Clock Gene Variants Are Associated with Energy and Macronutrient Intake in Early Childhood and Adulthood.

Background/Objectives: Obesity remains a global health concern, and personalized prevention strategies that consider genetic predispositions can enhance existing strategies. Research suggests that variation in circadian rhythm-related genes, or clock genes, may influence obesity risk, in part through effects on dietary behaviour. However, associations between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in clock genes and dietary outcomes remain understudied, particularly in children. Therefore, we investigated cross-sectional associations between clock gene SNPs and dietary outcomes using baseline

Effect of Leucaena leucocephala intake on thyroid hormones and energy balance of Brangus bulls.

Mimosine, a non-proteinogenic amino acid found in Leucaena plant, is a toxic compound that induce thyroid disorders. Feeding this legume has been shown to reduce serum triiodothyronine (T3 ) and thyroxine (T4 ) levels in cattle. Since these hormones are involved in regulating basal metabolism in mammals, we hypothesized that decreasing levels of these hormones would impact energy metabolism, affecting heat production (HP) and energy requirements for maintenance. Six non-castrated Brangus bulls with an average body weight (BW) of 311 ± 17 kg and 20 ± 2 months of age were randomly distributed in

Loss of HCN2 leads to delayed gastrointestinal motility and reduced energy intake in mice.

Hyperpolarization-activated Cyclic Nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels are important regulators of excitability in neural, cardiac, and other pacemaking cells, which are often altered in disease. In mice, loss of HCN2 leads to cardiac dysrhythmias, persistent spike-wave discharges similar to those seen in absence epilepsy, ataxia, tremor, reduced neuropathic and inflammatory pain, antidepressant-like behavior, infertility, and severely restricted growth. While many of these phenotypes have tissue-specific mechanisms, the cause of restricted growth in HCN2 knockout animals remains unknown. Here, we

Increase in energy intake leads to a decrease in obestatin in restricting-type of anorexia nervosa.

Restricting-type of anorexia nervosa (AN-R) is a serious disorder affecting adolescents and young adults, and decreases quality of life over long period. Successful weight restoration is an important prognostic factor for disease outcome; however, the underlying mechanism of refeeding-resistance, a core psychopathology relevant to 'ambivalent' eating behaviors, remains unclear in this disorder. Obestatin plays an important role in the regulation of growth hormone release, appetite, and energy metabolism. However, the progress of these patients and changes in the levels of obestatin during trea

Gender differences in the effects of methylphenidate on energy intake in young adults: a preliminary study.

The present study examined gender differences in response to methylphenidate (MPH) on energy intake and macronutrient preference. Twelve adults (6 men, 6 women) were given placebo or short-acting MPH (0.5 mg/kg) in a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled crossover fashion. One hour after drug administration, appetite sensations and the relative reinforcing value of energy-dense snack food were measured, followed immediately by energy intake and macronutrient preference during a buffet lunch. Relative to placebo, men exhibited a significantly greater reduction in energy intake, fat intak

Role of the endocannabinoid system in food intake, energy homeostasis and regulation of the endocrine pancreas.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a signalling cascade consisting of CB1 and CB2 receptors, and enzymes for the synthesis and degradation of endogenous ligands for these receptors. Central CB1 receptors have been most widely studied since they play key roles in energy homeostasis and rimonabant, a CB1 receptor antagonist, was used clinically to treat obesity. Less is known about CB2 receptors, but their abundant expression by lymphocytes and macrophages has led to suggestions of their importance in immune and inflammatory reactions. More recently, it has become apparent that both CB1 and CB2

Hypothalamic galanin and plasma leptin and ghrelin in the maintenance of energy intake in the Brattleboro rat.

Galanin, ghrelin, and leptin are three peptides involved in feeding regulation and more particularly in fat intake. The Brattleboro (di/di) rat is a genetic model of diabetes insipidus characterized by a preference for fat when it is in a food choice situation. Here, we measured hypothalamic galanin concentrations, plasma ghrelin and leptin and dietary preferences of adult di/di Brattleboro rats, di/+ and Long-Evans controls. The Brattleboro rats weighed significantly less than the di/+ rats (-18%; P<0.001). The fat-to-carbohydrate intake ratio was significantly greater in Brattleboro rats tha

Short-term effects of macronutrient preloads on appetite and energy intake in lean women.

This study investigated the relative satiating hierarchy of the four energy-providing macronutrients (fat, carbohydrate (CHO), protein, and alcohol) in lean women. On four separate occasions, the composition of an iso-energetic lunch preload was manipulated in 12 lean (BMI < 25 kg/m2) women. The four treatments comprised a 1-MJ baseline meal and drink (40% fat, 48% CHO, 12% protein) to which was covertly added: 1) + 1MJ protein; 2) + 1MJ alcohol; 3) + 1MJ CHO; and 4) + 1MJ fat. Prior to and at 30-min intervals, subjects completed 100-mm visual analogue scales rating subjective hunger and satie

Ovarian follicular development in prepubertal heifers is influenced by level of dietary energy intake.

Objectives were twofold: 1) to determine the chronology of development of dominant ovarian follicles during the peripubertal period in heifers and 2) to determine whether feeding a diet with low energy content that delays onset of puberty alters chronology of dominant ovarian follicular development in peripubertal heifers. Ten heifers of composite breeding (1/4 Angus, 1/4 Hereford, 1/4 Red Poll, 1/4 Pinzgauer) were randomly assigned, at 8 mo of age, to receive a diet designed to produce 0.9 (n = 5) or 0.3 (n = 5) kg body weight gain per day for the duration of the experiment. Effects of various brans on energy intake and glucose metabolism in alloxan diabetic rats.

The purpose of the present study was, firstly, to determine whether untreated rye bran and untreated wheat bran differ in their ability to affect energy intake and glucose metabolism in alloxan diabetic rats; and secondly, to find out whether wheat brans processed by extrusion-cooking or acid-treatment differ in this respect. A low-fiber high-starch diet was used as reference. There was a positive correlation between energy intake and urinary glucose excretion. No correlation between these parameters and weight increase was found. The mean urinary glucose excretion was lowest in the animals fe

Innovative use of depth data to estimate energy intake and expenditure in Adélie penguins.

Energy governs species' life histories and pace of living, requiring individuals to make trade-offs. However, measuring energetic parameters in the wild is challenging, often resulting in data collected from heterogeneous sources. This complicates comprehensive analysis and hampers transferability within and across case studies. We present a novel framework, combining information obtained from eco-physiology and biologging techniques, to estimate both energy expenditure and intake in 48 Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) during the chick-rearing stage. We employed the machine learning algori

Eating Patterns during Pregnancy and Postpartum and Their Association with Diet Quality and Energy Intake.

This study investigates the relationship between meal-specific eating patterns during pregnancy and postpartum with maternal diet quality and energy intake. Participants in a prospective cohort study completed 24-h dietary recalls three times throughout both pregnancy and 1 year postpartum (n = 420). Linear regressions estimated the associations of eating frequency (number of daily main meals and eating occasions), meal and energy regularity (meal skipping and variation of daily energy intake), and intake timing patterns (distribution of energy intake throughout the day, derived using principa

Effects of pramlintide on energy intake and food preference in rats given a choice diet.

Amylin is a peptide hormone involved in the control of energy balance, making the amylin system a potential target for pharmacotherapies to treat obesity. Pramlintide, an amylin analogue, is an FDA-approved medication for the treatment of diabetes that also has food intake- and body weight-suppressive effects. However, it is unknown whether pramlintide may preferentially reduce intake of highly palatable, energy dense food, the overconsumption of which is thought to play a role in the etiology of obesity. Here, we investigate the effects of pramlintide on food intake and body weight in rats gi

Fluid and energy intake in stroke patients during acute hospitalization in a stroke unit.

Proper hydration and nutrition have been found to be contributing factors to a better recovery in patients after stroke. A better knowledge of factors influencing fluid and energy intake may contribute to a better care of the acute stroke patient. Aim of this study was to describe hydration status, fluid intake, and energy intake of stroke patients during acute hospitalization in a stroke unit. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted in stroke patients admitted to a stroke unit. All patients received neurological evaluation and urinary osmolality (uOsm) measure at admission and dischar

Training response inhibition to food is associated with weight loss and reduced energy intake.

The majority of adults in the UK and US are overweight or obese due to multiple factors including excess energy intake. Training people to inhibit simple motor responses (key presses) to high-energy density food pictures reduces intake in laboratory studies. We examined whether online response inhibition training reduced real-world food consumption and weight in a community sample of adults who were predominantly overweight or obese (N = 83). Participants were allocated in a randomised, double-blind design to receive four 10-min sessions of either active or control go/no-go training in which e

The influence of energy intake on the pathophysiology of Trypanosoma congolense infection in Scottish blackface sheep.

The intensity of parasitaemia, degree of anaemia, live body weight gains and blood biochemical changes were measured in two groups of Scottish Blackface sheep infected experimentally with Trypanosoma congolense and allowed either a high (9.9 MJ metabolisable energy (ME) day-1) or a low (6.1 MJ ME day-1) energy intake. It was observed that infected animals on the low energy intake had a longer mean prepatent period, but following patency they developed more severe anaemia and greater growth retardation than those on the high energy intake. Both infected groups exhibited significant reductions i

Energy expenditure, physical activity and dietary intake among patients with newly diagnosed colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Characterizing energy balance components such as total energy expenditure (TEE), energy intake (EI), and physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) is crucial to assessing nutritional status and guiding interventions. OBJECTIVE: This observational study explored these variables and their interrelationships in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: In patients with newly diagnosed CRC, PAEE was evaluated as the difference between TEE (doubly labeled water) and resting energy expenditure (REE; indirect calorimetry). Activity monitors worn during the 2-wk doubly labeled wa
