Parasitic contamination of surface waters, especially recreational waters, is a serious problem for under-developed nations like Pakistan, where numerous outbreaks of parasitic diseases are reported each year. In the current study, parasitic presence in two surface waters (Hanna Lake and Wali-Tangi Dam) of Quetta was monitored quarterly for 1 year. The methodology involved the pre-concentration of the water samples and the subsequent preparation for the microscopic search of parasites. Physico-chemical and bacteriological variables were also studied. Wet staining, modified Trichrome staining,

OBJECTIVE: Determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitism and associated factors in indigenous children between 5 and 14 years, living in the city of Cali, Colombia.
METHODOLOGY: 63 children aged 5 to 14 were included. At least two fecal samples were taken to which two different tests were applied, first one directly and the other one for concentration: Ziehl-Neelsen modified and Kato Katz. In order to collect socio-demographic and epidemiological interest data, a survey was done. The results of the survey were compared through a process of observation at 50.0 % of the minors' homes. In a cross-sectional study, the prevalences of intestinal parasitic infection and the associated risk factors were explored among children aged 0-10 years attending outpatient clinics in Manaus, the capital city of the north Brazilian state of Amazonas. Data indicating socio-economic level and demographic factors were collected in interviews with the accompanying parent or guardian of each child. Parasitic infections were detected by the microscopical examination of faecal samples, while nutritional status was categorized by reference to the growth curves published by the U.S. National Center

Patients undergoing haemodialysis are known to have compromised immune function, which can increase their susceptibility to infections, including intestinal parasitic diseases. These infections can manifest more severely in this population. Typically, the immune response to parasitic infections involves a shift from a Th1-dominant response-more effective against intracellular pathogens-to a Th2-dominant response, which promotes eosinophilia and IgE production. Participants were categorised into eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic groups based on eosinophil counts (< 10 cells/mL). T-bet and GATA-

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal parasitic infections represent a public health problem, especially among vulnerable populations. There are few studies on the prevalence and determinants of intestinal parasites infections in street dwellers, who may experience significant health and socioeconomic implications. Understanding the prevalence and associated factors of intestinal parasites in this population is crucial for targeted interventions to mitigate the spread of these infections.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in street dwellers attending a shelter in Cali, Colombi

OBJECTIVE: The aim is to emphasise the importance for intestinal parasites' diagnosis by direct microscopic examination and the discrepancies among results from different microscopists.
METHODS: Stool specimens were obtained from 225 children with diarrhoea after the macroscopic examination, prepared by formalineether sedimentation methods and included in microscopically examination by three different independent investigators (parasitologist, microbiologist, research assistant). Furthermore, specimens were stained with the modified Ehrlich Ziehl Neelsen method and evaluated for Cryptosporidi

Chronic renal insufficiency disease (CRI) leads to uremia in hemodialysis patients and induces a state of immunodepression that results in higher frequencies of infections and diarrhea. Hemodialysis patients resident in the city of Campo Mourão, Paraná, Brazil were analyzed from April 2006 through September 2007 for Blastocystis sp. and other intestinal parasites and for associated diarrhea. Fecal samples from 86 hemodialysis patients and 146 healthy (reference) persons were examined by standard methods for detecting ova, larvae and cysts, which included preservation in 10% formalin and the Ki

Protozoa, nematodes, and platyhelminths are of clinical interest due to their role on the modulation of the immune responses. To determine the frequency of infection by intestinal parasites as well as the status of single or mixed infection (coinfection) and its relation with inflammation and intestinal permeability markers in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a cross-sectional study was conducted in 18 women diagnosed with RA. A fecal sample of each participant was analyzed for parasitic identification. The DAS28-erythrocyte sedimentation rate score, as well as the serum levels of TNF-

The classic presentation of acute gastrointestinal (GI) parasitic infection including fever, diarrhea, nausea, and/or abdominal pain is not always a reliable measure. In these cases, parasitic infections require sensitive stool testing to be identified and treated effectively. The standard practice for stool analysis typically requires 3 separate stool specimens to be collected on 3 separate days to overcome the possibility of misdiagnosis due to intermittent shedding. Nonetheless, this practice is not often utilized due to very short periods of sample viability, which often leads to patient m

BACKGROUND: Enteral parasitic diseases are a public health problem in nations with low economic development and in settings with poor sanitation. Amebiasis is the second most frequent form of parasitosis, with a high burden of disease. Knowledge of the prevalence of enteroparasitoses in a given region is useful for planning clinical decision-making. Thus, the aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of enteral parasitic diseases, especially amebiasis, through analysis on stool samples from public and private laboratories in a metropolitan area in southeastern Brazil.

During a 4-year-period, more than 500 ostriches and several rheas, all born in European countries and raised in Spain and Portugal, have been analyzed for the presence of ectoparasites and endoparasites. A total of 29 parasite species have been found, most of them of the gastrointestinal tract. Some of the helminth species found may represent spureous parasitosis, as only the eggs (of an ascarid and a trematode) were found in some samples. From the organisms identified, the ectoparasites (lice-Struthiolipeurus rheae, S. nandu; mites-Dermoglyphus pachycnemis, Gabucinia bicaudata), helminths (ce
