[Third case of human hepatic capillariasis in Mexico].

A case of hepatic capillariasis in a 54-year-old woman confined to a mental institution is reported. The patient was transferred to the Hospital General de México for terminal care of a breast cancer; she died 12 days after admission. Hepatomegaly was observed clinically and numerous Capillaria hepatica eggs were found at autopsy. The laboratory examinations did not show eosinophilia or other abnormalities. Twenty-six cases of human hepatic capillariasis have been recorded in the world literature. This is the third case reported in Mexico: the previous two in children. Since the patient had a

Paracapillaria philippinensis Infection in India: A Report of Four Cases.

Capillaria philippinensis (recently renamed Paracapillaria philippinensis [P. philippinensis]) is a nematode infection endemic to Southeast Asia and Egypt and is rarely reported in India. This disease can be fatal if it is not diagnosed early and treated appropriately. Four cases of P. philippinensis infection identified over a decade from a single center in India are reported. All patients presented with diarrhea and reported symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and pedal edema, suggesting malabsorption. Hypoalbuminemia was noted in three patients. In all cases, the diagnosis was confir

Nephrotomy as a surgical approach for renal dioctophymosis in eighteen dogs.

Dioctophymosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Dioctophyme renale, a nematode that can reach up to 100 cm in length and is commonly known as the "giant kidney worm." The parasite shows a marked predilection for the right kidney, and ultrasonography is the diagnostic method of choice, allowing visualization of characteristic tubular structures within the renal parenchyma. Surgical intervention remains the only established treatment, with nephrectomy being the most commonly performed procedure, although nephrotomy may be considered in cases with residual renal parenchyma. This study aimed to ret

The endoscopic-pathologic findings in intestinal capillariais: a case report.

A 27-year-old Thai man presented with chronic watery diarrhea for 2 years. The diagnosis of capillariasis was made by enteroscopy after negative repeated stool tests. Here, the authors reported the first case of abnormal endoscopic finding of intestinal capillariasis. It showed segmental erythematous and swelling of proximal jejunal mucosa with an area of superficial erosion covered by exudates. The parasitic eggs were identified in jejunal content and worms were identified in jejunal mucosa. He was successfully treated with albendazole.

Diagnosis and therapy of Capillaria plica infection: report and literature review.

Worldwide, data on Capillaria (Pearsonema) plica infections of the urinary tract in domestic carnivores are limited. Nevertheless, cystitis with hematuria, dysuria or pollakiuria may suggest a C. plica infection. A three-year old dog from Poland showing pollakiuria and hematuria was presented. At urine analysis, C. plica eggs were found in the urine sediment. The dog was unsuccessfully treated with a daily oral dose of fenbendazole 50 mg/kg BW for 5 days, while a single subcutaneous administration of ivermectin 0.2 mg/kg BW once effectively eliminated C. plica infection.

Gastroenteric parasite of wild Galliformes in the Italian Alps: implication for conservation management.

This study provides insights about the diversity, prevalence and distribution of alpine wild galliformes gastrointestinal parasite community, trying to fill a gap in the scientific information currently available in scientific literature. The analysis included three host species: 77 rock partridge (Alectoris graeca saxatilis), 83 black grouse (Tetrao tetrix tetrix) and 26 rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta helveticus) shot during the hunting seasons 2008-2015. Parasites isolated were Ascaridia compar, Capillaria caudinflata and cestodes. The rock ptarmigan was free from gastrointestinal parasites, w

Less common parasitic infections in Southeast Asia that can produce outbreaks.

The culturally deeply rooted habit of eating raw or undercooked foodstuffs, coupled with inadequate hygiene practices and lack of separation between foodstuff and wildlife in parts of Southeast Asia have repeatedly led to outbreaks due to rare parasitic infections. Trichinellosis, capillariasis and angiostrongyliasis are the three prime examples of such outbreaks occurring in Southeast Asia. We review the current knowledge of trichinellosis, capillariasis and angiostrongyliasis. Whilst infections-caused by nematodes-are rarely reported, their public health importance is considerable. Cognitive bias in veterinary clinical decision-making: Antemortem misdiagnosis of suspected giant kidney worm (Dioctophyme renale) in Australia.

A 10-year-old male neutered Rottweiler was referred for evaluation of suspected Dioctophyme renale infection following haematuria, lethargy, coughing and passage of a worm-like structure in the urine. The presumptive diagnosis was strongly influenced by the referring veterinarian's prior experience with D. renale in an endemic region. Diagnostic imaging identified left renal abnormalities including hydronephrosis, a dilated ureter containing a tubular intraluminal structure and multiple tubular structures within the urinary bladder; these observations further reinforced the initial clinical im

Integrated Taxonomic Approaches to Gastrointestinal and Urinary Capillariid Nematodes from Wild and Domestic Mammals.

Fine nematodes of the family Capillariidae parasitize various organs and tissues in fish, amphibians, reptiles, avians, and mammals. Currently classified into more than 20 genera, these nematodes are primarily distinguished based on the caudal structures of male worms. Morphological and molecular analyses were conducted on 15 mammal-parasitic species belonging to the genera Aonchotheca (A. putorii, A. suzukii n. sp., A. suis n. comb. (syn. Capillaria suis), A. riukiuensis, and A. bilobata), Pearsonema (P. neoplica n. sp., P. feliscati, P. iharai n. sp., and P. toriii n. sp.), Liniscus (L. himi

Hepatic Capillariasis- Drug Targets.

Zoonotic infections are increasingly becoming public health menaces and are usually transmitted to humans due to unsuitable environmental conditions. One of them is hepatic capillariasis, caused by the parasite Capillaria hepatica, primarily a disease of rodents, with hepatic manifestations in humans. Although its prevalence is very low, it can cause significant morbidity and mortality, with cases reported from all over the world. The main infective form for humans is the embryonated egg of the parasite, which hatches in the intestine and ultimately colonize the liver. The larvae mature and re

Capillaria plectropomi n. sp. (Nematoda: Capillariidae), a new intestinal parasite of the leopard coral grouper Plectropomus leopardus (Serranidae) off New Caledonia.

A new nematode species, Capillaria plectropomi n. sp. (Capillariidae), is described from the intestine of the leopard coral grouper Plectropomus leopardus (Lacepède) from coral reefs off New Caledonia. The new species, belonging to the subgenus Neocapillaria Moravec, 1987, differs from other congeneric species of this subgenus from marine fishes mainly in the length (168-186 μm), shape and structure of the spicule. It is characterized, in the male, by the presence of two well-developed dorsolateral caudal lobes, a pair of lateral papillae, a heavily sclerotized spicule with many rough transver

Pearsonema (syn Capillaria) plica associated cystitis in a Fennoscandian arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus: a case report.

The bladderworm Pearsonema (syn Capillaria) plica affects domestic dogs and wild carnivores worldwide. A high prevalence in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) has been reported in many European countries. P. plica inhabits the lower urinary tract and is considered to be of low pathogenic significance in dogs mostly causing asymptomatic infections. However, a higher level of pathogenicity has been reported in foxes. A severe cystitis associated with numerous bladderworms was found in a captive arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) originating from the endangered Fennoscandian arctic fox population. To our knowled

Development of an Immunochromatographic Test to Detect Antibodies in Simulated Whole-Blood Samples for the Diagnosis of Intestinal Capillariasis.

Intestinal capillariasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Capillaria philippinensis, a fish-borne nematode. Patients present with clinical symptoms that include borborygmus chronic diarrhea, intermittent abdominal pain, weight loss, and several degrees of painless lower-leg edema. Atypical clinical manifestations and diagnostic confusion with diarrhea caused by gastrointestinal cancer, HIV infection, giardiasis, and hyperthyroidism may occur. Misdiagnosis and improper treatment can be fatal. Parasite eggs and larvae are passed intermittently in feces, rendering fecal examination insen

Capillaria hepatica infection in black rats (Rattus rattus) on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory.

Rats (Rattus spp.) are among the most damaging invasive species worldwide. The accidental introduction of rats has caused significant detriment to native flora and fauna, crops, structures, and human livelihoods. Rats are vectors of disease and carriers of various zoonotic parasites. Capillaria hepatica (syn. Callodium hepaticum) is a parasitic nematode found primarily in rodents but is known to infect over 140 mammal species, including human beings and several species of domestic animals. In this case study, the presence of C. hepatica infection in black rats on Diego Garcia, British Indian O

Ascaris spp. and Capillaria caudinflata infections in captive-bred crested ibis (Nipponia nippon) in China.

Crested ibis (Nipponia nippon), an endan gered native bird, was called the "precious stone" of oriental birds. N. nippon was considered a critically endangered species in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and a first-class national protected animal in China. The Chinese government had exerted considerable effort to protect the N. nippon population. An effective approach to increase the number of these birds was captive breeding. However, several pathogens, including parasites, could jeopardize the health of this species. The present study used the fecal flotation method to determine prev

A Hospital-Based Study of Intestinal Capillariasis in Thailand: Clinical Features, Potential Clues for Diagnosis, and Epidemiological Characteristics of 85 Patients.

Intestinal capillariasis caused by Capillaria philippinensis, a fish-borne nematode, is an important, emerging zoonotic helminthiasis. Cases may be fatal if suitable treatment is not administered in time. We reported a hospital-based study of 85 cases in Thailand, most of which were in the northeast. All patients had a history of eating raw or insufficiently cooked fresh water fish or prawns. The clinical manifestations are characterized by chronic diarrhea, borborygmi, abdominal pain, marked weight loss, muscle weakness, fatigue, dizziness, anorexia, and edema, as well as protein and electrol

A case of intestinal capillariasis in the Republic of Korea.

In 1991, we observed a Korean man infected by Capillaria philippinensis who had no history of traveling in known endemic areas. He had year-long diarrhea with severe loss of body weight. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and eating raw meat of game animals and fish. An open full-thickness biopsy of the ileum showed flat mucosal surface and sections of the round worm, and fecal examination revealed numerous elliptical helminth eggs. The worms and eggs were consistent with features of C. philippinensis. He was treated with albendazole and was cured. This is the first known case of intestinal capill
