Association between Initial Opioid Prescription and Patient Pain with Continued Opioid Use among Opioid-Naïve Patients Undergoing Elective Surgery in a Large American Health System.

There is growing concern about the over-prescription of opioids and the risks of long-term use. This study examined the relationship between initial need (pre-operative, post-operative, and discharge pain) and dosage of opioids in the first prescription after surgery with continued opioid use through opioid refills over 12 months, while considering patient-level characteristics. A total of 9262 opioid-naïve patients underwent elective surgery, 7219 of whom were prescribed opioids following surgery. The results showed that 17% of patients received at least one opioid refill within one year post

Impact of mandated drug monitoring on opioid use during highly conformal radiotherapy for oropharynx cancer.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) have proliferated due to increasing opioid-related deaths. We evaluated acute opioid use changes for 64 patients treated with highly conformal radiotherapy (RT) following a state-mandated PDMP. METHODS: Patients receiving proton therapy (PT) (n=40), intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) (n=14), or both (n=10) were divided into preintervention (n=26) and postintervention cohorts (n=38); records were reviewed retrospectively under an institutional review board (IRB)-approved tracking protocol. Dosages prescribed during acute therapy (during RT-3

Opioid Utilization After Scoliosis Surgery is Greater in Marfan Syndrome Than Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective matched case cohort. OBJECTIVE: Compare postoperative opioid utilization and prescribing behaviors between patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) after posterior spinal fusion (PSF). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Opioids are an essential component of pain management after PSF. However, due to the potential for opioid use disorder and dependence, current analgesic strategies aim to minimize their use, especially in younger patients. Limited information exists on opioid utilization after PSF for syndromic scoliosis. PATIENTS AND

Characterization of pollutants in Florida street sweepings for management and reuse.

Disposal and beneficial-use options for street sweeping residuals collected as part of routine roadway maintenance activities in Florida, USA, were assessed by characterizing approximately 200 samples collected from 20 municipalities. Total concentrations (mg/kg or microg/kg) and leachable concentrations (mg/L or microg/L) of 11 metals and a number of organic pollutant groups (volatile organics, semi-volatile organics, pesticides, herbicides, carbamates) in the samples were measured. The synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) was performed to evaluate the leachability of the polluta
