BACKGROUND: Hip fractures represent a major clinical burden for patients. Studies on the effect of preoperative carbohydrate loading before different surgical interventions have shown promising results but have not been tested in patients with hip fracture.
AIM: This study aimed to investigate the effects of preoperative oral carbohydrate drinks on the postoperative energy intake and incidence of complications after hip fracture surgery.
METHOD: This was a pilot study using a quasi-experimental design with a control group and an intervention group.
RESULT: The number of patients affected by

BACKGROUND: Nephrotoxic insults are among the most common causes of acute kidney injuries. The offending drug or agent should be defined swiftly and must be stopped. In some situations, the culprit agent may not be obvious. Energy drink consumption has reportedly increased in recent years, with ads claiming that energy drinks strengthen physical and mental performance. However, when consumed in uncontrolled amounts, they may have negative effects on health. An energy drink-induced acute kidney injury is reported in this case presentation. There have been only four similar cases in the literatu

BACKGROUND: Energy drinks contain caffeine, taurine, sucrose, vitamins, and other amino acids. The dosage of these varies depending on the drink chosen. Several studies on energy drinks have been carried out, but the results obtained are still inconsistent as well as the risk associated with consumption. This study analyzed the cardio- and cerebrovascular responses after consumption of an energy drink - RedBull® - under standardized pre- and post-ingestion conditions and its impact on the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular system.
METHODS: A sample of 30 healthy young adult females was recrui

Beyond their effect on blood pressure, the effect of energy drinks on heart rate in children and teenagers has not been evaluated until now. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the acute cardiovascular effects of energy drinks in healthy children and teenagers. Twenty-six children and adolescents (mean age 14.49 years) received a commercially available energy drink (ED) and placebo on two consecutive days based on the maximum caffeine dosage as proposed by the European Food Safety Authority. Heart rhythm and electrocardiographic time intervals were assessed in a prospective, randomized, doub

Overconsumption of energy drinks containing high levels of caffeine has been increasingly linked to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This case report describes a 24-year-old Caribbean-Black male with no prior comorbidities who experienced an aborted sudden cardiac death (SCD) after a recent energy drink binge a few hours prior to his ventricular fibrillation (VF) cardiac arrest. Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) was successfully performed for a dreaded widowmaker lesion, thought to have arisen as a sequela of his excessive energy drink intake. The clinician should be cog

This study examined the association between energy drink consumption and substance use among adolescents and tested whether sex and/or grade level (i.e., middle vs. high school) moderate the association. Data were derived from the 2017 Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey, a representative survey of students in 7th to 12th grade. Analyses included 10,662 students who self-reported information on energy drink consumption and substance use. Poisson regression models were used with adjustments for important covariates. Energy drink consumption was associated with tobacco cigarette smoking (

This study investigated the effect of a caffeinated energy drink on various aspects of performance in sprint swimmers. In a randomised and counterbalanced order, fourteen male sprint swimmers performed two acute experimental trials after the ingestion of a caffeinated energy drink (3 mg/kg) or after the ingestion of the same energy drink without caffeine (0 mg/kg; placebo). After 60 min of ingestion of the beverages, the swimmers performed a countermovement jump, a maximal handgrip test, a 50 m simulated competition and a 45 s swim at maximal intensity in a swim ergometer. A blood sample was w

INTRODUCTION: The consumption of energy drinks has increased significantly. We report the case of a patient who presented to our hospital with jaundice, abdominal pain, and markedly increased liver transaminases likely due to the increased consumption of an energy drink. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report in the literature linking the development of acute hepatitis to the consumption of an energy drink.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old Caucasian woman presented to our hospital with epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, and low-grade fever. She had been drinking 10 cans o

In recent decades, there has been a worrying increase in the consumption of energy drinks, especially among the young population. These beverages have been linked to effects primarily on the nervous and cardiovascular systems; however, renal consequences remain poorly understood, particularly those associated with long-term consumption. The heterogeneity in consumption patterns, together with variability in consumer profiles, has limited the ability to obtain conclusive and consistent evidence on this issue. Therefore, it is essential to address this topic from a preclinical perspective under

OBJECTIVES: Heavy consumption of energy drinks appears to pose a public health problem among young adults. This paper examines (i) the prevalence of chronic heavy energy drink use (consuming energy drinks more than once a day) and (ii) its associations with sociodemographic and health behaviour-related factors, especially substance use.
METHODS: We used multiple logistic regression analyses to examine the relationships between chronic heavy energy drink use and sociodemographic and health behaviour-related factors, based on cross-sectional data from 18–21-year-old men who took part in t

The purpose of this study was to evaluate knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning energy drink consumption and the prevalence of side effects among medical students. Twenty-two percent of respondents were regular users, particularly men (p < .0005). Users were younger (p = .027) and drank alcohol more frequently (p = .008) than "non-users." Forty-nine percent consumed alcohol associated with energy drinks. Forty-five percent of medical students declared side effects after energy drink consumption, such as palpitations (35%), insomnia (21%), and irritability (20%). The study confirms a l

This study investigated the ergogenic effects of a commercial energy drink (Red Bull) or an equivalent dose of anhydrous caffeine in comparison with a noncaffeinated control beverage on cycling performance. Eleven trained male cyclists (31.7 ± 5.9 y 82.3 ± 6.1 kg, VO2max = 60.3 ± 7.8 mL · kg-1 · min-1) participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover-design study involving 3 experimental conditions. Participants were randomly administered Red Bull (9.4 mL/kg body mass [BM] containing 3 mg/kg BM caffeine), anhydrous caffeine (3 mg/kg BM given in capsule form), or a placebo 90 min b

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Energy drinks are marketed to adolescents as products that enhance alertness, concentration, and physical or sports performance, yet their use may also represent a visible marker of sleep debt and a potential contributor to disrupted 24 h behavioral patterns. This narrative review examines evidence linking energy drink consumption with adolescent sleep disturbance and considers implications for obesity risk, cognition, and physical activity.
METHODS: Targeted literature searches were conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and reference lists to iden

INTRODUCTION: The mucinoses of the type of scleredema and scleromyxedema are diseases marked by excessive production of mucin deposits in the skin and subcutaneous tissue, which causes skin hardening. The skin and subcutaneous deposits hamper the movement of limbs, the thorax as well as mouth. The same mechanism also damages other organs (the heart, lungs, oesophagus). It is probably caused by the stimulation of mucin production in fibroblasts by immunoglobulins, frequently monoclonal immunoglobulin. Therefore these diseases are typically associated with monoclonal gammopathy.

Introduction: Methadone is a mu-opioid agonist with a delayed time to peak concentration that requires an extended period of monitoring following an overdose. Available data suggests that the combination of psychostimulants with methadone may augment antinociception and tolerance to opioids. Case Report: A 26-year-old male (83.9 kg) presented to the ED approximately 1 hour after unintentionally ingesting 200-250 mg of liquid methadone and an energy drink, along with 20 mg of dextroamphetamine/amphetamine prior to the event. Vital signs were: blood pressure (BP), 143/91 mmHg; heart rate (HR), 7

The vast majority of cases of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) are the result of acquired antibodies which inhibit the activity of the ADAMTS13 enzyme. Acquired TTP is more frequently seen in young females or in individuals with autoimmune disease. The development of antibodies against ADAMTS13 may also result from the administration or consumption of drugs and other substances. However, specific laboratory tests to identify the pathogenic mechanism of a particular drug may not be available, and the role of a potentially implicated drug or other ingested substance may not be clear.
