Effects of endurance training on skeletal muscle mitochondrial function in Huntington disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial dysfunction may represent a pathogenic factor in Huntington disease (HD). Physical exercise leads to enhanced mitochondrial function in healthy participants. However, data on effects of physical exercise on HD skeletal muscle remains scarce. We aimed at investigating adaptations of the skeletal muscle mitochondria to endurance training in HD patients. METHODS: Thirteen HD patients and 11 healthy controls completed 26 weeks of endurance training. Before and after the training phase muscle biopsies were obtained from M. vastus lateralis. Mitochondrial respiratory chain

Potential role of endurance training in altering renal sympathetic nerve activity in CKD?

Chronic kidney disease (CKD), is characterized by a progressive loss of renal function and increase in cardiovascular risk. In this review paper, we discuss the pathophysiology of increased sympathetic nerve activity in CKD patients and raise the possibility of endurance exercise being an effective countermeasure to address this problem. We specifically focus on the potential role of endurance training in altering renal sympathetic nerve activity as increased renal sympathetic nerve activity negatively impacts kidney function as well indirectly effects multiple other systems and organs. Endurance training prevents TWEAK but not myostatin-mediated cardiac remodelling in cancer cachexia.

Strategies to prevent tumour burden-induced cardiac remodelling that might progress to heart failure are necessary to improve patients' health outcomes and tolerability to cancer therapies. Exercise has been suggested as a measure to prevent cardiac damage; however, its effectiveness on regulating cardiac remodelling secondary to cancer was never addressed. Using an animal model of mammary tumorigenesis, we studied the impact of 35weeks of endurance training on heart, focusing on the signalling pathways modulated by pro-inflammatory and wasting cytokines. The cardiac fibrosis and myofiber diso

Implications of moderate altitude training for sea-level endurance in elite distance runners.

Elite distance runners participated in one of two studies designed to investigate the effects of moderate altitude training (inspiratory partial pressure of oxygen approximately 115-125 mmHg) on submaximal, maximal and supramaximal exercise performance following return to sea-level. Study 1 (New Mexico, USA) involved 14 subjects who were assigned to a 4-week altitude training camp (1500-2000 m) whilst 9 performance-matched subjects continued with an identical training programme at sea-level (CON). Ten EXP subjects who trained at 1640 m and 19 CON subjects also participated in study 2 (Krugersd

Adaptations to endurance vs strength training in elite athletes revealed by serum proteomics.

OBJECTIVES: Elite training induces profound physiological adaptations, yet whether these changes manifest as stable circulating proteomes remains unclear. This study characterized serum proteomic profiles in male and female Olympic-level athletes to identify biomarkers associated with long-term endurance and strength training. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study in Olympic-level athletes and sedentary controls. METHODS: Resting serum samples were collected from male and female marathon runners and weightlifters (with 5-15 years of training), alongside age- and sex-matched sedentary individuals. Pr

Optimizing Resistance Training for Sprint and Endurance Athletes: Balancing Positive and Negative Adaptations.

Resistance training (RT) triggers diverse morphological and physiological adaptations that are broadly considered beneficial for performance enhancement as well as injury risk reduction. Some athletes and coaches therefore engage in, or prescribe, substantial amounts of RT under the assumption that continued increments in maximal strength capacity and/or muscle mass will lead to improved sports performance. In contrast, others employ minimal or no RT under the assumption that RT may impair endurance or sprint performances. However, the morphological and physiological adaptations by which RT mi

Training Session Models in Endurance Sports: A Norwegian Perspective on Best Practice Recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Our scientific understanding of the mechanistic and practical connections between training session prescriptions, their execution by athletes, and adaptations over time in elite endurance sports remains limited. These connections are fundamental to the art and science of coaching. OBJECTIVE: By using successful Norwegian endurance coaches as key informants, the aim of this study is to describe and compare best practice session models across different exercise intensities in Olympic endurance sports. METHODS: Data collection was based on a four-step pragmatic qualitative study des

Exogenous ketosis elevates circulating erythropoietin and stimulates muscular angiogenesis during endurance training overload.

De novo capillarization is a primary muscular adaptation to endurance exercise training and is crucial to improving performance. Excess training load, however, impedes such beneficial adaptations, yet we recently demonstrated that such downregulation may be counteracted by ketone ester ingestion (KE) post-exercise. Therefore, we investigated whether KE could increase pro-angiogenic factors and thereby stimulate muscular angiogenesis during a 3-week endurance training-overload period involving 10 training sessions/week in healthy, male volunteers. Subjects received either 25 g of a ketone ester

Activation of Three Major Signaling Pathways After Endurance Training and Spinal Cord Injury.

We aimed to investigate the effects of endurance training on expression of growth factors (GFs) and stimulation of neurotrophin-dependent signaling pathways (PI3k/Akt, PLCγ/PKC, PLCγ/CAMKII, Ras-Erk1/2 and Rac1-Cdc42) responsible for neuroplasticity, neuroregeneration, survival and growth after spinal cord injury (SCI). Wistar rats were divided into four groups: (i) intact controls; (ii) 6 weeks of endurance training; (iii) SCI; (iv) pre-training + SCI. The animals survived for 6 weeks after SCI. Firstly, endurance training markedly upregulated mRNA expression and protein levels (up to four ti

High-volume endurance exercise training stimulates hematopoiesis by increasing ACE NH2-terminal activity.

One of the health benefits of endurance exercise training (ET) is the stimulation of hematopoiesis. However, the mechanisms underlying ET-induced hematopoietic adaptations are understudied. N-Acetyl-Seryl-Aspartyl-Lysyl-Proline (Ac-SDKP) inhibits proliferation of early hematopoietic progenitor cells. The angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) NH2-terminal promotes hematopoiesis by inhibiting the anti-hematopoietic effect of Ac-SDKP. Here we demonstrate for the first time the role of ACE NH2-terminal in ET-induced hematopoietic adaptations. Wistar rats were subjected to 10 weeks of moderate-(T1)

Physiological cardiac remodelling in response to endurance exercise training: cellular and molecular mechanisms.

Exercise training fosters the health and performance of the cardiovascular system, and represents nowadays a powerful tool for cardiovascular therapy. Exercise exerts its beneficial effects through reducing cardiovascular risk factors, and directly affecting the cellular and molecular remodelling of the heart. Traditionally, moderate endurance exercise training has been viewed to determine a balanced and revertible physiological growth, through cardiomyocyte hypertrophy accompanied by appropriate neoangiogenesis (the Athlete's Heart). These cellular adaptations are due to the activation of sig

The South African Defence Force physical training programme. Part I. Effect of 1 year's military training on endurance fitness.

The effect of the South African Defence Force's (SADF) military training on the endurance fitness of recruits was investigated. Pre-military training maximal O2 consumption (53,14 ml/kg/min) did not change significantly during the study. In contrast, lactate turnpoint (ml O2/kg/min) and treadmill performance time were moderately enhanced (7,5% and 8% respectively; P less than 0,05) by the initial 10-week basic training programme. Further analysis of the results showed this endurance-training effect to be limited to recruits of average and, in particular, below-average fitness. The salutary eff

One Year of Endurance Exercise Training Does not Improve Vascular Function in Non-Trained Limbs in Healthy Individuals.

Regular endurance exercise is widely recognized for its cardiovascular health benefits, with improvements in vascular function particularly relevant for populations with impaired vascular health. However, it is unknown whether prolonged adherence to endurance exercise training in sedentary but healthy young individuals can improve vascular function in non-active limbs. This study investigated the impact of 1 year of supervised endurance exercise on vascular function in previously untrained, healthy young participants. Twelve healthy young adults (25 ± 4 years) were included in a 12-month super
