Procedural and clinical outcomes of endovascular recanalization therapy in patients with cancer-related stroke.

Objective Embolism due to coagulopathy might be the main pathomechanism underlying cancer-related stroke (CRS). CRS patients with a large artery occlusion could be candidates for endovascular recanalization therapy (ERT), although its procedural and clinical outcomes are not well known. This study aimed to investigate the procedural and clinical outcomes of ERT in CRS patients and the characteristics associated with outcomes compared with those of conventional stroke patients. Methods A registry of consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients who underwent ERT between January 2011 and October 20

[Procedure selection of left subclavian artery revascularization in thoracic endovascular aortic repair].

In order to require ideal proximal landing zone and durable long-term outcome, it is necessary to reconstruct the left subclavian artery(LSA) blood supply as much as possible in thoracic aortic endovascular repair(TEVAR). With the advent and progress of diverse assisted techniques and devices, several procedures for the reconstruction of the left subclavian artery have been developed and widely utilized, including surgical LSA bypass or transposition, chimney technique, periscope technique, fenestration and branched stent-graft, which have expanded the proximal landing zone and widened the ind

A new technique to enhance endovascular thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm therapy--the sandwich procedure.

Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) is a life-threatening condition with a potentially high risk of rupture (46% to 74%) when left untreated. Mean elective surgical mortality rate is 6.6% at best, rising to 47% for emergency operations. Standard thoracic endovascular repair alone is not currently considered an adequate approach to treat TAAA because of the visceral arteries involved by the aneurysm sac. A hybrid procedure and other complex endovascular techniques (eg, chimney graft, fenestrated and side-branched modular endograft systems) have been developed, but results are still conflict

Safety and effectiveness of single ProStyle™/ProGlide™ for aortic endovascular procedures: single-style study.

BACKGROUND: The Perclose ProStyle™/ProGlide™ Suture-Mediated Closure and Repair (SMCR) System is designed to close the common femoral artery (CFA) access during percutaneous endovascular procedures. Instructions for use (IFU) recommend the use of at least two devices, per single access, and the pre-close technique for arterial sheath sizes greater than 8 F. Besides, recent clinical studies suggest that a single ProStyle™/ProGlide™ pre-implantation can safely close percutaneous access for larger diameters. AIM: The purpose of this study was to analyse the efficacy of a single pre-implanted Pro

Endovascular procedures cause transient endothelial injury but do not disrupt mature neointima in Drug Eluting Stents.

Extensive application of coronary intravascular procedures has led to the increased need of understanding the injury inflicted to the coronary arterial wall. We aimed to investigate acute and prolonged coronary endothelial injury as a result of guidewire use, repeated intravascular imaging and stenting. These interventions were performed in swine (N = 37) and injury was assessed per coronary segment (n = 81) using an Evans Blue dye-exclusion-test. Scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy were then used to visualize the extent and nature of acute (<4 hours) and prolonged (5 days) endot

Endovascular procedures in patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: a review of clinical outcomes and iatrogenic complications.

BACKGROUND: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a hereditary connective tissue disorder caused by mutations in genes involved with collagen matrix formation that results in weakened blood vessels. Endovascular therapy on patients with EDS is fraught with concerns of vessel dissection and access site complications. We describe the technical and clinical outcomes of patients with EDS who have undergone a range of endovascular procedures. METHODS: Patients with EDS undergoing endovascular procedures at a single-institution academic center between 1994 and 2010 were retrospectively reviewed. Perioper

Identification of skills common to renal and iliac endovascular procedures performed on a virtual reality simulator.

INTRODUCTION: There is a learning curve in the acquisition of endovascular skills for the treatment of vascular disease. Integration of Virtual reality (VR) simulator based training into the educational training curriculum offers a potential solution to overcome this learning curve. However evidence-based training curricula that define which tasks, how often and in which order they should be performed have yet to be developed. The aim of this study was to determine the nature of skills acquisition on the renal and iliac modules of a commercially-available VR simulator. METHOD: 20 surgical tra
