Thoracic epidural insertion using extended reality hologram assistance: a randomised trial of regional anaesthesia skill performance on the soft embalmed Thiel cadaver.

BACKGROUND: Medical extended reality projects a 3D digital image onto live surface anatomy via a wearable device while allowing operators to interact with the real world. We have developed a 3D hologram of the thoracic spine from CT images of a soft embalmed Thiel cadaver and visualised spinal anatomy through a Microsoft Hololens2 headset. The primary objective of this study was to test whether thoracic epidural training performance on the cadaver was improved using extended reality compared with the landmark insertion technique. METHODS: The study comprised psychometric evaluation of anaesth

Retrograde lymphatic pressure experiments on the human thoracic duct in Thiel embalmed specimens: Using short alternating pressure sequences, combined with microscopic video recordings.

BACKGROUND: More accurate data of the anatomical location of the lymphatic system in relation to the surrounding anatomy is required to optimize radiotherapy treatment planning. To accurately visualize/map these anatomical relationships in 3D, contrast agent needs to be injected into the lymphatic vessels, so they are visible on medical imaging data (CT/micro-CT). Retrograde lymphatic injections (injections against the lymphatic flow/valve direction) have theoretical advantages for lymphatic mapping studies, but more data on lymphatic vessel wall and valve behavior is needed to optimize retrog

Thiel embalming method used for anatomy dissection as an educational tool in teaching human anatomy, in research, and in training in comparison of different methods for long term preservation.

The use of human cadavers is beneficial in teaching gross human anatomy, training, and development in medicine. Fresh-frozen cadavers initially exhibit natural colour, tenderness, and flexibility. They also present innumerable difficulties, including the requirement of freezers for storage and a few weeks' work time because of fast decay. The risk of infection is also significant. A possible choice for fresh-frozen cadavers is embalmed cadavers. The requested characteristic needed for successful embalming is acceptable long-term structural preservation of organs and tissues with minimal deform

A New Method of Biostorage and Biopreservation for Human Amputated Extremities.

OBJECTIVES: We have explored a better method to preserve and store human medically amputated large size samples. The approach involved developing a special embalming solution and procedures for biopreservation and biostorage of a large-sized sample as a whole specimen rather than dissected small parts. Evaluation of the effect of our special embalming solution and procedures on whole human amputated extremities compared with excised small tissues was conducted. Histological and morphological techniques and elemental analyses were utilized to assess the effects of our new method using the speci

Ultrasound-guided serratus posterior superior muscle block: an anatomical study investigating the extent of injected dye and the mechanism of action of a simulated injection in Thiel soft-embalmed cadavers.

PURPOSE: The extent of local anesthetic spread and mechanism of action of serratus posterior superior muscle (SPSM) block is still debatable. This cadaveric study aimed to evaluate the anatomical spread of 30 or 20 mL of dye following a simulated SPSM block in Thiel soft-embalmed cadavers. METHODS: Simulated SPSM block injections were administered bilaterally in four cadavers (left side: 30 mL, right side: 20 mL). Anatomical dissection was performed to evaluate the extent of spread of the injected dye over the ribcage, and to document staining of the musculature of the back following a simula

Review of cadaver preservative solution from biomedical aspect.

The use of cadavers remains essential for medical students studying anatomy, as it provides irreplaceable hands-on experience. Given that the available cadavers must be reused over time, an effective preservation method is necessary to maintain tissue integrity. Formaldehyde-based solutions are commonly used in cadaver preservation due to their cost-effectiveness, practicality, and long-term tissue stability. However, given formaldehyde is carcinogenic and an irritant, it poses risks to both users and preserved cadavers. As a result, numerous studies have investigated cadaver embalming techniq

Tuberculosis risk in funeral home employees.

In order to estimate the risk of tuberculosis infection among employees in the funeral service industry, we conducted a risk-assessment study of a convenience sample of funeral home employees. Study participants completed a risk-assessment questionnaire and underwent tuberculin skin testing. Of 864 employees tested, 101 (11.7%) had a reactive tuberculin skin test. Reactivity to the tuberculin skin test was significantly associated with job category; funeral home employees with a present or past history of embalming deceased-human remains were twice as likely to be reactive as were non-embalmin

Comparison of Thiel-fixed and fresh-frozen temporal bon biomechanics with dynamic synchrotron-based X-ray imaging.

BACKGROUND: The Thiel embalming method offers lifelike tissue preservation, yet its suitability for biomechanical studies remains debated. METHODS: Here, we investigated two human temporal bones, one Thiel-fixed and one fresh-frozen, using dynamic synchrotron-based X-ray imaging under acoustic stimulation. FINDINGS: Both specimens exhibited a linear response at the umbo, but the Thiel-fixed specimen displayed discontinuity after the incudo-malleolar joint, suggesting ossicular chain stiffening. Our findings align well with previous studies indicating potential tissue degradation induced by T

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry with complementary ionization methods in the study of 5000-year-old mummy.

RATIONALE: Mummification is one of the defining customs of ancient Egypt. The nuances of the embalming procedure and the composition of the embalming mixtures have attracted the attention of scientists and laypeople for a long time. Modern analytical tools make mummy studies more efficient. METHODS: Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (GCxGC/HRMS) with complementary ionization methods (electron ionization, positive chemical ionization, and electron capture negative ionization [ECNI]) with a Pegasus GC-HRT+4D instrument was used to identify embalm

Flammability and combustion hazard of preserved human tissues.

Preservation techniques have evolved over the years to respond to the need of longer dissection periods, with formaldehyde being widely used for this purpose. In recent years, efforts have been focusing on reducing the health hazards of this fixative and the rigidity of the tissues embalmed with it. With every embalming technique that they are either developing or resurrecting from various protocols, institutions need to assess the fire and health hazards of all the chemicals being used. Compliance with the storage and handling safeguards listed in the Material Safety Data Sheet of each chemic

SARS-CoV-2 Transmission from Virus-Infected Dead Hamsters.

Although it has been 2.5 years since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic began, the transmissibility of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) from a dead infected body remains unclear, and in Japan, bereaved family members are often not allowed to view in person a loved one who has died from COVID-19. In this study, we analyzed the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 transmission from a dead body using a hamster model. We also analyzed the effect of "angel care"--in which the pharynx, nostrils, and rectum are plugged--and embalming on reducing transmissibility from de

Comparative histologic assessment of fetal cadaveric tissue preserved using the modified saturated salt solution.

INTRODUCTION: The modified saturated salt solution is currently used for embalming to improve the limitations of the existing saturated salt solution. However, the histological characteristics of cadaveric tissue embalmed with the modified saturated salt solution are unknown. Hence, the study examined the histological characteristics of cadaveric tissue embalmed with modified saturated salt solution, formaldehyde, and saturated salt solution. METHODS: A year-long experiment involved four groups of fetuses, each containing four, older than 28 weeks of gestational age. The first group was embal

In vitro reaction of barbiturates with formaldehyde.

Barbiturates are widely used as sedatives, hypnotics, and antiepileptics, and, when coupled with their narrow therapeutic index, the probability that their use will result in accidental or intentional death is significant. When barbiturates are implicated in a murder or suicide, analysis for their presence is often required. Under certain conditions, barbiturates are quite stable, but conditions found in vivo immediately after death or after embalming may promote barbiturate decomposition. If extensive decomposition occurs, analysis for them may be difficult or impossible. Here, the stability

Water-soluble dye staining of the flap nutrient artery and its perforator branch in cadavers embalmed using saturated salt solution and urea methods: does demonstration using a dye-stained cadaver increase a trainee's level of skill acquisition?

Cadaveric surgical training (CST) can safely improve surgical skill. Recently, various innovations have made surgical training more realistic. Saturated salt solution (SSS) and urea methods are useful for plastic surgery training, because they better preserve the color and texture of soft tissues than formalin fixation (FA). Microvessels are invisible to the naked eye, and in this study, we visualized skin perforators by injecting dye into the flaps of nutrient vessels during hand and foot surgery. During each CST session, the instructor used three cadavers for demonstration. From 2017 to 2021

Laparoscopic pectopexy: a follow-up cyclic biomechanical analysis determining time to functional stability.

INTRODUCTION: Pectopexy, a laparoscopic method for prolapse surgery, showed promising results in previous transient testing by this group. It was shown that a single suture, yielding an ultimate load of 35 N, was equivalent to continuous suturing. This was demonstrated in an in vitro cadaver study. This transient data were used to establish an elastic stress-strain envelope. It was now possible to proceed to dynamic in vitro analysis of this surgical method to establish time to functional stability. METHODS: Cyclic testing of this fixation method was performed on human female embalmed cadaver

Comparison of Haptic and Biometric Properties, Bacterial Load, and Student Perception of Fixative Solutions: Formaldehyde Versus Chilean Conservative Fixative Solution with and without Formaldehyde in Pig Kidneys.

One of the most widely used solutions to fix and preserve organic tissues is formaldehyde, despite reservations regarding its toxicity and the fact that formaldehyde-embalmed bodies lose their original characteristics. Anatomy laboratories have been replacing formaldehyde with solutions that retain the characteristics of fresh tissue. For this purpose, alternative solutions with a very low concentration of formaldehyde or without any formaldehyde have been analyzed. The objective of this study was to compare biometry, coloration, haptic properties, and bacterial load on animal specimens (pig k

Key Anatomical Clarifications for the Marginal Mandibular Branch of the Facial Nerve: Clinical Significance for the Plastic Surgeon.

BACKGROUND: The marginal mandibular branch (MMBr) of the facial nerve is the least likely to recover from injury due to infrequent anastomosis with other branches. The MMBr has been described as coursing superior to the inferior border of the mandible. However, studies have reported variations in its location in embalmed and fresh specimens. It has been postulated that the embalming process may effect its anatomic position. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to re-evalulate the location of the MMBr relative to the inferior border of the mandible in both fresh and embalmed cadavers, and inv
