in human patients and animal models. This may pose the risk of bias in behavior studies and therefore requires comprehensive investigation. We recorded electroretinography (ERG) under isoflurane anesthesia and visual evoked potentials (VEP) in awake amyloid expressing AβPPswe/PS1dE9 (AβPP/PS1) and wild-type littermate mice at a symptomatic age. The VEPs in response to patterned stimuli were normal in AβPP/PS1 mice. They also showed normal ERG amplitude but slightly shortened ERG latency in dark-adapted conditions. Our results indicate subtle

Photopic 30 Hz flicker electroretinography predicts ocular neovascularization in central retinal vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: To confirm the predictive value of photopic cone b-wave implicit time in 30 Hz flicker electroretinography (ERG) for ocular neovascularization (NV) in central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), and to compare the ERG results to the presumed healthy fellow eye. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 71 consecutive patients with CRVO. After ERG examination, all patients were followed for at least 12 months, or until NV was found. Three patients died during the study period; none of the other patients were lost to follow-up. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients (33.8%) developed NV during follow-up

Electroretinography and electro-oculography to localize abnormalities in early-stage inflammatory eye disease.

Electrophysiological investigations were performed in patients with inflammatory eye disease characterized by the presence of vitreous cells. The eyes were classified into four categories on the basis of fluorescein angiography: 1) no fluorescein leakage from retinal vessels, 2) fluorescein leakage from peripheral retinal vessels, 3) fluorescein leakage from the disc or macular vessels, and 4) fluorescein leakage from retinal vessels associated with pigment epithelial and choroidal changes. The electro-oculogram light rise was abnormally increased in the eyes in category 1, but it progressivel

Enhancing the diagnostic potential of electroretinography in Parkinson's disease: A review of protocol and cohort criteria.

Electroretinography has emerged as a promising tool for identifying retinal functional anomalies in major psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and autism spectrum disorder, positioning it as a potential biomarker of monoaminergic dysfunction. However, despite its potential, electroretinography studies in Parkinson's disease (PD) over the past decades have been inconsistent, largely due to variations in research methodologies. These limitations diminish its potential and hinder the association between retinal electroph

The Use of the RETeval Portable Electroretinography Device for Low-Cost Screening: A Mini-Review.

Electroretinography (ERG) provides crucial insights into retinal function and the integrity of the visual pathways. However, ERG assessments classically require a complicated technical background with costly equipment. In addition, the placement of corneal or conjunctival electrodes is not always tolerated by the patients, which restricts the measurement for pediatric evaluations. In this short review, we give an overview of the use of the RETeval portable ERG device (LKC Technologies, Inc., Gaithersburg, MD, USA), a modern portable ERG device that can facilitate screening for diseases involvi

Comparison of two sedation protocols for long electroretinography in horses using the Koijman electrode.

BACKGROUND: In modern times, horses are utilized not only for labour and transportation purposes but also for recreational activities such as competition and pleasure riding. In these various pursuits, the role of vision plays a crucial role. Electroretinography is the most used test to diagnose diseases of the retinal outer segment. There is a wide variety of devices to perform the electroretinography differing one from each other in the corneal electrode and the light stimulation. The Koijman electrode has been tested in dogs but not in horses. The main purpose of this study was to compare e

The Value of Electroretinography in Identifying Candidate Genes for Inherited Retinal Dystrophies: A Diagnostic Guide.

Inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) are a group of heterogeneous diseases caused by genetic mutations that specifically affect the function of the rod, cone, or bipolar cells in the retina. Electroretinography (ERG) is a diagnostic tool that measures the electrical activity of the retina in response to light stimuli, and it can help to determine the function of these cells. A normal ERG response consists of two waves, the a-wave and the b-wave, which reflect the activity of the photoreceptor cells and the bipolar and Muller cells, respectively. Despite the growing availability of next-generat

[Electroretinography in the evaluation of vitreoretinal proliferative changes due to penetrating shell injury to the eye].

The influence of vitreoretinal proliferative changes on retinal electrogenesis and glioneuronal relationships was studied in 41 patients with penetrating shell injury to the eye. The early data of studies indicated that there is a reduction in the hanz-feldt amplitude on an electroretinogram (ERG). According to the data of optic coherent tomography (OCT), this corresponds to an exudative reactive response and to the development of vitreoretinal tractional changes in the retina in the central zone and at the site of a foreign body. Retinal electrogenetic changes were most pronounced at months 1

Factors affecting the use of multifocal electroretinography to monitor function in a primate model of glaucoma.

While elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) undoubtedly plays a crucial role in many glaucoma patients, vascular dysregulation and chronic regional ischemia are also thought to contribute to the pathophysiology of glaucoma. In an effort to critically evaluate hypotheses involving vascular abnormalities in glaucoma, Cioffi, Van Buskirk and co-workers have developed a model of optic neuropathy based on chronic regional ischemia. The multifocal electroretinogram (MERG) has previously been used to assess function in non-human primates with experimental glaucoma induced by high-IOP. In this study, th

Electroretinography (ERG) alterations following positional changes in gas-filled eyes after a vitrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Recording electroretinograms (ERGs) in eyes with intraocular gas tamponade is difficult, and the mechanism remains unclear. We evaluated the effect of intraocular gas on ERGs by comparing recordings at different body positions. METHODS: This study included 31 patients who underwent vitrectomy with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) or air tamponade at Hirosaki University (between May 2023 and October 2024). The patients included those with retinal detachment (25 patients), macular holes (4 patients), and epiretinal membranes (2 patients). ERGs were recorded using skin electrodes when appro

Electronegative electroretinography in inherited retinal disease: a systematic review of genotype-phenotype correlations.

BACKGROUND: The electronegative electroretinogram (ERG)-in which the dark-adapted bright-flash b-wave amplitude falls below the a-wave (b: a ratio < 1.0)-localizes dysfunction to the inner retina or photoreceptor-bipolar synapse. In inherited retinal disease (IRD), this waveform has been associated with a restricted set of genetic etiologies, but the evidence has not been systematically synthesized. OBJECTIVE: To systematically identify and appraise the evidence on genetically confirmed IRD associated with electronegative ERG, characterizing reported gene-specific electrophysiologic patterns,

Clinical-electroretinography mismatch in a patient with non-syndromic BBS1-associated retinal degeneration.

A male patient in his late thirties, homozygous for the M390R Bardet-Biedl Syndrome-1 (BBS1) variant, began follow-up in early adulthood, due to decreased visual acuity and photophobia. Fundus examination showed bilateral temporal wedge-shaped pallor of the optic disc and atrophic maculopathy, translating into central hypoautofluorescence on fundus autofluorescence. Even though clinical and multimodal imaging features suggested cone-dominant degeneration, electroretinography (ERG) showed reduced scotopic and photopic responses, with greater scotopic impairment. Despite a thorough systemic eval

Verifying complaints of difficulties in night vision using electroretinography and dark adaptation tests.

PURPOSE: To determine the electroretinographical and psychophysical parameters that can help to verify patients' complaints of reduced night vision. METHODS: We tested 275 consecutive patients with normal appearing fundi, complaining of visual difficulties at night, using flash electroretinography (ERG) and dark adaptation (DA) test. Two ERG parameters were used to assess a scotopic retinal function: the amplitude of the response to dim blue flash (the rod response) and the b-wave ratio (measured/expected). Dark adaptation was measured with green- and red-light stimuli after exposure to a bri
