Developing nursing interventions in Paediatric Emergence Delirium: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Children who experience Emergence Delirium following an anaesthetic are at an increased risk of injury, harm to the surgical site, delayed discharge from the recovery room/ post anaesthetic care unit, an increased length of stay in hospital, the requirement of additional nursing staff to care for them and may display additional emotional and behavioural upsets in the weeks following surgery. Many factors have been postulated to be associated with the development of Emergence Delirium in children. However, to date the strength and nature of these associations has not been thoroughly

Engaging nurses in patient recruitment to research trials in the emergency department.

Research is essential for the implementation of evidence-based practice and can lead to improvements and innovations in care delivery. Although ultimately beneficial for patients and staff, the data collection involved in research often presents challenges, particularly in the emergency department (ED) setting. This article describes the challenges of undertaking a feasibility trial in a city centre ED. The target research population were adult patients who presented to the ED with an issue related to opioid misuse, for example opioid overdose, injection site wounds and/or abscess, or injury s

Evaluating a medical directive for nurse-initiated analgesia in the Emergency Department.

OBJECTIVES: Although acute pain is a common presentation in the Emergency Department (ED), analgesics are often delayed until the patient is seen by a physician. We assessed the effect of a medical directive for nurse-initiated analgesia on time to first dose of analgesics, proportion of patients receiving analgesics in less than 30min, and total length of stay in the ED. METHODS: A medical directive for nurse-initiated analgesia was introduced in our ED in October 2011. This before-after health record review included all patients presenting to the ED with musculoskeletal back pain in 4month

What every emergency nurse needs to know about aspirin.

As the most commonly recommended medication in the world, aspirin is a medication with which emergency nurses are intimately familiar. Although this medication has been used for more than a century, health-care researchers are discovering new information about the utility of aspirin every year. Within this paper, we provide a review of recent findings related to the use of aspirin in the Emergency Department. In particular, we focus on understanding the pharmacokinetics of the medication as several drugs introduced in the past decade, interact with aspirin and create side effects harmful to pa
