[Employment after the first myocardial infarct and rehabilitation].

Which are the determinants of return to work in middle aged myocardial infarction patients? This question was analysed by means of a follow-up study on men between 1986 and 1992 (group 1: n = 64, age = 46.6 (+/- 5.4), 5-6 years follow-up; group 2: n = 36, age = 51.2 (+/- 7.5), 2 years follow up), all of whom underwent a cardiac rehabilitation program in our hospital. Our aim was to determine the predictive power of social and psychological as compared to cardiologic factors. These factors were operating under two relevant conditions: 1. relative social homogeneity of the samples; 2. rehabilita

Employment and low birth weight in black women.

Recent studies have not shown adverse effects of employment during pregnancy on the pregnancy outcome, but most have not successfully distinguished factors due to work-related physical and mental strain from differences in social, economic and cultural characteristics between employed and non-employed women. We analyzed data from the Alameda County Case-Control Study of Low Birth Weight to address the question of employment as a risk factor for low birth weight in more depth. Subjects in the study were singleton infants without congenital malformations born in 1987 to black or white, non-hispa

Interventions targeting young people not in employment, education or training (NEET) for increased likelihood of return to school or employment-A systematic review.

The present systematic review aims to identify, synthesize, and evaluate evidence of effects from interventions targeting youth not in education, employment, or training (NEET). We searched relevant multidisciplinary databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-randomized re-engagement trials. Primary outcomes were participation in education and employment, and training status. Secondary outcomes included changes in financial status, quality of life and well-being, social functioning, and physical, psychological, and behavioral outcomes. The Joanna Briggs Institute metho

New Linked Employee-Employer Data Show Workforce Composition Is Associated With Health Insurance Offers Among Small Employers.

Decades of research shows that small firms are much less likely to offer health insurance than large firms, but less is known about differences among small employers. We examine this issue using the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey-Insurance Component with Administrative Records (MEPS-ICAR), a unique employer-employee linked data set that is constructed by matching the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey-Insurance Component (MEPS-IC) to Internal Revenue Service administrative records and the Decennial Census. Multivariate analyses show that among firms with fewer than 50 workers, the probability

Diagnosing employability: neurodiversity and the expansion of diagnosis into the workplace.

This paper analyses the workplace as a critical site where overdiagnosis is institutionally reconfigured. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in three workspaces hosting technology startups and creative agencies in Lisbon, Portugal, including participant observation and in-depth interviews with twelve neurodivergent employees and three HR managers, the paper traces how the neurodiversity movement's ethos of "difference, not deficit" is absorbed into organisational governance. It explores how initiatives framed as inclusive often intensify institutional demands for formal diagnosis as a prerequis

The Impact of Incarceration on Employment, Earnings, and Tax Filing.

We study the effect of incarceration on wages, self-employment, and taxes and transfers in North Carolina and Ohio using two quasi-experimental research designs: discontinuities in sentencing guidelines and random assignment to judges. Across both states, incarceration generates short-term drops in economic activity while individuals remain in prison. As a result, a year-long sentence decreases cumulative earnings over five years by 13%. Beyond five years, however, there is no evidence of lower employment, wage earnings, or self-employment in either state, as well as among defendants with no p

Reflection for Employability in First Opinion Veterinary Practice.

Students and practising vets are required to reflect as part of professional development. This qualitative study explored what prompts reflection and how reflection developed employability skills. Employability incorporates technical competencies and career satisfaction, an important issue relating to career longevity and retention in the profession. This study could inform teaching and assessment on reflection and employability attainment in undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. Semi-structured interview data were analysed via thematic analysis. The epistemological approach was constructi

The impact of vestibular schwannoma and its management on employment.

BACKGROUND: Employment is an important factor in quality of life. For vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients, employment is not self-evident, because of the sequelae of the disease or its treatment and their effects on daily life. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed employment status, sick leave (absenteeism) and being less productive at work (presenteeism) in the long-term follow-up of VS patients, and evaluated the impact of treatment strategy (active surveillance, surgery or radiotherapy). METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study was performed in a tertiary university hospital in the Netherlands.

Estimating the economic burden of migraine on US employers.

Migraine is a leading cause of disability globally. Individuals with migraine experience reduced work productivity and greater health care costs compared with the general population. The Migraine Impact Model (MIM) is an interactive calculator developed to estimate the economic burden of migraine on United States-based employers. We demonstrate use of the model with 4 case studies from different industries (education, manufacturing, retail/trade, and entertainment). The MIM estimates migraine prevalence among employees and the employer's annual migraine-associated costs by applying published,

Stakeholder Perspectives on IPS for Employment: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND.: Individual Placement and Support (IPS) has demonstrated effectiveness in achieving competitive employment for people with severe mental illness. Yet limited efforts have been made to synthesize the literature pertaining to the experiences and perspectives of key stakeholders regarding IPS, which could be helpful for occupational therapists, given their role in vocational rehabilitation. PURPOSE.: To synthesize qualitative literature to understand how stakeholders (including occupational therapists) experience and perceive IPS and consider the implications for future occupational

Working in temporary employment and exposure to musculoskeletal constraints.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, temporary work (TW) has increased in European countries due to the greater uncertainty in the economy. AIMS: To compare the prevalence of non-specific musculoskeletal symptoms of the upper extremities (UEMSDs) and their main risk factors in blue-collar workers employed through temporary agencies (TW) and in those in permanent employment (PE). METHODS: UEMSDs occurring during the preceding 7 days were assessed using a Nordic questionnaire completed by 1493 blue-collar workers randomly included in a surveillance programme for UEMSDs (171 in TW and 1322 in PE) in a

A community study of depression treatment and employment earnings.

OBJECTIVE: Although treatment for major depression has been shown to reduce the costs of lost earnings resulting from lost work days, research has not demonstrated whether the reduction fully offsets the costs of treatment for the disorder. METHODS: A statewide cohort of community residents with recent major depression, dysthymia, or substantial depressive symptoms was recruited and interviewed at baseline and at six-month and 12-month follow-ups. The cost of lost earnings was measured by lost work days multiplied by subjects' wage rates. Cost of treatment for depression was approximated usin

[The employment schedule act--effects on the young surgeon].

Since 1. 1. 96, new regulations of working hours have been introduced in our hospital with regard to emergency service and compensation through leisure time. The average payment was reduced by 23% for surgeons on call. By this means, three additional surgeons could be employed. For every resident in training there is now less time for his residency than before. Sufficient surgical residency requires enough time on the ward and in the operating room. Thus, other conditions for residency programs are necessary to avoid unfulfilled tasks being pushed into the pre-existing area of non-documented w
