The present study examined contextual factors that affect safety behavior use as well as positive emotions when using safety behaviors among individuals with SAD. Eighty-eight participants took part in the study, half (n = 44) met diagnostic criteria for SAD and half (n = 44) did not meet criteria for SAD. Participants completed a 21-day experience sampling methodology (ESM) measurement in which they reported on daily social interactions, safety behavior use, and emotions. Using multilevel linear modeling we found that both individuals with and without SAD used more safety behaviors when inter

BACKGROUND: Typically-developing siblings of individuals with Down Syndrome often experience complex emotions towards their sibling. This study explored how social support, personal resources (optimism, sense of coherence [SOC]), and individual variables (sex, religious affiliation, siblings' functionality) may impact emerging adult siblings' emotions toward their sibling with Down Syndrome.
METHODS: Participants were 292 siblings of individuals with DS ranging in age from 18-27 (M=21.54, SD=2.50). Participants completed self-report questionnaires exploring optimism, SOC, support, and accepta

AIM: To better understand parents' beliefs about causation in cerebral palsy (CP) and the emotions related to those beliefs.
METHOD: We surveyed 226 parents of children with CP aged 1 to 18 years, recruited from the Victorian Cerebral Palsy Register, to evaluate their beliefs about the causes of CP, including genetic causes, causes specific to their own child, and their attitudes and emotions in relation to these.
RESULTS: Although 92% of participants reported that understanding the causes of their child's CP was important, uncertainty about the cause was expressed by 13%. The most frequentl

OBJECTIVE: Recently, many emotional diseases, such as anxiety and depression, have prevailed, and it is expected that emotional disease will be the leading cause of social and economic burden in 2030. These emotional diseases may be due to certain personality traits, which could be the reasons for the development of mental illness. Personality theories have been constantly developed over the past hundreds of years, and different dimensions of personality traits corresponding to different physiological bases and emotional feelings have been proposed. However, personality may be the least studie

Deficits in emotion processing are a core feature of schizophrenia, but their neurobiological bases are poorly understood. Previous research, mainly focused on emotional face processing and emotion recognition deficits, has shown controverted results. Furthermore, the use of faces has been questioned for not entailing an appropriate stimulus to study emotional processing. This highlights the importance of investigating emotional processing abnormalities using evocative stimuli. For the first time, we have studied the brain responses to scenic stimuli in patients with schizophrenia. We selected

Each year, hundreds of people in high-income countries take their own lives while they are in prison. Thousands engage in self-harm and thousands abuse other prisoners. Such behaviours often correlate with mental health problems, but they are also often pleas for help and for hope. Some courts have invoked the ideas of hope and the right to hope in the context of life imprisonment, but they have neither subjected the concept of hope to sustained analysis nor specified the role that hope should play in our practices of lawful punishment overall. This article offers a preliminary investigation o

Emotion socialization by parents contributes to children's trajectories of healthy and unhealthy emotional development, but there has been little research into the determinants and development of parental emotion socialization. We examined whether young children's anxious characteristics, including expressed anxiety with peers and low basal respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), predicted changes in mothers' and fathers' emotion socialization over the subsequent year. Using regression and regions of significance analyses, we observed that children's expressed anxiety moderated the stability of mo

Background: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue and cognitive difficulties. A person with FM suffers from pain diffused throughout the body, and accompanied by the feeling of exhaustion and concentration problems, which often impede even simple tasks. Many studies have shown that people with FM suffer from cognitive disorders, including memory disorders. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between fibromyalgia and cognitive functioning (direct memory, arbitrary attention, learning processes), emotional functi

Studying neurodegenerative diseases has greatly expanded our knowledge of language, speech and emotion as these diseases can affect areas not typically seen with stroke or tumor. Newer imaging techniques such as voxel based morphometry), fluorodeoxyglucose (F18) positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging have allowed localization of these deficits and a greater understanding of the language network targeted by these progressive neurodegenerative illnesses. This review illustrates these important points by describing five syndromes, using clinical cases and then noti

Human emotions are hypothetic constructs based on psychological and physiological data. According to the psychoevolutionnist theories, all emotions derive from a set of discrete basic emotions, common to human and animals, genetically determined. Basic emotions are thus considered as physiological processes based on specific neuronal circuits. On the contrary, for appraisal and social theories, emotions are psychological processes resulting from the cognitive appraisal of the stimulus-event for the well-being and objectives of the subject, and are of social origin. They develop during life, es

It has been suggested that a high tendency to ruminate presents a deficient emotion regulation. Past research found that people with high tendency to ruminate show sustained attention for negative stimuli and increased negative thinking, which may result in intensified experiences of negative emotions. Moreover, high level of rumination was associated with low emotional understanding. Accordingly, we hypothesized (1) high ruminators (HR) experience more intense emotional reactions than low ruminators (LR) for negative but not positive emotions, (2) LR have higher emotional clarity than HR, and

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal processes, anxiety and emotion regulation difficulties form a key part of conceptual models of eating disorders (EDs), such as anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), but the experimental findings to support this are limited.
METHOD: The Reading the Mind in the Eyes task, the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and a computerized pictorial (angry and neutral faces) Stroop task were administered to 190 women [50 with AN, 50 with BN and 90 healthy controls (HCs)].
RESULTS: Those with an ED showed attentional biases to faces in general (medium effec

BACKGROUND: Various studies highlight emotional symptoms as a crucial component of ADHD in adulthood, suggesting independent diagnostic approaches that incorporate patients' emotional experiences into the assessment. However, the emotional symptomatology appears to be defined differently within the disorder's different constructs: Emotional Dysregulation (ED), Emotional Lability (EL), Emotional Impulsiveness (EI) and Emotion (E). Hence, the question arises: Do these symptom domains represent the same psychopathological spectrum?
METHOD: A total of 1240 adults seeking diagnostic evaluation at

Understanding how one's actions affect others' emotions is an important aspect of prosocial development. Extending prior findings with adults, this study investigated whether predicting future emotional messages from the recipient could enhance preschoolers' altruistic sharing. In Experiment 1, 4- to 6-year-old Korean children played a dictator game in which they allocated stickers between themselves and a monkey puppet. The children in the experimental condition were informed that the monkey would draw a picture of how he felt about the number of stickers received, while those in the control

People may often attempt to support a loved one by changing how that loved one interprets a stressful situation (i.e., other-focused cognitive reappraisal). However, there are many specific ways in which a situation can be reframed, and while some reappraisal tactics may be effective, other tactics may be inert or possibly backfire-even when used with good intentions. We propose that it is useful to distinguish between decommitment tactics that involve decommitting from a previously held perspective (e.g., reducing severity: "It is not as bad as it seems"; situational acceptance: "It is out of

This systematic review, following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, analyzes scientific literature on bullying and cyberbullying among adolescents (aged 12-16) in educational settings, focusing on ICT, smartphone hyperconnectivity, and emotional education. An exhaustive search across Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Dialnet, CSIC, SciELO, and Google Scholar identified 34 empirical studies. A narrative synthesis was performed due to methodological heterogeneity. The synthesized evidence suggests that cyberbullying frequently acts as a persistent extension of school violence, where continuous digital expos

Studies on the development of sharing resources as one aspect of prosocial behavior have revealed that single recipient characteristics affect preschoolers' sharing decisions. In the current study, we investigated (a) whether preschoolers also take multiple recipient characteristics simultaneously into account and (b) whether preschoolers' general prosocial behavior affects their sharing decisions. A 2 (Friendship Status: friend vs. non-friend) × 2 (Emotional State of the Recipient: sad vs. happy) within-participants design was used. In the context of a dictator game, German preschoolers (N =

The study of animal emotion can be the source of much confusion and lack of clarity. Researchers may talk past each other when discussing their work, and communication with stakeholders can result in misunderstandings about what is actually being studied and what has been found out. Here, we identify some key challenges in studying animal emotion and offer ways forward for tackling them. We begin by considering the uses of, and debates about, terminology and definitions, offering a prescriptive, reinforcement-based definition that can facilitate empirical research. Highlighting difficulties en

Emotions powerfully, predictably, and pervasively influence decision making. The risk-as-feelings hypothesis states that two kinds of emotions are important in decision-making, anticipatory emotions and anticipated emotions. We empirically investigated whether and how anticipatory and anticipated emotions may change as a function of outcome values and whether anticipatory or anticipated emotions may explain the influence of outcome values on risky choice. To study the effects of value on emotions and choice, we offered people hypothetical large amounts ($100, $200, $300, $400) and incentivized
