Stand-alone Emollient Treatment Reduces Flares After Discontinuation of Topical Steroid Treatment in Atopic Dermatitis: A Double-blind, Randomized, Vehicle-controlled, Left-right Comparison Study.

Prevention of the flares is a main goal in the long-term treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). Therefore we investigated the efficacy of a water-in-oil emollient, containing licochalcone A, omega-6-fatty acids, ceramide 3 and glycerol, for prevention of the flares in adults with mild to moderately severe AD, treated with topical steroids, that led to clearing of the inflammatory lesions and had been discontinued prior to inclusion. The study was a 12-week, double-blind, randomized, vehicle-controlled, left-right comparison test with the number of relapses, defined as re-occurrence of erythema f

Study of the biochemical and kinetic properties of Candida antarctica lipase immobilized on magnetized poly(styrene-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) and the development of a mathematical model for emollient ester synthesis.

The present study aimed to develop a biocatalyst through the immobilization of Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) via physical adsorption onto magnetized poly(styrene-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (STY-EGDMA-M). Biochemical property characterization, apparent kinetic parameter determination, and thermal stability assessment were conducted using a methodology developed based on the hydrolysis of the ester methyl butyrate. The results demonstrated that immobilization expanded the enzyme's optimal pH range, with the best performance observed at pH 7.5 and 8, reaching approximately 730 U g⁻1.

Efficacy of topical 10% urea-based lotion in patients with ichthyosis vulgaris: a two-center, randomized, controlled, single-blind, right-vs.-left study in comparison with standard glycerol-based emollient cream.

BACKGROUND: Ichthyoses are genetic disorders of keratinization which are uncomfortable due to their conspicuous scaling, itching and cosmetic problems. Ichthyoses can lead to social discrimination and psychological problems. Ichthyosis vulgaris (IV) is the most common form of these geno-dermatoses. IV is a chronic disorder that often requires continuous therapy. Emollient and keratolytic products are the mainstay treatments of IV. It is important that efficient, safe and well tolerated therapies should be available. Direct comparative data regarding efficacy of different emollient products in

Comparison of different skin care regimens in patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis receiving systemic treatment: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Moderate to severe AD can be successfully managed by systemic treatments. Current guidelines also recommend emollients or emollients 'plus' and eudermic cleansers for all AD patients to improve the skin barrier and provide anti-irritant and anti-pruritic effects. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the efficacy of skin care (in addition to systemic treatment) with an Emollient 'plus' balm designed to improve the skin barrier and skin microbiome plus a corresponding syndet compared to usual commercial emollients and cleansers. METHODS: In a randomized controlled multicenter study, patients

Effects of topical corticosteroid and tacrolimus on ceramides and irritancy to sodium lauryl sulphate in healthy skin.

The skin barrier, located in the stratum corneum, is influenced mainly by the lipid and protein composition of this layer. In eczematous diseases impairment of the skin barrier is thought to be of prime importance. Topical anti-inflammatory drugs and emollients are the most widely used eczema treatments. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of topically applied corticosteroid, tacrolimus and emollient on stratum corneum lipids and barrier parameters. Nineteen healthy volunteers participated in the study. Both forearms of the subjects were divided into four areas, which were treated

Successful experimental treatment of congenital ichthyosis in an infant.

Ichthyosis is a rare genetic disease that causes defects in skin keratinisation. Infants born with this disease have tight shiny skin that inhibits limb and ear mobilities, eyelid and lip deformities and poor hair and nail growths. In addition, the barrier properties of the skin are disrupted, which leads to dehydration, body temperature regulation difficulties and increased susceptibility to infection. The treatments currently available include topical keratolytics, emollients, and for severe disease systemic retinoids. Given the increased permeability of the skin and increased body surface a

[Cutaneous hydration of the premature and new born].

The barrier function of the stratum corneum is a fundamental element in maintaining cutaneous hydration. Alteration in the stratum corneum leads to the loss of this barrier function, with increased transdermal water loss, decreased water content and installation of xerosis. Moisturizers correct cutaneous xerosis by restoring the stratum corneum. In the new born, the architectural and biochemical structure of the stratum corneum is identical to that of infants and adults. However, 60 p. cent of new born exhibit physiologic desquamation, demonstrating a transitory functional deficit in the strat

Dry skin management: practical approach in light of latest research on skin structure and function.

Dry skin is a common condition that is attributed to a lack of water in the stratum corneum. With the availability of new technologies, light has been shed on the pathophysiology of dry skin at the molecular level. With the aim to discuss implications of this latest research for the optimal formulation of emollients designed to treat dry skin, five specialists met in November 2017. Research on three topics thereby provided particularly detailed new insights on how to manage dry skin: research on the lipid composition and organization of the stratum corneum, research on natural moisturizing fac

Skin-centered strategies in food allergy prevention.

While the early introduction of food allergens in the infant diet has been shown to be effective at preventing the development of food allergy (FA), its implementation in real life has been associated with various challenges. Interventions aimed at correcting skin barrier dysfunction have been explored in recent decades as a distinct or complementary mean to prevent allergic sensitization through the skin and subsequent development of FA. Studies assessing the application of emollient from birth have yielded conflicting results, and meta-analyses have demonstrated either no effect or only a sl

Timing of Food Introduction and Allergy Prevention: An Update.

Recommendations about allergy prevention through diet are rapidly changing. In just the past several years, multiple organizations have provided updated guidance and recommendations about infant feeding based on recent studies and meta-analyses. In addition to the increased number of studies supporting the benefit of early introduction of allergenic foods, in particular peanut and egg, recent studies demonstrate that infant and maternal diet diversity may also reduce risk of food allergy and atopy. Skin emollients have not been found to be helpful in prevention of food allergy, and more eviden
