Endocrine diseases and the liver.

Liver disease and endocrine disorders, both common in the general population, have a bidirectional and complex relationship. Certain liver diseases are more commonly associated with endocrine disorders, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, and primary biliary cirrhosis. There may be an association between hepatitis C and type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as thyroid disorders, and sex hormonal preparations may cause specific hepatic lesions. The presence of relative adrenal insufficiency in patients with end-stage liver disease may have therapeutic implications in pa

[Cutaneous signs of endocrinopathies].

Some cutaneous lesions accompany or reveal endocrine disorders. Identifying the endocrinopathy is very important because it sometimes allows corrective rather than symptomatic treatment. The most frequenly involved diseases include thyrotoxicosis, hypothyroidism, the auto-immune disorders of thyroid, Cushing syndrome, Addison disease, acromegaly, androgen-dependent disorders, hypopituitarism, hypoparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism and diabetes mellitus.

Endocrine disease.

The effects of endocrine disease on bone mass continue to attract attention. Investigations include the effects on the skeleton of thyroid disease, primary hyperparathyroidism, and their treatment. The effect of growth hormone replacement in adults with panhypopituitarism has also been investigated; children with treated growth hormone deficiency appear to reach adulthood with low bone mass. The indications for surgery in asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism have recently been reviewed. The associations between autoimmune thyroid disease and connective tissue disease have been investigated

Allotriophagy And Allotriodipsia In Endocrinology.

Allotriophagy is defined as food cravings that are different from the expected or the norm. It gives clinical pointers to an underlying diagnosis. We propose a new term, allotriodipsia which suggests a preference for beverages that are different from the norm. Taken together, these two entities may point towards certain endocrinological abnormalities and iatrogenic sequelae. In this communication we highlight the clinical relevance of allotriophagy and allotriodipsia.

Endocrine late effects of cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine disorders are one of the common late complications of cancer treatment in childhood and adulthood. The incidence is more common in individuals who underwent oncology treatment in childhood in whom the estimated prevalence of these disorders is 20-50%. With improving treatment, there is an increasing number of people with a history of cancer treatment and thus persons who are potentially at risk of developing endocrine disorders. In adults, the prevalence of disorders is lower compared to those who had treatment in their childhood; however, endocrinological complications a

Endocrine diseases as causes of secondary hyperlipidemia.

Cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of increased morbidity and mortality in developed and developing countries. One of the most important risk factors responsible for atherosclerosis and subsequent cardiovascular diseases is hyperlipidaemia. Currently, hyperlipidaemias are divided into several clinical entities. The greatest risk is associated with hypercholesterolaemia. As a result, modern guidelines for the treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis focus predominantly on the reduction of LDL-cholesterol. Hypertriglyceridaemia and atherogenic dyslipidaemia, which are respon

Evaluation and management of endocrine dysfunction in fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia-like symptoms such as muscle pain and tenderness, exhaustion, reduced exercise capacity, and cold intolerance, resemble symptoms associated with endocrine dysfunction like hypothyroidism, and adrenal or growth hormone insufficiency. To investigate the potential of management of endocrine abnormalities for relieve of symptoms of patients with fibromyalgia, we reviewed experimental and clinical studies of endocrine functioning and endocrine treatment. Serum GH, androgen, and 24-hour urinary cortisol levels of patients with fibromyalgia tend to be in the lower part of the normal rang

Endocrine abnormality in paraneoplastic syndrome.

Paraneoplastic syndromes denote rare but notable phenomena caused by the tumour mediated release of bioactive substances. Peptide and non-peptide hormone causes are explored with a particular focus on pathogenesis, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Early detection and management of paraneoplastic syndromes can improve morbidly and mortality; definitive treatment remains effective surgical or anti-tumour therapies. Pituitary autoimmunity may provide a novel presentation of paraneoplastic syndromes for which further research is warranted.

[Congenital and endogenous endocrine myopathy].

Disorders in endocrinological pathways rarely lead to manifest acquired or endogenous myopathy so that an interdisciplinary evaluation between neurology and endocrinology is essential for these disorders. Asymptomatic or forme fruste variants may be more common and even underdiagnosed in these circumstances. Dysbalance disorders of protein synthesis, electrolytes and carbohydrates can lead to several rare forms of myopathy due to the dependence on hormonal metabolism. In general, the main neuromuscular symptom is proximal weakness, sometimes in addition to myalgia and muscle atrophy. Endocrine

Celiac disease-associated autoimmune endocrinopathies.

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder induced by gluten intake in genetically susceptible individuals. It is characterized by the presence of serum antibodies to endomysium, reticulin, gliadin, and tissue transglutaminase. The incidence of CD in various autoimmune disorders is increased 10- to 30-fold in comparison to the general population, although in many cases CD is clinically asymptomatic or silent. The identification of such cases with CD is important since it may help in the control of type I diabetes or endocrine functions in general, as well as in the prevention of long-term c

[Autoimmune mechanisms in endocrinology--the polyglandular autoimmune endocrine syndrome].

Autoimmune endocrinopathies belong to so-called organ specific autoimmune diseases. These diseases combine very often and from the polyglandular autoimmune endocrine syndrome (PAES), where autoantibodies either destroy or stimulate individual endocrine glands or hormone receptors in target tissues. Thus a wide range of combinations of hypofunctional or hyperfunctional clinical syndromes develops. PAES is a good natural model of endocrine polyautoaggressiveness. In its development the following aetiopathogenetic factors participate: 1. Hereditary familial disposition, expressed e.g. by certain

Endocrine myopathies.

The atrophy produced by endocrine disorders is primarily due to alterations in protein and carbohydrate metabolism. Type II muscle fibers are more severely affected than are Type I fibers. Steroid myopathy and the myopathy associated with excess ACTH have a typical pattern of proximal weakness affecting the legs more than the arms. Steroid myopathy is usually not apparent until other signs of glucocorticoid excess are present. Treatments of steroid myopathy are as follows: Lower the dose of steroid, use a nonfluorinated glucocorticoid, and exercise or physical therapy. Adrenal insufficiency pr

[Interrelations of disorders of the endocrine and immune systems of patients with malignant melanoma].

Investigations of endocrine and immune systems in melanoma patients gave evidence that such patients develop disorders of functions between thymus, on the one hand, and those of the pineal gland, pituitary, adrenal cortex and gonads, on the other, which are important in the pathogenesis of alterations in cell-mediated and humoral immune responses. The author recommends the administration to melanoma patients of either preparations of thymus itself or those with thymosin-like activity, as well as biologically active factors of the pineal gland which normalize metabolic changes in the body.

Hypoprolactinemia, a neglected endocrine disorder.

This special issue of Reviews in Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders is dedicated to hypoprolactinemia. Prolactin is known for its actions on the mammary gland including development, preparation for postpartum lactation, as well as synthesis and maintenance of milk secretion. However, prolactin has many other physiological effects on reproduction, embryonic and fetal development, homeostasis, neuroprotection, behavior, and immunoregulation. In clinical practice, physiopathology and clinical consequences of increased prolactin secretion are generally well understood, and medical treatment to decr

[Hypopituitarism].

In recent years, the role ofimmune checkpoint inhibitors(ICIs)has become crucial in cancer therapy. However, ICIs are known to trigger a wide variety of autoimmune side effects, termed immune-related adverse events(irAEs), which can influence multiple organs. Hypophysitis induced by ICIs, which is defined as the inflammation of the pituitary gland and is the cause ofhypopituitarism, is one ofthe important toxicities, because it can be life-threatening event when it is not diagnosed or managed properly. Therefore, ICIs-induced hypophysitis should be recognized as one ofthe oncologic emergencies

[Immunotherapy-induced endocrinopathies: Insights from the 2018 French Endocrine Society Guidelines].

The management of cancer patients has changed due to the considerably more frequent use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICPI). However, the use of ICPI has a risk of side-effects, particularly endocrine toxicity. Since the indications for ICPI are constantly expanding due to their efficacy, it is important that endocrinologists and oncologists know how to look for this type of toxicity and how to treat it when it arises. In view of this, the French Endocrine Society initiated the formulation of a guidance document on ICPI-related endocrine toxicity. In this paper, we summarize the main insigh

[Causes and Abnormal Lipid Laboratory Values of Secondary Hyperlipidemia: Endocrine Disease].

Secondary hyperlipidemia is common and occurs frequently in patients with endocrine disease such as hy- pothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, and acromegaly, metabolic disease such as diabetes mellitus, renal dis- ease such as nephrotic syndrome and chronic renal failure, liver disease such as obstructive liver disease, and as a side-effect of glucocorticoids and estrogens. The underlying cause of high serum lipid levels will often be missed if it is not actively sought. We describe. the causes and abnormal lipid laboratory values of sec- ondary hyperlipidemia in endocrine disease patients such as
