Enterovirus infection--a possible trigger for Graves' disease?

Viruses are potential environmental factors in autoimmune disease. Some evidence suggests a relationship between enteroviral infection (especially Coxsackie B virus) and autoimmunity. We investigated 21 individuals with recent onset of Graves' hyperthyroidism in regard of (subclinical) enterovirus infection. Thyrotoxic symptoms had started about two months before blood sample collection. The patients were from Upper Austria and mainly female (17/21). Their mean free thyroxin levels in blood were twice the maximum normal value and the majority achieved a euthyroid state 1 1/2 years later, after

[Role of enterovirus infection in the etiology of uveitis in children].

A total of 224 cases with endogenic uveitis in infants are analyzed. The results of complex clinical and immunological analysis and serologic findings bring the authors to a conclusion that enteroviral uveitis makes up 42 percent of all uveitis in children aged under 3 and that this condition is prevalent in this country. Typical late complications, long persistence of virus-neutralizing antibodies in high titers (up to 8-10 years after convalescence) permit a retrospective etiological diagnosis.

Influence of certain immunodepressants on experimental flavivirus and enterovirus infections in mice.

The effects of cyclophosphamide and 1,3-(piperidinomethyl)-5-phenyl-5-ethylbarbituric acid on certain flavi- and enterovirus infections in mice were studied. Differential enhancement of mortality rates after extraneural and, less markedly, intracerebral virus inoculation was noted. While depression of humoral and/or cell-mediated immunity is considered to be responsible for the effects observed in flavivirus infections, impaired function of the reticuloendothelial system seems to contribute mainly to the potentiation of Mengo virus infection by the immunodepressants used.

Clinical Insights and Severity of Enterovirus D68 Respiratory Infections in Vietnamese Children.

BACKGROUND: Enterovirus D68 (EVD68) causes respiratory disease, yet the risk of severe respiratory disease remains incompletely quantified, especially when stratified by comorbidity status. This study aims to describe the clinical features and risk of severe disease in children with EVD68 compared with those with other Rhinoviruses/Enteroviruses, accounting for comorbidity. METHODS: We analyzed 1100 pediatric EV-positive cases from surveillance in Vietnam (2019-2022), excluding viral coinfections. EVD68 was confirmed by real-time PCR. We examined clinical features, treatments, and comorbiditi

Proinflammatory cytokine reactions in enterovirus 71 infections of the central nervous system.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection can lead to devastating clinical outcomes. An appreciation of the scientific relationship between cytokine response and patient mortality may help limit the risks posed by this deadly illness. We present the results of a study that compared the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) in 24 patients with EV71 infection. Cases in this study involved diverse manifestations or complications, including encephalitis, poliomyelitis-like syndrome, meningitis, and pulmonary edema. CSF levels of IL-6 in study pat

Antiviral agents for influenza, hepatitis C and herpesvirus, enterovirus and rhinovirus infections.

Advances in antiviral therapy have involved both development of new, effective drugs and modification of pre-existing drugs or regimens to increase effectiveness. New agents against influenza virus are the neuraminidase inhibitors zanamivir and oseltamivir, which target specific viral processes and have minimal side effects. New agents for herpesviruses (famciclovir, valaciclovir, valganciclovir) have greater oral bioavailability, allowing less frequent dosing, but mechanisms of action are similar to older agents (aciclovir, ganciclovir). Pleconaril has some activity against enteroviruses and

Enterovirus type 71 infections: a varied clinical pattern sometimes mimicking paralytic poliomyelitis.

Not all poliomyelitis-like paralytic illnesses can be attributed to polioviruses. Among the most recently recognized agents able to cause severe central nervous system disease with persistent flaccid paralysis is enterovirus type 71. In the 1969-1973 California outbreaks during which strains of this type were first reported, meningitis predominated, but cases of encephalitis were also seen. Outbreaks in different regions of the world followed. In some, hand-foot-and-mouth syndrome predominated; in others, meningitis; and in some, the clinical patterns were mixed. In the 1975 Bulgarian outbreak

The epidemiological characteristics of enterovirus infection before and after the use of enterovirus 71 inactivated vaccine in Kunming, China.

Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) inactivated vaccines have been widely inoculated among children in Kunming City after it was approved. However, there was a large-scale outbreak of Enteroviruses (EVs) infection in Kunming, 2018. The epidemiological characteristics of HFMD and EVs were analysed during 2008-2018, which are before and three years after EV-A71 vaccine starting to use. The changes in infection spectrum were also investigated, especially for severe HFMD in 2018. The incidence of EV-A71 decreased dramatically after the EV-A71 vaccine starting use. The proportion of non-CV-A16/EV-A71 EVs posi

Immunization with a fusion protein vaccine candidate generated from truncated peptides of human enterovirus 71 protects mice from lethal enterovirus 71 infections.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic vaccines are critical in preventing hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) primarily caused by human enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection. Children aged less than 5 years are especially susceptible to EV71 infections. In addition to the development of vaccines containing the inactivated virus, those containing virus-like particles (VLPs) with repeated antigens also constitute an effective preventive strategy for EV71 infections, with safety and productivity advantages. We previously developed a fusion protein composed with truncated peptides of the EV71 capsid protein, which

Evaluation of a commercially available reverse transcription-PCR enzyme immunoassay (Enterovirus Consensus kit) for the diagnosis of enterovirus central nervous system infections.

A commercial reverse transcription (RT)-PCR amplification method was compared with culture for the diagnosis of enterovirus meningitis. In total, 99 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens were examined with the Enterovirus Consensus kit and shell vial culture. RT-PCR allowed the amplification of enterovirus cDNA and its detection in a microtitre plate by hybridisation. Clinical information and CSF analysis were used to resolve the discrepancy in results. The detection limit of the RT-PCR assay was determined with the Third European Union Concerted Action Enterovirus Proficiency Panel. There were

Peptidyl aldehyde NK-1.8k suppresses enterovirus 71 and enterovirus 68 infection by targeting protease 3C.

Enterovirus (EV) is one of the major causative agents of hand, foot, and mouth disease in the Pacific-Asia region. In particular, EV71 causes severe central nervous system infections, and the fatality rates from EV71 infection are high. Moreover, an outbreak of respiratory illnesses caused by an emerging EV, EV68, recently occurred among over 1,000 young children in the United States and was also associated with neurological infections. Although enterovirus has emerged as a considerable global public health threat, no antiviral drug for clinical use is available. In the present work, we screen

Detection of enterovirus RNA in clinical samples by nested polymerase chain reaction for rapid diagnosis of enterovirus infection.

Employing a nested polymerase chain reaction with primers from the 5' non-translated region of the enterovirus genome, we detected enteroviral RNA from patients with a variety of enterovirus-associated clinical syndromes. This technique was found to be sensitive (detecting enteroviral RNA extracted from 0.1 50% tissue culture infectious dose) and specific; no specific PCR product was detected from RNA extracts of a variety of non-enterovirus isolates. Although the technique is of comparable sensitivity to single round polymerase chain reaction followed by Southern blot hybridization, it was mo

Viral panniculitis in a patient with disseminated opportunistic Enterovirus infection.

Infection-induced panniculitis has been described in association with a broad range of microorganisms. Among those, viral panniculitis represents a minor category, with only a few anecdotal reports in the literature documenting viral infection in the subcutaneous fat. Herein, we report a woman in her 30s with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis on rituximab and prednisone, who presented with a 6-month history of progressive multisystem manifestations, including unintentional weight loss, fever, fatigue, myopathy, pancreatitis, and sensorineural hearing loss. She had indurated plaques on her thig

Balancing immunosuppression and infection: recurrent enterovirus encephalitis in SLE.

A young woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) developed recurrent enterovirus meningoencephalitis while taking prednisolone, azathioprine and rituximab. After reducing the immunosuppression, she developed a central nervous system (CNS) flare of SLE, with enterovirus still present in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). There are no evidence-based specific treatments for enterovirus encephalitis, but she responded well to intravenous immunoglobulin alongside pulsed methylprednisolone and rituximab. This case highlights the difficulties in managing people with co-existing infective and autoimm

Heterogeneous Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein M Facilitates Enterovirus Infection.

UNLABELLED: Picornavirus infection involves a dynamic interplay of host and viral protein interactions that modulates cellular processes to facilitate virus infection and evade host antiviral defenses. Here, using a proteomics-based approach known as TAILS to identify protease-generated neo-N-terminal peptides, we identify a novel target of the poliovirus 3C proteinase, the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteinM(hnRNP M), a nucleocytoplasmic shuttling RNA-binding protein that is primarily known for its role in pre-mRNA splicing. hnRNPMis cleaved in vitro by poliovirus and coxsackievirus B3 (
