Rats were injected daily, five days/week, with 0.6 mg Cd/kg as CdCl2 for eight weeks. Groups of rats were sacrificed weekly. Urine, plasma and tissue cadmium levels, and morphology of renal cortex were studied. No abnormal effects were found until the fifth or sixth week when cadmium in kidney reached about 100 micrograms/g tissue. At this time, renal tubular lining cells showed an increase in lysosomes, microbodies and smooth endoplasmic reticulum and a low molecular weight cadmium-binding species was detectable in plasma. Electron microscopy revealed changes in Sertoli cells of the scrotal testes of unilaterally cryptorchid West African dwarf goats from neonate to maturity. The major changes included alteration of the cell shape due to proliferation of the spermatogenic cells, development of nucleolar vesicles and indentations of nuclear outlines, and profusion of smooth endoplasmic reticulum. These alterations are similar to those described for the differentiation of Sertoli cells in normal testis.

The fine structure is illustrated of plasma cells containing Russell bodies. The material is from chronic inflammatory cell infiltrates in human gastric mucosa and thyroid glands in Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It is noted that the Russell bodies lie in distended cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum and are easily distinguished from less electron-dense ;secretory granules' covered by a smooth membrane that are situated in the Golgi complex.

The ultrastructure of interdigitating dendritic cells in dermatopathic lymphadenopathy from patients with mycosis fungoides was investigated. The most remarkable findings were: a marked hypertrophy of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum with a peculiar concentric arrangements of the cisternae around lipid droplets, an abundance of cytoplasmic lipid droplets and the presence of paranuclear chromatoid-like bodies. It is suggested that these ultrastructural features may correspond to some unknown functional capability of the interdigitating dendritic cell.

BACKGROUND: NADPH Oxidase 5 (Nox5) is a calcium-sensitive superoxide-generating Nox. It is present in lower forms and higher mammals, but not in rodents. Nox5 is expressed in vascular cells, but the functional significance remains elusive. A 1.5-year-old Holstein heifer had a subcutaneous tumor mass (20 cm diameter) on the ventral portion of the neck, and the tumor was diagnosed as a locally invasive myofibroblastoma. It consisted of moderately cellular fibrous tissue, and the interlobular septum of the thymus was invaded by tumor cells. The neoplastic cells were positive for alpha smooth muscle actin and vimentin, but not for desmin. A study of epiphyseal cartilage in two children presenting with all the clinical and radiologic features of the dysplasia spondylo-epiphysealis congenita showed abnormalities different from those usually described. In addition to dilatations of the endoplasmic reticulum, there were two types of inclusions observed in the chondrocytes, granules and spirilla, which were limited by a smooth membrane. The intercellular matrix consisted of a dense tangle of fine fibers and numerous dense granules. These findings suggest a heterogeneity for this disease.

Localization of acetylcholinesterase activity in congenital megacolon was studied by light and electron microscopy. Acetylcholinesterase activity was strongly positive at the light microscopic level in the Auerbach's plexus of the normal segment and in proliferated nerve fibers of the aganglionic segment.
