Global systematic review of patients with cerebral amebiasis: Successful and rapid clinical and paraclinical diagnostic methods.

Cerebral amebiasis is the most dangerous extraintestinal manifestation of Entamoeba histolytica and poses a critical concern in developing countries. This study aims to systematically review the clinical features, paraclinical findings, and treatment approaches of patients with cerebral amebiasis. The articles were retrieved from Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Literature searches were conducted through October 25, 2024. Clinically, common symptoms include fever, headaches, hemiparesis, left-sided hemiplegia, and seizures. Regarding diagnosis, although the in

A rare case of extraintestinal amebiasis.

BACKGROUND: Amoebiasis is caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica, which is a rare infectious disease in developed countries. If the trophozoites enter the blood, it can spread through the body, such as brain, and lungs. Cases of simultaneous infection of multiple organs are extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report a case of simultaneous infection of amoeba in pulmonary pleura, urinary system and central nervous system. Although the patient received anti amoeba treatment, the prognosis of the patient was poor. CONCLUSIONS: In this patient, multiple extraintestinal amebic infec

Public health and clinical importance of amoebiasis in Malaysia: a review.

Entamoeba histolytica, the causative agent of human amoebiasis remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries and is responsible for up to 100,000 deaths worldwide each year. Entamoeba dispar, morphologically indistinguishable from E. histolytica is more common in humans in many parts of the world. Similarly Entamoeba moshkovskii, which was long considered to be a free-living amoeba is also morphologically identical to E. histolytica and E. dispar, and is highly prevalent in some E. histolytica endemic countries. Humans are the host of infection and there would

Hemolytic uremic syndrome associated with Entamoeba histolytica intestinal infection.

Amebiasis secondary to Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) continues to be a major source of morbidity and mortality worldwide, mainly in developing countries. An association between amebic dysentery and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) has been mentioned, but a cause-and-effect relationship has never been confirmed. We report the case of an 11-year-old healthy white female who developed severe bloody diarrhea after drinking contaminated unboiled water, developing classic HUS and requiring acute intermittent hemodialysis. The etiological study confirmed numerous cysts and hematophagous troph

Salpingitis due to Entamoeba histolytica.

We describe the pathology of a unique case of Fallopian tube amebiasis, associated with hydrosalpinx, in a 21-year-old woman. She complained of lower abdominal pain, had a foul-smelling green vaginal discharge and fever during one week. There was a discrete increase in body temperature and a painful abdominal palpation at the lower right side, with signs of local peritoneal irritation. Pathological examination showed a marked dilatation of the fallopian tube and hydrosalpinx. Microscopic examination showed a poorly formed granuloma composed of large macrophages with many Entamoeba histolytica

Laboratory diagnosis of amebiasis.

The detection of Entamoeba histolytica, the causative agent of amebiasis, is an important goal of the clinical microbiology laboratory. To assess the scope of E. histolytica infection, it is necessary to utilize accurate diagnostic tools. As more is discovered about the molecular and cell biology of E. histolytica, there is great potential for further understanding the pathogenesis of amebiasis. Molecular biology-based diagnosis may become the technique of choice in the future because establishment of these protozoa in culture is still not a routine clinical laboratory process. In all cases, c

New concepts regarding the pathogenesis of amebiasis.

Our understanding of the pathogenesis of amebiasis has progressed significantly since Dr. Braude's description of the major clinical syndromes of amebic liver abscess. His hypothesis that invasive amebic strains must be resistant to complement-mediated lysis has been confirmed. We have also shown that Entamoeba histolytica activates complement by a unique mechanism, i.e., cleavage of C3 by an extracellular cysteine proteinase. Cysteine proteinases are important virulence factors encoded by at least three genes; one gene, acp1, is unique to invasive strains. The amebic cysteine proteinases are

Restoration of virulence to rat of axenically grown Entamoeba histolytica by cholesterol and hamster liver passage.

A virulent strain of Entamoeba histolytica (NIH-200) from a symptomatic human case, cultured in vitro for more than three years, was unable to infect rat caecum or hamster liver. When grown with a mixed bacterial flora, it infected rat caecum but did not produce ulceration. After passaging amoebae growing with bacteria in hamster liver, amoebic hepatic lesions were regularly produced. The amoebae from liver lesions produced ulceration in the caeca of rats. Expoxure to cholesterol of amoebae growing with bacteria or feeding rats orally with cholesterol and injecting these amoebae along with bac

Pathogenicity of entamoeba histolytica.

The pathogenicity of Entamoeba histolytica is discussed from an immunologic point of view. The evidence that there is some "trigger" mechanism which converts a commensal dwelling organism into a tissue invasive pathogen is rejected as inadequate. The number of liver abscess cases in comparison with the number of intestinal amebic infections in a population is so low that this in itself suggests that tissue invasion is a rare event in the life history of the ameba. A review is made of the experimental evidence that some type of sensitization is necessary before ameba can invade tissue. In postu

A review into the recent advances in the world of amoebiasis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Amoebiasis is a parasitic infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica , affecting 10% of the global population. It is a well recognized cause of morbidity and mortality in low-middle-income countries where it is endemic. However, with increased migration and global travel, amoebiasis is now more common in high-income countries, although diagnosis is often delayed or even missed due to lack of awareness of the latest epidemiology and optimal diagnostic testing. This review discusses the evolving prevalence, and the current international guidelines for the investigation and trea

Entamoeba Chitinase is Required for Mature Round Cyst Formation.

Entamoeba histolytica, a protozoan parasite, causes amoebiasis in humans. Amoebiasis transmission is solely mediated by chitin-walled cysts, which are produced in the large intestine of humans from proliferative trophozoites by a cell differentiation process called encystation. Resistance to environmental stresses, an essential characteristic for transmission, is attributed to the cyst wall, which is constructed from chitin and several protein components, including chitinase. Chitinase may play a key role in cyst wall formation; however, this has not been confirmed. Here, to elucidate the phys

Amoebiasis vaccine development: A snapshot on E. histolytica with emphasis on perspectives of Gal/GalNAc lectin.

Amoebiasis/amebiasis is a gastrointestinal infection caused by an enteric dwelling protozoan, Entamoeba histolytica. The disease is endemic in the developing world and is transmitted mainly via the faecal-oral route (e.g., in water or food) and may or may not be symptomatic. This disease of socio-economic importance worldwide involves parasite adherence and cytolysis of human cells followed by invasion that is mediated by galactose-binding (Gal/GalNAc) surface lectin. Disruption of the mucus layer leads to invasive intestinal and extraintestinal infection. Gal-lectin based vaccinations have co

First report of genitourinary amoebiasis in Thailand.

Genitourinary amoebiasis is a rare form of kidney and urinary tract infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Here, we describe the first case of unusual infection caused by E. histolytica in Bueng Kan province, northeast, Thailand. A 63-year-old female patient was diagnosed as acute pyelonephritis. E. histotolytica trophozoites were accidentally found in urine collected from a catheter.

Entamoeba histolytica cathepsin-like enzymes : interactions with the host gut.

Cysteine proteases of the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica are key virulence factors involved in overcoming host defences. These proteases are cathepsin-like enzymes with a cathepsin-L like structure, but cathepsin-B substrate specificity. In the host intestine, amoeba cysteine proteases cleave colonic mucins and degrade secretory immunoglobulin (Ig) A and IgG rendering them ineffective. They also act on epithelial tight junctions and degrade the extracellular matrix to promote Cell death. They are involved in the destruction of red blood cells and the evasion of neutrophils and macrop
