The authors report a 61-year-old man with chronic viral encephalitis and Koshevnikov syndrome occurring 42 months after initial symptom of right hemiparesis. Serial computed tomography of the brain showed changes in the attenuation of the left temporal lobe lesion over time. Magnetic resonance images of the brain showed enlargement of left temporoparietooccipital lobes with cortical gyral enhancement on T1-weighted images following intravenous administration of gadolinium-DTPA. 99mTc-HMPAO single-photon emission computerized tomography showed increased radioactivity and hyperperfusion in the l

Japanese encephalitis virus antigens were immunohistochemically demonstrated in formalin-fixed paraffin sections from an autopsied brain. Glial nodules were always associated with antigen-positive cell debris. Glia shrubs in the cerebellar cortex appeared to be formed along the apical dendrite of Purkinje cells. Most, but not all, of the neurons involved in neuronophagia were viral antigen positive. Antigenic masses were occasionally encountered in the center of so-called acellular plaques. Neurons with strong viral antigens were sporadically found in normal-appearing regions in the thalamus a

BACKGROUND: Suid herpesvirus type 1 (SHV1) is a type of neurotropic virus able to infect various species. However, the clinical cases of human SHV1 encephalitis are still rarely reported, and the clinical characteristics, treatment, and prognosis of human SHV1 encephalitis are still unclear.
METHODS: In this study, we reported 2 cases of human encephalitis associated with SHV1 infection and reviewed the other 18 cases from the literatures. A total of 20 cases with human SHV1 encephalitis were summarized and re-analyzed.
RESULTS: Nineteen of 20 patients had a history of swine-related occupati

A severe, often fatal encephalitis needs to be extensively and carefully clarified, especially when it occurs in a patient weeks or months after an organ transplantation. If the donor was viremic at the time of the organ removal or living viruses were present in the organ tissue, many viruses can be transferred to the organ recipient. This has been repeatedly reported in recent years and decades. In this overview rabies is discussed as a particularly important form of viral encephalitis, which is transferred via organs and always has a fatal outcome, because patients carry a high risk of infec

Metagenomic sequencing is a powerful technique that enables detection of the full spectrum of pathogens present in any specimen in a single test. Hence, metagenomics is increasingly being applied for detection of viruses in clinical cases with suspected infections of unknown etiology and a large number of relevant potential causes. This is typically the case in patients presenting with encephalitis, in particular when immunity is impaired by underlying disorders. In this study, viral metagenomics has been applied to a cohort of hematological patients with encephalitis of unknown origin. Becaus

Nine patients with acute viral encephalitis were diagnosed by CT. Seven had herpes simplex and two had nonherpetic acute viral encephalitis. All patients with herpes simplex encephalitis initially were febrile. They developed confusion and seizures. Five had focal neurological deficit and two had papilledema. The CT scan showed an abnormality on the initial CT in 6 of 7 cases. In one case initial CT study was normal; however follow-up scan (performed 5 days later) showed a definite abnormality. CT showed the characteristic pattern of herpes simplex encephalitis in all cases. This is a temporal

Background & objectives Acute encephalitic syndrome (AES), encompasses a wide spectrum of potential causes, clinical presentations, and outcomes. While infectious encephalitis is generally considered more prevalent, autoimmune encephalitis is emerging as a significant aetiology. Neuronal autoantibodies have been identified independently or in association with acute viral encephalitis. The primary objective of this study was to ascertain the prevalence and clinical manifestation of autoimmune encephalitis as well as of coexisting viral markers in children with AES. Methods This study was a pros

Mitophagy is a selective type of autophagy that removes damaged mitochondria to maintain mitochondrial homeostasis and regulate the antiviral immune response. Despite increasing evidence that herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection causes mitochondrial damage, the regulatory mechanisms governing mitochondrial homeostasis and its biological implications in the context of HSV-1 infection and viral encephalitis remain unclear. In our recent work, we find that HSV-1 infection causes the accumulation of damaged mitochondria via defective mitophagy in vitro and in brain tissue of mice. The vir

Viral encephalitis is a rare but serious complication after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The nonspecific early signs and symptoms and rapid progression can make it difficult to diagnose and treat in a timely fashion. To better inform clinical decision making in post-HCT viral encephalitis, a systematic review of prior studies of viral encephalitis was performed, with the goal of characterizing the frequency of various infectious etiologies and their clinical course, including treatments and outcomes. A systematic review of studies of viral encephalitis was performed. Studies were

Tick-Borne Encephalitis - Viral Transmission and Considerations for Vaccination Abstract. Tick-Borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a flavivirus transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of infected Ixodes ticks. Infection with TBEV results in Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE), an acute disease of the Central Nervous System (CNS) that can lead to significant long-term sequalae. Over the last decades the geographic range of TBEV and the incidence of TBE have substantially increased. TBEV is now endemic through much of Central Europe, including parts of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and is

Autoimmune glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) astrocytopathy is a novel autoimmune disease. This is the first report of a case of autoimmune GFAP astrocytopathy after herpes simplex viral encephalitis (HSVE). A 35-year-old female patient presented with a combination of headache, fever, seizure and psychiatric/behavioral abnormalities. She had GFAP-IgG in both serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with gadolinium-enhancement revealed linear enhancement oriented radially to the ventricles. After treatment with corticosteroids, her symptoms were alleviated, the

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a mosquito-borne zoonotic flavivirus, is an enveloped positive-strand RNA virus that can cause a spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from mild febrile illness to severe neuroinvasive disease. Today, several killed and live vaccines are available in different parts of the globe for use in humans to prevent JEV-induced diseases, yet no antivirals are available to treat JEV-associated diseases. Despite the progress made in vaccine research and development, JEV is still a major public health problem in southern, eastern, and southeastern Asia, as well as

The early diagnosis of herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSVE) enables induction of antiviral therapy in this potentially life-threatening disease. The study aimed to determine clinical findings including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) data and MRI imaging in HSVE patients and to identify features distinguishing HSVE from encephalitis of other viral etiologies. We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients who were diagnosed with viral encephalitis between 2000 and 2014 at the University Hospital Halle. Forty-nine patients with viral encephalitis were identified. A viral etiology could be confi

The outbreak of human arboviral encephalitis attributable to a mosquito-transmitted West Nile-like virus (WNLV) continues to wane in the Northeast. As of October 5, the number of laboratory-positive cases had increased to 50 (27 confirmed and 23 probable), including five deaths. The increase in cases is mainly a result of completed retesting with West Nile virus antigen of specimens previously tested with the related St. Louis encephalitis virus antigen and to intensive retrospective case finding in the ongoing epidemiologic investigations.
